Stealth Destroyer makes terrible escort

Is this a bug or a "feature"? I had a terribly nasty surprise when my aircraft carrier, pride of the fleet, escorted by 4 stealth destroyers was sunk by an enemy battleship - the stealth destroyers just hid and ran away rather then take on the battleship - this doesn't happen with regular destroyers - i suspect it is a result of the "stealth" flag - i tried it with stealths on top of transports and sure enough, the transports take the defense and die while the stealth ships just run away.

Has anyone noticed this? It really sucks in the endgame...

1- Because the stealth Destroyer replaces teh destroyer - i wouldn't mind so much if i could still build regular destroyers...

2- Because they are bloody STEALTH DESTROYERS, not submarines. If they have to expose themselves to escort a transport or god forbid, a carrier, then they better do so...the stealth aspect works if they are alone, or part of a stealth task group, but not if they are escorting big visible ships...then the destroyer part > stealth.

You should have an option to turn the stealth aspect on or off. That way you could also us them to protect wounded ships in major naval battles.
They will protect your fleet against enemy stealth destroyers, because they can see yours.

A agree...unfortunately I guess it will need to wait till the next patch? IF anyone notices...

1) So you are telling me that once you have the stealth ability, you cannot build a regular destroyer anymore??

I have not gotten this far in a game yet so I am curious about this aspect. From what I understand, this ship stays hidden on defense unless another ship with the stealth ability, right?

Thx

Yup, and battleships can't see them, so to them they were attacking undefended carriers (and to the game it seems).

Should really be looked at seeing, as already pointed out, destroyers upgrade to the stealth varient.

Exactly - this is a serious problem, since the stealth destroyer replaces the destroyer - otherwise it is a fine unit - 30 strength, 50% anti air.... the stealth aspect is alright...if it is NOT acting as a fleet escort - if it acts the way it should against other stealth destroyers, then it's clearly just a bug in the way the stealth flag is handled - otherwise we have the farce of an inferior enemy navy just charging in and sinking the transports and carriers because the stealth destroyers haven't the balls to engage...(and yes, I know there are missile cruisers as well, but it is preferable still to have the destroyers act if the cruisers are defeated or too wounded...)

If someone could move this to the bug forum then... =)

It really is pretty ********. Enemy units can't see it. Fair enough. Are you trying to tell me that the stealth destroyers in the fleet can't see the unit attacking everything else?

The best defender is supposed to rotate to the top of the stack. If my Battleships or Missile Cruisers are not the best defender, then the Stealth Destroyer should defend my air craft carriers and transports.

On the offensive it should be completely stealth. But what a nasty surprise when you go to attack what looks to be a vulnerable stack, and "OH CRAP! There's stealth destroyers in here."

I wonder if the stealth destroyers use their air interception abilities if they are in a fleet. The airplanes can't see them, so the situation is similar and the stealth destroyed has the best air interception ability of the entire navy (except for carrier based fighters/jet fighters).

So, I'm asking the people who have played with these ships a lot: have you ever seen them intercept airplanes when no carrier based fighters/jet fighters were available and the ships were undetected?

Yes, I've seen them interecept aircraft. However, if they don't intercept them, the air attack goes to something else in the fleet. So in a fleet of a transport and a stealth destroyer, if an air attack succeeds, it will hit the transport.

Thanks. That at least makes them useful units in a stack even if they don't intercept enemy ships. They can still detect enemy stealth destroyers and intercept enemy airplanes. Not that I think that the non-interception of ships shouldn't be fixed, but at least I'll know how to use them. I wonder if they suffer collateral damage from a battleship/missile cruiser attack if they are undetected.

BTW: I wonder what the airplanes must be thinking: Hey, what's shooting at us. I can't detect anything down there. Hmm, maybe that transport ship has a hidden anti-air missile system on board? Let's hit it and return home...

Didn't realise Destroyers upgraded to them...

Put this into Solver's 'unofficial' patch thread. He may be able to make an adjustment before the official patch does. It'll also have a better chance of being picked up there.

Well spoken. This is how it should work.

I haven't played far enough to see stealth destroyers. Are they flagless like privateers? If so, the enemy should rightly be able to choose which stack (the national stack or the flagless stack) to attack.

Adding an order to be stealthy or not would be useful otherwise or at least not obseleting normal destroyers as they still have a (rather obvious) role in the modern navy.

Exactly! ...

I think the defend/evade would be good... perhaps as a popup option like when you move into an enemy unit at peace early in the game (Does this mean you want to declare war)

So if a Stack moves into your Stealth unit containing stack [or your Stealth unit containing Stack moves into an enemy stack], and it would be the best, it will list the odds and say Evade/Engage

This should be the same for subs, or any Stealth units with Combat capacity.

how can a destroyer be stealthy anyway ?
