I figured I'd just release this seperately because it just doesn't fit anywhere yet. Purely fictional UU, no civ colors.... A Su-30 in VF-84 Jolly Roger's colors. American weapons, engines and avionics. The skin may be Russian but the guts and fangs are all American. This idea was actualy argued for because of the 'superiority' of the Flanker over western fighters. Yeah, argued for by the same poeple that wanted the US Army to drop the M-16 in favor of the AK-47. Politically impossible.

Great unit, Wyrm. Very accurate on the paint job (even though it's a Russian plane). Also, I like the US weaponry on the plane. I second a Tomcat version.

The Flanker, in many ways, matches and exceeds US aircraft. However, the real variable is the pilot, and few nations train their pilots to the level of US aviators. I'll take a well trained pilot that flys 200-300 hours per year in a 1960's or 70's tech level plane over a guy who is lucky to get 100 hours a year flying something "better".

VF-84 was decommed a while back, and VF-103 took over the name and "jolly roger." Now, they are flying Super Hornets, so it has changed again to VFA-103.

The Jolly Rogers "skull and crossbones" became a famous icon during WWII, when they were VF-17. Ensign Jack Ernie was shot down and killed over Okinawa. As his plane was going down, he said over the radio ""remember me with The Jolly Rogers" or something to that effect. Apparently, later on his family gave his bones (Skull and Femurs) to the squadron, and they are still kept in a portable wooden display case.

My squadron used to be next to these guys in a hangar at Oceana when Tomcats were still there, which was not so long ago. Everyone was always trying to steal the bones, to be ransomed back for beer and other libations. The junior officer in the squadron was assigned as guardian, and was expected to bring the bones to social functions. If he ever lost them, you can imagine the crap he got from the rest of the squadron. It is not uncommon to see him holding the bones in their case, handcuffed to his wrist, at the O'Club. Anyways, just my little story.

Well that turned out nice although it is an interesting what if. Navy Dawg great story didnt realize the Jolly Rogers kept a set of bones.

Wow great unit! I would also like to see a tomcat and super hornet. Thats quit the interesting background.

Wow... This is one of the best planes I've seen on CFC for a while.

:goodjob:

Well done!

Wyrm's new good work...:goodjob:

I could definately find a place for this jet in my Ace Combat mod.
Excellent work here. AMRAAMs, Phoenixes... I wouldn't want to mess with that.

But when it comes to Tomcats, my alltime favorite F-14 squadron was the Sundowners (VF-111) though... I just love the shark mouth with the rising sun ensign on the tail. Even in low vis grey they looked nice.
