Dear Readers:
The free press is possibly the most important thing in a democracy. The idea that every person has a right to make his or her opinions public, with paper and ink (or some other means), and that every person has a right to hear or read about those opinions is the foremost pillar of freedom, and therefore of democracy.
While our fledgling republic, newly liberated from our colonial rulers, has an excellent informational press with excellent editorial sections, I realized that we have no journal of opinion, debate, and cultureand that is a key part of the free press.
Inspired by two sets of sources (The Nation and The Weekly Standard, and Harper's and The Atlantic Monthly) in the United States, the presses of The Republic are intended to be a forum for the publication of in-depth political analysis, political debate [read: transcripts of chatroom discussions] cultural criticism, investigative journalism, and new fiction and literature by Civilitas' finest writers.
I hope that you will all enjoy it andif you cancontribute.
Sincerely,
Lockesdonkey,
Ad interim Editor-in-Chief
(if somebody else wants to run this thing, I'll be more than happy to let them)
