Actually, most cities have the name used in the current game language, not their local name.

E.g. Athens, not Athinai

well, i always wondered why on english maps, literally ALL dutch cities have their original dutch names, except Den Haag, for that the english have a translated version, but I guess firaxis is playing safe by just accepting this common-spread translation issue, altough if you ask me, it's the english language itself not beeing consistently and firaxis should not follow that inconsistently! But, the we're ending up in an never ending discussion i guess...
Germans don't translate everything either, and these days, as i live near the border I know, both in NL and Germany roadsigns are beeing replaced removing the translated names(arnheim for example) and putting original names(Arnhem) on the signs..
as in NL they are removing signs:"Aken, dutch version" and replacing them with the original german name:"Aachen"

I think there's a change of naming taking place in europe...where original names are preferred...

maybe, since i favor original names, firaxis could make a special tag:"original names" so independend from the language you choose to play, you always get the name of the city in it's original language? I'd favor such an option!

I will allow them to call Den Haag The Hague, if they change New York to Nieuw York :P

That seems reasonable. It might be nice for people who speak Dutch to see Den Haag, but it might be confusing for those unlucky few who have yet to master that beautiful language. ;) I'm thinking about young kids particularly, for them seeing names like Moskva (or whatever Russian call Moscow), Athinai, Den Haag etc. might just a bit too confusing.

Let's flood the world with Dutch! LOL

We're about to get flood by the north sea, because we're the only morons on the planet living below sea level, so, why not flood the rest of the world with "dutch" to make them remember us for the times when we will be washed away by the rising sea! ROFL

Well..

The names of Moscow and Athens are in English because there is neither Cyrillic nor Greek alphabet in the game.
I also noticed this problem with the name of the Hague.

The HRE has Prague and Vienna, not Praha and Wien.

Oporto should be Porto in the portuguese civ. who the hell calls it Oporto anyway? I'm portuguese and live in england and no ive met in england calls it Oporto. what a ridiculous addition of the letter "O".

If the names bother you why not renaming the cities, then.

so instead of 1 doing the work properly for 1.000.000players, you recommend that the 1 or 2% who bothers, 10.000 or 20.000 do it themself and the rest just doesn't care?

what a waste of global human resources, but then again, playing a game is a waste of resources anyway

Its more simple. I think that all names are in English. Its just that every dutch cityname translates into english without changing. What do you suppose Arnhem or Nijmegen are in english? (great cities mind you).

It just that Den Haag (or 's Gravenhage) is the only dutch cityname used in the game that has a different translation into English.
