Ok mates,

You all know that I am new to NESing but this shouldn't denote my creative ability. I grew up in the world of game making, and I don't know if what I am about to show you is exactly NESing or not. But it's something fresh, and something I haven't seen touched here in the forum. Like Daftpanzer, "my brain handles pictures better then words." So I welcome you to a Beta version of my coming NES. I call it Sanotria.

Here is a Beta, and for it I need a max of 3 other players, simply because the gameboard is so small for testing. What I wish to accomplish is to get a good grasp on game concept for both the readers, the players, and me especially! I have a general overall idea of where I want this thing to go, but I really have got to see it into play before I make it more complex.

Therefore, this Beta will include:
Only 2 Terrain Types - Forest, and Grassland
Only 2 Unit types (Maybe more added later) - Archers, and Spearmen
Only 3 Battle Maps - Forest, Grassland, and Town
Limited Techs
Limited Players
No NPCs
No Markets

Now, let's get started shall we?

Rules Rules Rules... well since this is Beta we shall forge the rules as we go along. But basically the concept is similar to Civ;
1. Establish a Capitol.
2. Gain Resources
3. Build Units
4. Make Armys
5. Settle new towns.
6. Annihilate the other players.
7. Have fun.
-----------------------------------
To Start:
I need 3 players, I am the fourth to show you how to move, and to set the example.
Here is the Map we will be playing on:
Spoiler :
BetaMap.jpg

Players Decide:
1. Pick a coordinate on the map, this will be the location of your first city.
2. Name the city you want established, example: Firetown
3. Choose the color you wish to be, example: Yellow
4. Name your People & Yourself, Format;
Formal - Germany,France,Israel
Adjective - German,French,Jewish
People - Germans,French,Jews
Title - Lord,Mr.,Sir
Name - Mike,Dave,Bobby

After all 3 players select the above, I will then choose my starting location and settings. The first 3 players to sign up will be added, the rest of you boys and girls can join in the non-Beta version.
Remaing rules will be revealed after starting locations have been established.

Game Begins:

The Players have been decided:
Lightfang
Erik Mesoy
Lord_Iggy
Sanotra

The townships and kingdoms have been established:
- King Jack of the English established the town of "Here" at B8, from this position King Jack would rule over the kingdom of Anywhere with his royal colors of Red.
- King Lorian of the Belvans established the town of "Ishara" at B2, from this position he would rule over the kingdom of Belva, and it's peachy color of Beige.
- Overlord Iggy of the Penguins established the town of "Penguinska" at G6, from this place he would rule over the kingdom of Penguinska, with its royal colors of Purple.
- Lord Sanotra of the Celts established the town of "Entremont" at H1, from here he would rule over the Kingdom of Celtonia, with its bright and dark Green colors.

It is the first year of contact, may the conquests begin, good luck!

Rules on next post.

Rules and Concepts:

Turns:
Spoiler :
The Turns are separated into seasons. 4 seasons in a year, and however many years it takes until 1 player prevails. There is no weather, climate, or any other seasonal effect on the game.

Town working:
Spoiler :
A town can only do 2 things per turn. 1 is to create a form of weaponry. The other is to gather available resources. A player can either do both per turn, or only 1. Gathering resources can go on nonstop, depending on the amount of resources available. When a player wishes to create a unit (Not weaponry), such as an army, then the Unit replaces the weapon being built in the production box.

Resource Gathering:
Spoiler :
Wood is the only available resource in this Beta version. Wood is required to construct certain types of weapons. In this Beta it will be used to construct "Bows and arrows", and "Spears". To gather wood from a forest, a forest must be within a towns territorial claims (displayed by the color lines surrounding a town). When giving orders the player must specify that he/she wants to gather resources from the available terrain. Each turn he/she must specify whether or not they want their selected town to gather resources from a different square, or continue where they have preselected, if they do not specify then the mod will assume they wish to continue gathering in the preselected location.

Forestry:
Spoiler :
A forest lasts for 20 seasons(5 years) under continuous chopping. The first 10 seasons the forest yields 100 wood per turn when chopped. After 10 seasons wood becomes more scarce, and the forest Terrain is replaced with a chopped forest terrain. Wood chopping in the last 10 seasons of the forest yield 50 wood per turn. Overall a single forest square holds 1500 wood, and lasts 20 turns. Forests can only be chopped by one player, and one town.

Technology:
Spoiler :
Before a player can start constructing weapons, or a particular tech based unit, they must first research the tech. Technology costs nothing to research, it only takes time. A certain numbers of seasons must pass before a player completely researches a particular tech. Once complete the player can reap the benefits of the tech, such as; Spears, and Spearmen, for researching "Pole Making".

Players, use this screen to choose your Technology.
TechScreen2.jpg

Weapon Construction:
Spoiler :
After a particular weapons is discovered through tech, a player can then construct these weapons in selected townships they have control over. Depending on the weapon choice, differing amounts of resources will be consumed to construct them. Constructed weapons enter the Kingdoms weapons storage, which is not restricted to a particular town. Meaning that spears constructed in 3 different towns of the same player, each enter into the same storage bin.

Army Making:
Spoiler :
Like other units, an Army depends on what available items (weapons) you have in your kingdom. There is to be a minimum of 100 troops in a created army, and a maximum of 2000. To create an army a player must have enough weapons to do so. A player specifys what town he/she wants the army created in. They specify the size of the army (ex: 250 troops), and how many of each weapon choice are to be combined into the army (ex: 100spears,150archers). Armys are split into three different Icon types;
Small: 100-500 soldiers
Armyt1.jpg

Medium: 501-1000 soldiers
Armyt2.jpg

Large: 1001-2000 soldiers
Armyt3.jpg

Newly created armies must wait until 1 season has passed after their creation to move.

Unit Movement:
Spoiler :
On the world map units can only move so far per season. Their movement is restricted to the square grid of the game board. A player giving the orders for a unit to move will specify where they want their unit to move to, such as "Move my E6 army to F3". The unit will then advance towards the selected spot over the following seasons until it reaches it's destination. A Unit can only move vertically and horizontally along the Square Grid of the Game Board.

Army Movement:
Spoiler :
Small = 3 squares per season
Medium = 2 squares per season
Large = 1 squares per season

Battle:
Spoiler :
When 2 players choose the same spot on the grid to send an army when giving orders, then a battle breaks out. Battle Victory is determined by Army Size, who's defending, what kind of terrain is the defender located on. If both players were the aggressor then defender benefits are taken away. A certain number of die are rolled. A player wants to have a greater number of dice rolled in their stead. The number totaled from dice rolling effects the outcome of the battle, and whether or not the loser can successfully retreat or not.

Attacking a town:
Spoiler :
When a player attacks an undefended town (Meaning no army located on the town square), then a Battle still commences. The attacker attacks the people who live in the town, in most cases the townspeople are slaughtered despite the defense benefits given. It would be the best idea to keep an army defending each of your towns. When a player successfully attacks a town, the town falls under the control of the conquerer.

Victory:
Spoiler :
Victory is given to the "last man standing". When all opposing player controlled townships are captured, then victory is given to the remaining player.

Diplomacy:
Spoiler :
Alliances are not allowed in this Beta version.

User Interface:
Spoiler :
Every season a player is sent a screen to show them their progress. The format looks like this:
UserInterfacehelp.jpg

Giving Orders:
Spoiler :
Orders should have a certain format, or at least specify each thing necessary for advancement.
Suggested Format (Not all things will necessarily need to be done each turn):
- Produce Weaponry (Choose type of weapon, and which town to be built at)
- Produce Unit (Look at "Army Making" section of rules)
- Study Tech, if you wish to continue the tech your own, just say "Continue tech"
- Move Unit (Look at Unit moving section of rules)
- Gather Resources (Choose which square for each town you wish to gather, if you wish to continue in same square, then say so, or it will be assumed)

Combining Armies:
Spoiler :
Armies are the only unit that can combine. When a player moves 2 armies to the same spot on the map, the two automatically combine and become 1. The player must specify how he/she wants to divide the army if that is their will. A newly divided army must be sent to two separate map spaces.

Combining Units:
Spoiler :
When 2 friendly units meet at the same location on the map, bot remain separate but occupy the same square (except for armies). When an army meets an enemy non combat unit on the map, the enemy unit is destroyed.

Aggressive/Defensive Stances & Zone of Control:
Spoiler :
Players can choose to put their armies into either an aggressive, or defensive stance. Aggressive armies are much more likely to get into a battle then defensive armies. When two enemy armies attempt to march past each other, and one or both of them are aggressive, then a battle breaks out. Here is an example of such a thing.
Aggresivedefensive.jpg

Zone of Control is a feature belonging to a stationary army. When an army has not been given an order to move, then the army does not move and becomes stationary. They hold power over the 4 spaces which are directly above, below, and at their sides.
If the stationary army is aggressive, then any enemy enemy which passes through their zone of control is attacked.
If the stationary army is defensive, they will not attack anything that passes through their zone of control.
When an aggressive army chooses to move its troops into the zone of control of an enemy army, then the stationary army must fight whether they are Aggressive or not. But if the Aggressive army only walks through the zone of control, then a battle does not break out.
zoc.jpg

Avoiding Zone of Control:
Spoiler :
If a player does not want to have conflict with an aggressive army exercising Zone of Control, they must specify in their orders. In order to avoid conflict their armies must take the time to march around the enemy armies zone of control. They must specify which route to take.

Settling new towns:
Spoiler :
After a player completes research on "Settlement" they may produce settlers. When a player chooses to produce a settler, production begins in the production box. Weapons cannot be constructed while a settler is being produced. Unlike Armies Settlers take time in order to be made. A army cannot be created while a settler is being produced. When the settler is made, the player can choose a spot on the map in which he wants the settler to move. If he wants the settler to make a new town, he/she must say something like "move settler to K4 and create a new town, name it Furry." The Settler will move there and settle the town. A settler disappears when a new town is created. A settler cannot make a new town within a players territory, their own, or enemy. But a new towns territory must connect with existing friendly territory.

Settler Stats:
Spoiler :
Settler.jpg

Movement: 4
Production: 2 Seasons
A settler never attacks any enemy unit, but can defend itself. A settler has no zone of control, but it does have some defensive bonuses. While not enough to ward of larger enemy armies, defensive settler bonuses can force a aggressive attacking army to retreat in battle. If the attacking army succeeds in destroying the settler, then the victorious player receives a small percentage of spoils from the beaten settler, and the settler disappears.

I would play, but I'm in the middle of an update and am going away on Friday.

I'll try this.

(Fifty points, a cookie, and a pint of brain bleach to whoever searches out the dark pit of the internet from where I stole "Ishara". One of my 'friends' sent it to me, and the link has been floating around the internet recently. It's like a shock site, only with good taste, so I couldn't pass up putting it here too. :mischief: )

You'd laugh but the word is from a Russian movie based on Bulgakov: "Master i Margarita". You can often hear the chorus sing in the background: "Ishara!"

Do I get a cookie? Das back me up!

Ok guys, we need 1 more person, I know iggy wants to join, I just hope he joins before someone else does ;)

Erik Mesoy:
Please pick a different color, as lightfang chose Light Red. You chose red afterwards, the 2 colors would be too hard to distinguish.

Since Iggy said he'd join, it would be rather rude to take that spot from him. So I won't, but I'll lurk with interest and wait for the non-beta. :)

Hehehe. You can have a cookie for being wonderfully obscure, but I'm thinking of something else. As Google shows, there are lots of things named [google]Ishara[/google]. There's a reason I offered brain bleach along with the cookie, and at least two people on this forum know what I'm referencing.

@Nik- Thanks!

Penguinskan Orders

Gather Resources from the Forest at G5.

Study Ranged Weaponry.

Is there anything else I can do this turn? I assume I can't build weapons until I have the technology.

Sorry Guys, I know there is little to order about at the time being. Beta is just chugging through the concept. Things become more complex later on. I dont expect to be too long between updates in these early stages of the game as you guys have little to ponder over ;) But I need to get all orders in asap to keep other players from waiting too long. I am still waiting on Erik to give me his orders.

Iggy, in the future you may not want to display all orders in the thread itself, such as posting where your army is going to be, that would be inviting danger.

I know, but the only real threat to my security ATM is showing which tech I'm researching, and I don't really care what people know about it right now.

True, with only 2 possible techs at the moment it's not really a problem. If Beta succeeds and I like the concept, then I will be adding much more technology. I just wish Erik would get on! Is he very active?

Considering he lives in Norway ;)

Iggy is in england, it cant be too bad huh?It would be nice to know what time each of my players get on, that way I dont run back to the computer every five minutes to check for orders ;)
