I'm currently working on making a new Civ: The Aborigini... and I plan on making new graphics for the leaderhead, special unit and special building. But since I'm new to customizing Civ IV, I'm not quite familiar with the methods yet. So I have a couple questions for those veterans of the field that frequent these boards.

Firstly, is it possible to import .nif files (or some converted form of them) into 3dsmax (8)? If so, how do I do so?

I have the Unmass program, but I found the fpk files impossible to navigate. Is there some sort of guide or trick I'm missing that would help me find the files I am looking for?

Is there a list of animation names for units and leaderheads that I can use to make animations for my new meshes?

Those are really all the questions I can think of right now. I have looked through the tutorials and utilities forums a couple times and have found many things that have been helpful. I just havent been able to answer these questions.

P.S. Here is a render of the beginning of the leader head I'm making and a link to the wikipedia article where I discovered him. Thanks.

That's a great start Firehazurd. If you've checked the Tutorial area already I'm sure I can't answer your questions.

I can tell you that if you go to the main C&C page and look at Kael's stickied thread about 3dmax plugins that should help you get .nifs into max. I know that I can get them into max7, but can't recall what I d/l'd to be able to do so. Thread here. No idea if there is a plugin for 8 yet.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yeah I have those, as far as I know they only allow you to export new nif files. I'm going to read through the entire thread to make sure I didn't miss something. If you know you can import .nif files then there is hope :D I'll keep looking and waiting... I'm sure the answer is out there somewhere.

Oh yeah, you can import .nifs. I've imported a lot of Firaxis .nifs and borrowed features from them. At least in max7.

Ok, so neither the documentation nor the thread had instructions to help me inport Civ models to 3dsmax... The OGLE program might be somewhat useful, but I imagine it only captures the mesh and not any of the bones or inner workings. Still it should help with scaling.

Does anyone know anything about the Animation designations for Leader Heads or navigating the .fpk's ?

Update on the Leader Head!

Low poly version (I may not actually use Mesh Smooth if the texture work is good enough...)
and yes, he has no ears... yet :)

You could become very valuable if this works. :)

Remember who your friends are, especially when they come for favors. :D

Now he has scruff, about to start his chest.

I would love to make lots of custom content, but I still need to know how to import stuff. I learn best by emulation and if I can't look at the bone structure and animation names then I don't know how I'm going to get this to work. I'm pretty sure that someone has made a leader head... that guy from brazil right? or did he make statics. Anyway, once I figure that out and get it done once it shouldn't be a problem to do it again.

CivArmy - he made statics.

But C.Roland has made 2 animated leaderheads: Charlemagne and Trajan.

BTW - if you like, you can take a look at CIV Gold 3.0. I made an Aborigine civ for version 2.0 with Yagan and G. Yunupingu as leaders, the Woomera Wielder as the UU, and the Bora Ring as the UB.

I'll check it out.. I thought of doing a boomerang/woomera wielder or a spearman, but I think I'm going to make a Scout replacement... I read an article about the aborigini using dingos and hunting companions and thought it would be nice to make a scout with +1 visibilty and maybe 2 strength... a nice defense against barbarians.

What were the special building specs? I have an idea for one but I'm not set on it.
