How good are you guys at this classic game?

A good version can be found at www.webpacman.com; click "Pac Links" on the left, and then click the first link, which says "Tetris."

On this version, my personal best (and I'm not sure how good this really is, which is partly why I started this thread) is getting to the 28th level, with 184 lines cleared and a score of 169,357. (I started on the 10th level; obviously the score and the lines cleared would be a lot higher if I started on the 1st).

Wait until Sulla gets here. He managed to get over 700,000 once and that's better then the "official" record.

Look here

Oh, and I'm not trying to discourage you. Keep trying. :D

Every version of Tetris is different, and it's usually pointless to compare scores across different ones. My own personal preference is for the NES version: it was one of the earliest ones to come out and it remains one of the most difficult. I've been playing for over 15 years now, pushing up my high score slowly but steadily (I discuss this in more detail in the post that Berrie linked to above). Here's the current top score:

According to Twin Galaxies, this would be the second-highest score on record; Harry J. Hong has an unbelievable 842,147 that is far in excess of what I can do right now. But hey, that's still pretty good, right? :)

Has anyone else tried this version of Tetris before, or remember playing it years ago?

Wow, Sullla, I'm dumbfounded. :goodjob:

Indeed. That's why I'd be curious to see you give the version I linked to a go and see how badly you beat me. ;)

Nope, not me. Do you know if there's an online version?

I looked at the version you linked to, and not surprisingly I did very poorly. I'm used to using a controller for Tetris; trying to use a keypad was an exercise in frustration. Now if that game would let you plug in an external joypad... ;)

If you'd like to see a sample of me actually playing this game, here's a video I made a couple of weeks ago:

http://www.garath.net/Sullla/Videos/recovery.mpg

As with most video files, this one is rather large (~10MB) so you may want to right-click and choose "save target as" or whatever the equivalent may be for best watching. I named this video "Recovery", because it shows me working myself into trouble and then out of it again. Here is the accompanying self-commentary, for the curious:

Let's see if I can give you some comments... I misplace the very second piece of the game, getting off to a bad start immediately. Second mistake comes at 0:17 of the video; I place the T-piece on the left side, rather than rotating it twice and dumping it on the three right-most tiles. That blocks off the open space for the following yellow L-piece. I'm forced then to build up a stack in the middle of the screen (NOT a good idea! - it's OK to go high on the sides, but not in the middle), although I salvage things somewhat with a fancy little move using the red J-piece at 0:23. The I-piece, S-piece, I-piece sequence that follow saves my bacon and clears out some much needed space.

I tread water over the next few seconds, as the stack gets dangerously high in the middle once again. Another I-piece at 0:37, followed by a perfectly-timed J-piece gets me out of trouble yet again. (I played well here but definitely caught some breaks!) The S-piece at 0:40 is a total disaster; I do what I can to minimize the damage, but there's no place to put the darn thing! Fortunately the next three pieces fit together perfectly and cut the stack down further. After that it's a pretty routine cleaning up of the situation, although I should mention that the L-piece at 0:53 was a nice little break to plug the right corner. The Z-piece at 0:55 majorly sucks, but now I'm out of danger and can work around it with ease. After clearing everything out at 1:10, I kill myself off by hitting the turbo button, hehe.

I hope you can see why I love Tetris so much. A tremendous amount goes into even one minute of playtime - I hope my comments demonstrate that somewhat! And at Level 19, there's no time to think, only act and react; it took me years of practice to be able to make decisions in the split seconds you see in the video. Maybe this is kind of silly, but I thought I'd share it with you.

Enjoy. :)

Cool vid/commentary. At first I thought my video player was messed up due to the speed.

I made my own tetris program with VB.

My preferred play mode is one I called "piled high and deep; the game starts with 12 rows of junk already present, and each time a line is made, the junk beneath the line rearranges. If you get rid of all the junk you get a huge bonus. My personal high score is 185 lines, from 470 blocks. I've had longer games, though:

When playing with the piece preview I've managed to get to level 26 (>250 lines).

Starting at level 10. Had this insanely good run by my standards, before this my high score was less than 200k...

I played hours and hours of the NES tetris when I was kid and it's still my favourite version. I was pretty good at it, but I don't have a NES anymore.

I've got Tetris DS for the...... well DS and in the end I got around the 5 and a half million mark but I believe it to be unlike the original Tetris in that it's possible to keep a block from 'locking' if you continue to 'spin' it, allowing you time to decide where to put it.
