It is August, 1999, and planet Earth is being attacked by an alliance of alien races. Alien terrorists land in major cities and massacre civilians. People and animals are abducted from rural areas, and used for food or for medical experiments. Alien agents are also infiltrating the governments of various countries, and establishing bases in their territory. Already, South Africa has signed a deal with the invaders
But XCOM is fighting back. Since January 1999, it has grown in strength, and now has seven bases across the world, with hundreds of personnel. Alien tech has been reversed engineered. XCOM agents recently gained powered armour and heavy plasma guns. For a while, the alien forces seemed to be losing the battle. Few UFOs escaped without being shot down. And on the ground, dozens of aliens were killed for every XCOM soldier lost. Many nations increased their funding for XCOM.
In late July, 1999, a new team of rookies was assembled at Shangri La base in Tibet. Known as NES team (Northern Extraterrestrial Salvage team), They were assigned with easy crash recovery missions, while other XCOM teams tackled the main threats.
NES team thrived, and took on more dangerous missions. Despite the death of trooper emu (who was actually reanimated later on), NES team scored dozens of kills, and secured many crashed UFOs for salvage. Some NES soldiers quickly rose through the ranks.
Then, in August, there was a major retaliation by alien forces. Huge battleship UFOs patrolled the skies, shrugging off all attacks by XCOM craft. Four hi-tech XCOM interceptors were lost within 48 hours. Then the aliens attacked the main XCOM base in Puerto Rico. The base was successfully defended, but many of the old veteran soldiers were killed, and much equipment was lost.
NES team was now the only strike force left. It suddenly became the main assault force of XCOM. These soldiers had been rookies just a few weeks earlier, but now the fate of the world depended on them
OK, I have to be careful to justify this a bit more. So this time, its going to be an official (but very low-maintenance) NES right from the start. For now, Im carrying on with the characters from last time, and Ill see if anyones still interested. But new people are welcome to join.
Basically, I will play the really-old game UFO: Enemy Unknown (or UFO Defence in the USA) on my PC. Players get a soldier named after them in the game (or named whatever they want). I play for a while, then write brief updates and post screenshots to show any noteworthy events that took place, and Ill update the stats for the soldiers.
Rules:
You can pick what sort of soldier you want to control (see below). Then, you can post orders in the thread for how you want them to behave in battles. You can have them change roles, or refuse to help certain other soldiers, etc.
Probably, there will be too many soldiers for them all to go on a mission at once. Ill give mission priority to people who are posting stuff and being active in the thread.
You can even write stories, which will help your soldier in all kinds of subtle ways.
Goal:
Probably, the goal is to gain more mission experience and kills for your soldier, to increase in rank. Those who get high rank could become squad leaders and give orders to the others. Eventually, you could become top dog and take control of how the whole XCOM defence is organised.
But, maybe you have other goals. Maybe you want to corrupt XCOM and work for the aliens. Things could go in all kinds of directions.
Specialisations:
(T)ropers These guys have good reactions and bravery. Their job is to be the front line of the attack, and to take most of the fire. They will see most action, but are obviously more likely to get injured. They have priority for heavy armour.
(H)eavies These guys have the best stamina and strength. They carry heavy weapons around the battlefield. Their job can be pretty varied. They sometimes can be up close with heavy auto cannons, or firing missiles from the other side of the map. Heavy weapons are sometimes not needed in a mission, other times they are essential.
(S)nipers These guys have the best accuracy. Their job is to hang back behind the troopers, get into good firing positions, and take down aliens from a distance. They rely on others to spot the aliens first. They are excellent in open terrain, but less use when assaulting enemy bases and UFOs.
(U)nspecialised (formerly Useless but they deserve a better name now) These guys might not excel in any particular area. Probably they will carry medikits to heal the wounds of other soldiers. Us like LittleBoots and Luckymoose have already saved the lives of several of their comrades. The Us also carry motion scanners, stun weapons, and various other gizmos. They may also carry grenades and spare ammo. But depending on how brave they are, they could also fight on the front lines.
Extra stuff:
Well, people could join as scientists and engineers, and try to influence what is researched+built at base. Or something.
