I am Shaka's worst enemy, but he still likes me...

I was just playing this game, and trading with Shaka. Then one turn he cancels open borders with me (but not all trades) and when I try to renegotiate he tells me he will never trade with me, his worst enemy. He is still pleased with me, however. Is it usual for AI to have a worst enemy, even when they like everyone?

I've had this happen to me once before. I don't understand what causes it, it's so weird.

IIRC, AIs always have a worst enemy: if you are liked least (even if you are liked) then you are defaulted to worst enemy. odd

it's your vassals that are causing that.

AIs do not always have a worst enemy. if they are cautious or higher with everyone, they have no worst enemy which is wonderful, you can trade safely yay!

but ... their attitude towards you, or anyone, is their TEAM's attitude towards your entire TEAM. PAs, vassals, and Teams that you setup in game options all count for this. because you have vassals, he's not pleased with your team ... he's Furious or something with Isabella and/or whoever that is researching Constitution, and that combined with his Pleased towards you is enough to put your team as his worst enemy.

same thing could happen if he had a vassal. same thing can mess up relationships between you and your own vassal, if you have more than one vassal. you can have two vassals that are Friendly with you, but if they aren't Friendly with each other, they're not officially at Friendly with you.

If an enemy sees you as a miliary threat, they might jut act like you're worse enemies. It's happened to me before, it's really annoying, i reccomend a quick prompt conquest....

oh i love posting the good news that many people don't know about. those times when i can actually do trades without worrying about that worst enemy junk for a little while can be oh-so-handy! have fun taking full advantage of this until you decide it's time to make yourself somebody's worst enemy, or whatever your playstyle is that day .
