More specifically, i have recieved an email for a job offer to be an IT intern for the USDA's agriculturual marketing service.

But i need .net experience. When i typed .net in wikipedia it just said it was a domain name.

What does she mean by .net experience?

Heres the email.

Dear Jonathan:

I work for the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, and we are looking for an IT intern this summer for Washington DC . I found your information from the Workforce Recruitment Program, and wanted to get in touch with you about your availability. I was really impressed with your interview notes.

W are specifically looking for someone with .NET experience. While I may be the recruitment coordinator, I definitely don’t have technical IT knowledge! However this is the one thing our IT department requested. Is this something you have experience with? I apologize for being vague, but if you need additional info, I can put you in touch with the hiring official.

Also, please feel free to call me at <snip> to discuss. I would enjoy the chance to discuss this with you.
Thanks,

Jennifer

It's going to be a long summer if you accept that assignment. Obviously .Net is an important enough criteria to be a dealbreaker. If you don't even know what it is at this point, you will be in over your head. Plus, you will be lying to the government if you claim you have experience when you don't.

Home Depot isn't that bad.

Blag blag and blag some more! What have you got to lose!

pretend you know it. Get a vague grip of it an call up. Im sure you can learn fast on the job!

And she even admitted in her mail to you that she doesn't know jack sh1t about IT. Should be easy... ;)

I'm so waiting for the "Today I got fired for lying about my experience" thread :)

Lieing to the federal government to atain employment is a federal crime that can result in jail time.

They aren't asking if you can type but if your familure with MS intergration protocalls so they can sync up the USDA with other agentcies. Not something you can learn on the job.

Your a jerk.

I just emailed her and said i didnt have any experience and was wondering if they had another job offer.

Way to go closing every open door..

Is it still a federal crime if you aren't on a payroll?

At any rate, telling the truth is the smart thing to do. You aren't going to get good enough at .NET on the job, and the last thing you want is the federal government pissed at you.

If they're looking for interns, I'm sure other government branches are. They run on college student labor, and when they all go home, they have a lot of openings.

magna est veritas, et prevalabit.

Very much so. Its a crime to lie on any job application for the gov. for any reason. When you sign the bottem line it says you "are telling the truth under penalty of law". You can be charged with lieing under oath and fraud.

Myeh, for something like this you'd likely just get debarred from Federal employment, at the most. They've got better things to do, than ruin your life for something like this. With new hires, it's easy come, easy go.

I've seen first hand, if someone new shows up and just can't do the job, is incompetent, etc.... they just fire them and that's that.

Still, not something I would do/risk, though. Federal employment is a nice gravy train. Take me for example - I do virtually nothing, and get paid handsomely. And I don't even have an education yet. Once I get that knocked out, it'll be silly... the work : pay ratio.

Job security. Benefits & pension you don't have to worry about. Good pay. Joke work. Yeah - wouldn't risk the lifetime future possibilities over some stupid ".net" summer job crap at AG(riculture).

slightly off-topic: Wikipedia is case sensitive. typing in [wiki].NET[/wiki] would have gotten you to the information you were looking for...
