If you had a Million Dollars, and spent it solely on yourself, what would you do with it?

I would buy a Big chunk of land bordering designated national wilderness. Preferably the bordering private lands would be a Native American reservation. This land would have a year round river on it and it would be in a local such as I could experience all four seasons of the year. I would buy as much land as would buy me the illusion of living in the wilderness. Land would be my sole luxury (well almost). The tools to work that land to preserve my independence would then be my next priority. Then a trust fund to pay my land taxes till my death. Then a trust fund to help cover the medical expenses of my old age. Then I would establish my various business endeavors which would provide for me the things I cannot provide for myself. Much of the tools I would need to develope my homestead would in turn allow me to gain a living off the surrounding land and its people (Portable Sawmill, DryKiln, Backhoe, 2 Ton 1950's truck etc.) But to be well rounded and be able to trust in making ends meet I would invest further in my art and all that which would allow me to market it. I would invest in remote Radio and Internet hardware but would forgo television without a second thought.

Once those needs were covered if I had any left over I would then buy a couple bars of Gold. Just cuz I always wanted a couple bars of gold. Seems better than a bank deposit sometimes. After that... I don't rightly know. Beyond the normal things one needs for a humble modern live, I suppose it would be spent on a better bed. A hot tub and a Finnish steam bath (sauna). Perhaps a couple nice rugs to cover the hardwood floor in my reading room. I would likely invest in some good reading material though it would be on the cheap like most of my acquisitions. I would build most of my own furniture but I would want a couple nice leather chairs and sofa. Though that would take second fiddle to all else. After that.... I suppose I'd bank it if there was anything left.

Invest in a broad range of mutual funds and live off the interest. Average returns for stocks are around 10%, so I could easily live off the 100K interest without touching the principle.

10% Tithing
20% Education
30% Financial Freedom Account

With the remaining 40% I'd start a record company or book publisher, that way not only could I help reform those industries, I could get my own stuff published for free, despite the inevitable net losses :)

1.Build a sick paintball/airsoft course, and buy lots of guns for said activities as well.

2.After I learn how to work in one, I'd build a recording studio.

3.Build a tennis court.

4.Invest the rest.

Invest, live off the dividends until I got through school. Then continue working until the age of 40 when I will be able to retire with ease.

A ranch in Wyoming? A lodge in New Hampshire? A penthouse in New York? That's a tough decision/

I suppose ten years ago Ida been willing to let it sit and make me the money for my future. But now at 37 if I had it now I would invest it all to begin my final life now while I still have the body which can make my dream real. In another 10 years I will naturally begin to decline and not long after the work that must be done will have to be done by others. And that is not part of my dream. From what I have seen of others work, it is not worth me laboring to pay their wages. It seems a point of diminishing returns to me. Besides I just want to do it myself.

$1M isn't that big of a number anymore.

10% Tithing
Tithing doesnt count lol. I did say that it was money spent solely on yourself. I was Mormon for a time and Tithing is something which is instilled deep within me prior to my exploration of religion. So say you have a few million and budget one million for your own needs after family and community. What then would you do with it after all other considerations were taken care of?

You'd need a lot more than that if you wanted to stay within Manhattan.

Index funds seem like an option, but no matter what, I'll invest it. Take some out to pay student debts first, though.

Very true. When I started this fantasy in the 1980s One Million dollars went much further than it does today. Which is part of my reluctance into investing for my future now. I would rather set myself up to live independent of my society, than to trust that my monies invested today will provide for my security at the twilight of my life. Inflation and cost of living increases make me think that monies invested today may be worthless tommarrow. I'd rather take my life in my own hands than to trust it in the hands of others.

It depends on how you use it. What Bill Gates would with 1 mil is going to go a lot further than in the hands of a lotto winner.

It's still a nice sum of money. Sure it doesn't go as far as it used to, but used right you could make it last.

Not with just 1 million. After I work for another 20 years. I am a compulsive saver.

This is another aspect of what to do with the money...

I worked as a woodcutter from time to time. There was one time where I worked with my Uncle for a few summers. I could make up to a couple hundred dollars a day cutting firewood. Hard work but good pay for my realm. When we took the big truck and trailer up and stayed on site for a couple days then we made even more. Sun up to sun down made for 14 hour days but it was cost effective big time.

Then one summer the fires came. At the same time restrictions came that disallowed us private woodcutters from our business. The big guys were fine. We were denied the woodcutting permits. But even the big guys were limited due to the extreme fire season. I foresaw a major need for heating oil. This local was McCall Idaho in a place with long winters of deep snow. I foresaw and knew that I could invest in heating oil and make a bundle of money. But then I knew my profits would come at the cost of my community. I could not profit off of their pain. If it was the Dentists and Doctors and Lawyers I woulda cared less about profiting off of their loss. But it wasnt them that populated my region. It was my people who populated the region. The rich fracks bleeding my people were the minority. I would have to make the majority suffer for my own gain. I could not. I never will. I would die before making my people suffer. Other similar events have happened in my life. I cannot profit off of other peoples sufferings. This leads me to the point where I must place myself in independence of my society since the disparity of profit has nearly destroyed the middle class.

You should account for inflation, and use only 75K, and plough 25K back into the capital every year.
I suppose this depends on the nation of origin. At the moment I think US future is bleak. But I never thought that this topic would delve into these things. But it was I who began to turn the topic from what to do with a million bucks to what is the wisest thing to do with a million bucks.

So on a whim... what is it that people want most dearly that they think a million bucks will buy them?
