Installing Beyond the Sword will patch your version of [civ4] vanilla. This will make it incompatible with our current game. You can find more information on this in various sub-forums, like the multi-player forum and the GOTM forum. It is possible to make a dual-install though, instructions can be found in various places, just ask it in the technical support forum when you get the game.

I'm not getting BTS for awhile so will patch up when the rest of the turnplayers do too.

edit- i should really read what forums things are in before posting. However this is an issue for the mtdg too :)

Let's consider if we should patch up regardless of whether players are getting BtS, assuming the patch is available to all. I'd be in favor of patching so we don't place unnecessary burdens on those who get BtS to do unusual things. Some of us are very familiar with dual installs, but others might not be.

Thanks for the warning

If there is no objection, I would like to rename this thread
"Apply the new patch needed for BtS install?". Another thread is an option, but don't want to waste too many bits.

I'm getting BtS as soon as it gets to Europe. I hope they shipped it as swiftly as they shipped Civ4 when it came out. I also hope we choose to allow the "patching" as I don't have disk space for a second seperate install of Civ4 Vanilla.

Well, is it even possible to run the game in a new patch version as we locked modified assets (we did, didn't we?)?

Well it might be a while until i get BTS, it has been raining constantly since 3am and is set to rain all night and into tomorrow :(

I have been away from the Demogame for nearly three months after taking a personal month break away from CFC .

More than likely I would wait untill I get a steady income flowing in.

Instructions for a dual-install (shamelessly stolen from the HOF sub-forum :))

1. Copy "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" in Program Files/Firaxis Games, to "Sid Meier's Civilization IV v1.61".

2. Rename "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" in My Documents/My Games, to "Sid Meier's Civilization IV v1.61".

3. Install the BTS.

4. Run from one directory or the other to get the version you want. You'll also be able to install mods separately for the two versions, save games will be separate for the two versions, etc. The new version will have a clean install with no mods, which is probably what you want (since many old mods won't work).

Would this cause any adverse effects on my hard drive space? Since I am trying to remain below 70% used.

Any dual install will have space implications.

maybe some one can hack a patch thats asks what version you want to run....that would help some of the space issues.

Depending on how rigid the patch to BtS-level is for Vanilla you need to secure certain files. With 2 shortcuts on your desktop I don't quite see why you need a patch then.

The idea would be to not copy the entire directory, but only the "before" and "after" versions of the files. Then the program to choose a patch level could copy the desired file versions into the real game directory, and launch. This would work very well as long as you don't want to have two instances of the game running at different patch levels at the same time. I'd love to have a computer powerful enough to do that, but alas it can just barely run the game.

When I try to open the (newest) savegame it tells me that the save has been protected regarding something or other about my mods folder and then immediatly switchs to "Load failed", then my game closes.

Whaaaaa?!

Thats because we are using v1.61 patch, when you (assuming you installed BTS)
have the v1.74 patch. Don't worry i am having the same problems at the moment!
