New unit; Advanced Submarine
"Suprised by destroyer coming out of a rain squal. Four hours depth charges. Contact lost, am pursuing in square Bruno Karl- UM"
This is going to be used in my alternative history mod as the german type 30 U-boat, but other people may want to use it as an advanced non nuclear submarine. Create a folder in your CivIII/art/units folder called typeXXX and put all the files from the Zip file in it. Add the unit to your scenario and give it some stats. I know there isn't realy much room for enhanced stats for the submarine in Civ III, but you may want to give this one the Nuclear sub stats, and improve the stats for the nuclear sub. O.K. fixed the problem with the sound entries, dont know how that one escaped me. Iv'e changed the link to point to a updated zip so Just download the files again if you have the early version, or add .wav to the end of each sound entry. More gremlins, fixed the torpedo problem; I didn't put .flc on the end of the AttackB entry, Iv'e checked the INI file all the way through this time, need more sleep, going insane, and all thats on the tele is the queen and the world cup! Here is a large shot of the sub ;Download the Files here; TypeXXX Last edited by Smoking mirror; Jun 01, 2002 at 12:24 PM. |

Great!!It's awesome!!I like specially the attack animations, and the idea of dive, and shoot the 2 torpedoes.I tried to make a Type VII U-boot, but It took a lot of time, and finally I gave up...But now we have your submarine. Thanks!!!

Papajohns; Yeah I know I often make my units bigger than usual, but for the most part its only because I havn't gotten aroud to making the smaller units. I'm going to make a midget submarine and Light tank, which will be smaller than the firaxis ones, I decided that a heavy tank was going to be the biggest land unit I would make, so I made it as big as I could. I also decided that if the battle ship is the biggest sea unit, then the submarine could be bigger than it is. Personaly , I think the nuclear submarine is too small, in real life they are nearly as big as a battleship, definately bigger than a WWII destroyer or a Sailing ship.
I like working with big units, cos they can have more detail (any smaller and the Star would never have shown up on my IS2 Tank) so thats why I've been doing the big units first, its easier to work with big units, therefore leaev doing the small units till I know what I'm doing. Also the main reason I'm making these units is so I can do a Scenario, Iv'e always wanted to be a games designer, and the Civ games are the closest I can get to that cos I can't do programing. With any luck all the units in my scenarion will be custom. P.s don't forget to give the unit the ranged attack tag, otherwise you can get big problems with the tanks acting like horny tortoises, trying to mount each other. Cheers for the feed back, perhaps I'll make a bigger nuclear sub too .

Smoking Mirror,
The ini file has a problem with the Sound Effects. You haven't included the file extensions. [Sound Effects] BLANK= DEFAULT= WALK= RUN=XXXRUN ATTACK1=Dive ATTACK2=ATTackB ATTACK3= DEFEND= DEATH=DeathExplosion DEAD= FORTIFY=XXXRun Everyone, in order to make sure that sounds will work with this unit, you need to add .wav to the end of each of the above sounds in the .ini file until Smoking Mirror fixes it. It could be that they will work the way it is now, but it's better to be sure.

O.K. iv'e fixed the bug and changed the link to the updated file, I forgot to put .flc on the end of the torpedo animatinon in the ini, so if you do that it will work (you can even do an update to games already in progress, i.e saved games, cos you don't have to change the bic file).
Any one now downloading the unit should find the problems fixed. |

Ok, now it works correctly. I have one question...It is possible to do a unique animation to bombard with the deck gun?

There are a few things against doing a deck gun animation, from technical matters (as mentioned above, difficulties with actualy representing a deckgun attack), and also the fact that although the 88mm gun sported singualy or in pairs by the german U-boats was effective as a weapon on land (used in panzers or AA guns) it was not much use at sea, it could take dozens of shots with the deck gun to sink even an unarmoured steam tanker, agaist destroyers or other escort ships the deck gun was almost useless, very much a last resort weapon, and most U-boat comanders would only use it on #1 unescorted, unarmoured supply ships, or #2 in the event of the conning tower being damaged and the u-boat being unable to dive.
I know some people want to give submarines a bombard attack, to make them more effective but I would strongly suggest giving the submarines higher attack and defence attributes instead. The A.I only realy uses ship bombardments to attack coastal terrain improvements, and to tell the truth I cant stand the idea of my unit running around firing its deck gun at peoples coastal irrigation. The u-boat just isn't any use as a bombardment weapon. Part of the tactical aspect of Civ is knowing when to use a submarine and when a destroyer would be the better weapon to use. I could do a deck gun animation, but it wouldn't look very good, and it would also be historicaly inacurate. |

This unit is great, and I like it a lot. That's why I have done a complete preview, to allow people to see how is this U-Boot. I hope you like it.
Bye!!!!!!
