We all know the personality type of the computer guy or the computer nerd. Many people here count themselves among this group: they enjoy working with computers, and probably have a career with computers in addition to spending most of their free time working with computers. Their personality type just seems to naturally lend itself to computer stuff.

It stands to reason, though, that the computer people's personality type existed before computers. So what did the "computer dork" personality type do for fun/career before computers were invented?

Read comics, play dungeons and dragons, get beat up from the jocks and bowling.

They were abacus dorks.

Or perhaps they did math problems with a pen and pad.

They had hobbies where they would "make things out of kits", or some such.

You're both wrong. Two Words:

Read comics, play dungeons and dragons, masturbate lots, get beat up from the jocks and bowling.

All still done by us, with the possible exception of bowling.

They made things like radios from the bits bins at RadioShack. Remember when you could build thing from bits at RadioShack? I miss those days. Now all you can do is buy a phone or batteries there.

I went to my "local" college and found some nerds who enjoyed making there own circuit boards.

My dad did all of that, except for the getting beat up by jocks part. He was partly a jock himself, being a hardcore wrestler and all that.

My mom told me of when her brother wired their house with junk from the phone company. He built intercoms and everything just to annoy people at his whim.

I remember they wore large LED watches, handled the lighting and pyrotechnics for the drama club, has a Heath kit, learned Klingon as a second language, did homework that wasn't required and collected analog calculators.

Got beaten up by retards? Read books studied stuff, learnt science, got beaten up by semi-retards, used pen and paper or their mind to think of stuff. Got beaten up by slightly more intelligent retards. And then finally they would be beaten up by the averagely intelligent and the above average intelligent in that order. Pretty similar to today without the computers in other words.

And before all that there was the good old abacus.

They didn't exist. This question is like asking "what did chickens do before the egg was invented?". The conditions required to generate a 'computer person' didn't exist yet.

For alternate theories, see other posts in this thread.

They were engineers.
