(I had this idea a while ago but now I think with the espionage and late-game additions in BtS it could be worth a try.)

We're dumb and we're proud of it. We're not allowed to run scientists, ever (stupid eggheads). We cannot build any building or wonders that would allow us to run scientists, generate great scientists, or increase our beaker production directly. We are allowed to use the research slider, because we might be idiots but we're no fools.

Version: Beyond the Sword 3.02
Mods: NO
Leader: Pacal (Mayas)
Difficulty: Prince
Map: Continents
Size: Standard
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
World wrap: Cylindrical
Opposition: 6 random AIs

Special rules:

Space race victory ONLY (even dumb people want to go to Alpha Centauri)

Variant rules:

  • Cannot build monastery, laboratory, library, observatory, university, Oxford University, Red Cross, The Great Library, The Space Elevator, University of Sankore, Aluminum Co, Standard Ethanol, or National Park.
  • Cannot hire scientists.
  • Any Great Scientists must be disbanded.
  • Cannot build Research.
  • Cannot hire specialists under Representation.
  • Cannot switch to Free Religion.
The table is open for discussion on the variant rules. Specifically, I was wondering whether we need to have "no tech trading" on or not. Would it make this much too easy?

I'm looking for a roster of 4-5 players. As long as you've got BtS you're welcome to join. 24 hours got it, 48 hours to play.

that might be hard...

on a side note: When we discover Gun Powder, are we soo dumb we shoot on the wrong direction? :p

Anyway, i'll think about it.

Without science, you could only obtain technology through acquisition (trade or espionage or non-scientiest great people!) That means you have to wait till an AI get all required SS techs and steal them, afterwhich you have to sabotage his spaceship production and outbuild him ....

But, how do you see the early game? No science, no trading and no spies...
Take a civ with hunting, build lots of scouts and hunt for huts?

Sounds like too much of a challenge... Perhaps if you allow a beeline for writing....

Ok, so early game can keep up with science, but once AI starts building Libs and Unis, you lose pace.

Caste System is certainly allowed, but hiring scientists is not. Similarly Mercantilism and anything else that grants specialists.

The map is continents so that we can get off to a decent start by rushing our nearest neighbours, but then the other continent should be comparable or even ahead of us in tech. I tried it once with "no tech trading" enabled and it was too easy. I'm also not sure what the effect of the slower tech pace in BtS will be.

Like I said, suggestions are welcome.

Go for caste system, run merchants specialists to subsidise 100% research and then lightbulb GMs.

So, are you going for CE, seeing as you can't hire scientist specialists?

I'll join, if you'll have me. I can play Prince but have never been in a SG. If you want someone more experienced, I understand.

So no Representation . Or , if representation, no specialists at all.

That is a good question. Specialists under Rep are not scientists, but they do produce beakers directly. I would tend to agree, no specialists under Rep. What does everyone else think?

Welcome to the team, kirbystarfan.

Like you said, no beakers, so no merchants/engineers/artists producing beakers either.

Sign me up!

No Rep specialists is fine: unless we build Pyramids then there won't be the incentive to run Rep.

What about the GS from Physics? Delete him, or gift him?

If you've got room for a sixth player I'd like to sign up. Otherwise I'll just lurk and make smart-ass comments.
