Does BtS require the Warlords Expansion?

Do you have to have the Warlords expansion installed for Beyond the Sword to work? I just have Vanilla Civ IV and I don't want to buy BtS and have it not work.

No. BtS includes almost everything in Warlords. Everything but the scenarios.

So go ahead, you can buy BtS without needing Warlords. Have fun.
