I know I'm not the most literate person in the world when it comes to the Bible, but I know it fairly well. This is very sad....

The United States is the most religious nation in the developed world, if religiosity is measured by belief in all things supernatural -- from God and the Virgin Birth to the humbler workings of angels and demons. Americans are also the most religiously ignorant people in the Western world. Fewer than half of us can identify Genesis as the first book of the Bible, and only one third know that Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount.

I mean, come on, at least know the basics of your faith, mm'kay?

You don't have to have read the Bible to know common facts like that. At least we ain't shunning religion like some sickly concept that ought to be condemned to a "mythical" hell... Yet. :(

I have been one to advocate that people who are religious and want to be truely religious should study their own faith before trying to truly act on it. Such a thing can easily prevent many of the stupidities that religion is accused of.

It's the same type of reason why I advocate education of any type, over anything else - because an increased knowledgepool will only help oneself and society.

I mean, there's a reason why people have automatic negative connotations of Christianity with a brand of American Protestantism!

It's also the reason why Sola Scriptura sucks, because it assumes that everyone has the ability to understand the complexities of religion, when clearly they do not because people are stupid. :p

Numbers...*shudder*

"Jerushabbel begat Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz"

Best name ever, by the way. Whenever my father heard that someone was having a baby he always suggested that name. Pure genius.

But really, though, most of the Bible is an incredible story. Even non-religious people should read it, if only because it is one of the most comprehensive and vast stories of adventure and redemption in the history of the world.

There's an actor with that name...

I'm not a Jesus person by any stretch of the imagination, and even I've read the darn thing.

Actually, I plan to do a study on it and its various translations when I finally get to the level of schooling that'll allow/require me to do that substantial of a study. Even as a work of purely fictional literature it's a fascinating piece of work.

You're right, Warpus, it's not critical. But reading the Bible and reflecting upon it can help you grow in your faith.

Wouldn't this be qualify as a relgious sect rather than just ignorance? Americans have the freedom to believe in what they want in the Bible. The government doesn't ram it in our heads.

As an altar boy for almost 10 years I've read the bible I've even read it up side down. It sucks big time. If it were rewriten in a more modern wording I'd probaly dig it for the scifi stories its made up of.
