The sun rose on the year 650BC. Nobody even knew what that meant yet, or how to use it, but they were sure that when they'd discovered something called 'calendar', they'd be able to make some use of it.
Emperor Tboy looked before the band of builders, warriors, craftsmen, farmers and all the other members of the tribes gathered before him. It would take a great leader to turn this ragtag bunch of assorted tribesmen into a mighty Japanese empire.
He cleared his throat and began to speak. 'Friends, warriors, countrymen, lend me your ears. We have a great land bestowed upon us by the gods. We must make something of it. You', he indicated a group of settlers, 'shall build the city of Kyoto upon this spot. You', he indicated a group of archers 'shall guard the city with your lives. And you', now he indicated another group of settlers and archers 'shall do the same over to the East. The groups hurried off.
Tboy turned himself to the group of swordsmen that still stood there. 'Men', he said, 'though our nation shall do many great things, there are three we must hold high above all else. Firstly, no foreign influence must ever reach the beloved Japanese homeland. Secondly, we must be top in score in 1500AD -whatever that's supposed to mean.' The soldiers shuffled among each other uncomfortably. 'Thirdly, we must never lose a city to foreigners. Now, do you remember how we shall achieve this?' A young soldier raised his hand. 'Yes, Jim?'
'All troops will be trained in-' he furrowed his head trying to remember the name of the unfamiliar concept'-ci-ty de-fence?'
'Excellent work Jim. Now split up into two groups and go raise support from the local tribal villages, then return directly to here.'
As the swordsmen hurried away to their tasks, the wisemen and craftsmen approached him. 'What will you have us do, Emperor?' said Kim, the most intelligent man in all Japan.
'I have heard of a land called China across the sea. While in some respects it is backward, it is also powerful and could become a threat. I therefore suggest we develop the ways of sailing, so that we might cross over and conquer the devils before they do the same to us!' A cheer went up from the assembled crowd, and the wisemen hurried off to develop this 'sailing'.
The Emperor then focused his attention to the craftsmen. 'Once the secrets of sailing have been discovered, you will need to build a ship known as a 'galley' for our purposes. Send the workers to the nearby forests to gather the wood for this when the time comes. In the mean time, work on a work boat.'
The sailors then strolled up. 'Half of you go forth and fish from the sea where there are bountiful fish, and the other half go and investigate China before fishing crabs on the other side of Japan'
Finally, a civil servant approached him
'Implement Monarchy and slavery to our nation.'
'Slavery? Won't that be unpopular?'
'I don't care about popular! I just want the rest of the day off!' Muttering about his lot in life, he walked away.
