After some time away from the game, I'm wanting get back into it. Of course, I can only find disc 2. So assuming I don't locate the disc 1 boot cd...

Since I don't have Warlords, can I buy Warlords and use that to boot the game? That would be ideal because it's cheaper and it's content I don't have yet.

or

Do I have to buy Civ4 again?

Any help? One way or the other, I'm going to play Civ4 today :)

southpawphil, I don't know in what country you are, but in some countries ( like Canada and some of the European Union ) it is legal to use a no_cd executable if you had purchased the real thing ( not a pirated one !! ). It it is your case, google it. If not, pretend that you didn't ear me

you would be able to play warlords with the warlords cd. but the warlords cd doesn't contain vanilla civ4.

I have Civ4 installed on my computer. If I buy Warlords and install it, I will have Civ4 (original, patched even) and warlords. Could I then use the Warlords disc to boot the game or to boot the game do you still need the CIV4 cd?

edit: I was assuming warlords wasn't a stand alone game, just added a few things to the core civ4 game

If you already have Civ4 installed, you can buy Warlords, install it and play the Warlords game.
You will not be able to play Vanilla, 'cause it will still need the vanilla cd.

So I go and buy a new version of Civ4 at the store. I uninstalled the previous version of CIV4 I had and reinstallled with the new version.

Now I get an error coming from df394b.tmp that keeps the game from launching. Searching I see other's have had this problem.

Any ideas from the regulars?

Not a happy camper at this point.

Quick tip Make sure youve deleted all remnants of the old download before you reinstall. Check 'my' files and even the registry and delete all old stuff. Hope it gets going soon.

This is why you back up every CD that you buy. This is perfectly legal both in U.S. Copyright law and in the EULA of Civilization IV.

cleaned out my registry references to Civ/Firaxis, deleted remnants, and reinstalled and I'm still getting the error.

:(

Don't really care about having to buy a new version of the game, but I do care that the new version doesn't work :(

Tell us exactly what the error message says, word for word.

I haven't found a fix for this, but it sounds like it may be related to SafeDisc a copy protection thing Civ appears to be using. If that's true it's also doing a great job from keeping someone who's bought their game twice. Yay.

This is the error that comes up when I try to launch the game.

Error Signature: AppName: civilization4.exe AppVer: 1.6.1.1841 ModName: ~df394b.tmp

It's SafeDisc. If I remove a Civ4 registry entry under a SafeDisc related entry, reboot, I can get into the game. As far as I went was start a 1st player game and was able to do that.

After I launch the game, it puts that entry I removed back in. That means the next time I reboot I would have to repeat the above to at least be able to get the game.

SafeDisc is keeping me from playing a game that I paid for twice!! I think I'm going to start a new post in the Tech Support forum and I'll link to this one.

Just buy warlords anyway its worth it, or wait till july and buy beyond the sword, either way youll be getting more content and a more enjoyable experience anyway.
