Flower Class Corvette

After looking around some, I couldn't find a corvette style ship, and I personally wanted one (That is why I make most of my stuff anyways).

So I found some blueprints and made myself (And you if you want it) and anti-submarine, WWII Flower Class that kept the sea lanes open so the UK wouldn't starve and get more weapons and stuff. 255 of this class were built.

It was quite cheap to produce, could turn as fast as a sub, and packed as much anti-sub stuff as a destroyer. But quite weak against surface vessels I'd assume.

I am planning on using maybe 14 pwr, +%150 vs subs..
I haven't a pic from the game, (but I did try it), but here is a render..

Uses the Destroyers animations..

On request from C. Roland I lightened the ship up some. It is corvette-lighter.zip.

I haven't tested it in game as Civ 4 is not on this PC, but it should be lighter..
Tell me if you test it please. :)

I only wish Subs were actually useful for something... subs are not really anti-warship weapons. Certainly they can sink warships, but they're definitely much more effective against commerce. Unfortunately there's no way in game currently to simulate sea trade and stopping it.

It looks like a good unit though ;)
 
Good to see the collection of modern ships is getting larger.

I am thinking of giving them a bonus vs Battleships, and a lot better chance at running away from them if I can manage it.. Same with carriers. As neither had onboard equipment to track them once they dived.

Maybe make the subs a little cheaper to..

Though, yah, that is right, it is almost useless, but again, I made it for the fun of it. :)

Edit: Just had a though about that.. Maybe if you sit a sub outside a city it would take away 1 trade route per sub that is accessible only by water (And you put airports much later, or make them m a little more expensive).

Now you've got me thinking... maybe something that should be added is +X% withdrawal chance vs. Unit Class. It wouldn't increase its chance of winning a battle but just increase its ability to attack and live to fight another day.

As that was the destroyers/corvettes jobs, and they had the right equipment to fight it effectively. So then maybe I should just give the destroyers/corvettes bigger bonus vs subs, but then there would be no chance at all as they would have to be over 40 pwr, and that would be unrealistic..

Yeah, I agree totally with that. Atm, I have the subs get a first strike and destroyers just ignore first strikes (What else get them at the moment anyways?)

And a totally raw submarine crew that is going our to battle should at least know how to submerge the thing, and even maybe fire the weapons.

I think also that corvettes should be a little more powerful than destroyers vs subs, as they could follow the subs as they twisted and turned to try to escape the sonar or whatever it was back then. And that they are dirt cheap.. But then they should only be able to have a %75 chance at beating ironclads, as they had a machine gun, and one smallish gun, nothing like a battleship, or even a destroyer.

Nice one, good model :goodjob: ! You should only redo the skin of the white turret, it's too plain.

That is a good idea.. I could not find a lot of pictures that had a view were I could see what it looked like.. Does anyone have any ideas what a turret would be like? Would it have handles, or hatches (and where would that be) etc..

Yeah, and Battleships beat Destroyers and don't even notice corvettes when they run over them..

So basically corvettes provide a cheap alternative to sub hunting, but you would want to take along a destroyer or battleship to defend from surface ships.

The problem lies in getting the AI to build subs. When testing the corvette I place on of all the ships I added in my game to the thing to show my little brothers. Then for the fun of it, I added maybe 15 subs to the enemy. Boy were they good! They took down almost all my ships except those that out teched them, and the destroyers. As a consequence I added +2 power to the corvette. But they even teamed up on me to sink me! It was quite amazing. But they problem is in getting them to build subs.. Which maybe they will as I have boosted them up as we have been discussing some, and maybe making them a tad cheaper would work to..

I'd love to! I was thinking of doing one anyways..

Give me a few days though. ;) I cannot guarantee that the sidewheels will be animated though, as there is no ship In civ 4 that uses that kind of animation..

Regarding the submarine yes,i expected also to be a little stronger,however i have change it its strength,i have gave it 3 first srtikes chances,and withdrwal 60%.I have added extra bonus attack against it for the destroyer.

the propellers of the ships aren't animated, too;)

I have a problem with civ4 naval warfare: after a unit has won a battle it is always so badly damaged that it get easily sunk the next turn. I thought about a "repair"-promotion or so. What do you think?

I have subs with something like 100 vs battleships in both attacking and defending.
Same with cruiser (Something I have added).

A repir promotion would be cool. Something Dom Pedro mentioned about promotions got me thinking. A 'Depth harge' Promotion, req combat 1 and give %100 vs subs. And Corvettes/destroyers start with it. That way you can arm any of your ships with it, but you wouldnt get an OP corvette or something..

Sure, I will give it a shot! I am almost done skinning the paddlewheeler, took a break yesterday to add a tonne of new ships into Civ 4.:mischief:
Instead of just one battleship, I have 5 ranging from the turreted one I made up to a modern one.. And then cruisers equivalent to that, a galleas, a war galleon, a SotL, a Nuke sub, and a few other ships I hav dl'ed here..


But if you could find blueprints, that would be great, though not vital..
It may take a few days as a family frien is coming up till saturday, but I have nightime to do stuff. ;)

Cool looking sub btw. :)
