Whenever I go into one of the advisor screens (like civics, military, etc) or engage in diplomacy with any computer, my computer will lag up for about 5-10 seconds causing everybody I am multiplayering with to have to wait for me.

But here's the trick, I have a great system (at least I think so) and can run Civ 4 and many other games on full settings.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5400+
2gb of 800mhz ram (Crucial brand)
320gb SATA Hard Drive
M2N32 Asus deluxe wireless NVidia 590 SLI ready motherboard
2 x 256MB NVIDIA 8600 GT XXX SLI (in SLI mode)

Anyone know why I am having this problem?

you know I never seem to have luck asking for help on these forums :P

So, we know that it isn't a Vista issue or a networking issue.

I would try a reinstall of Civ, and then defraging the disk for now.

Do you notice any sudden drops in performance when do anything else (i.e. playing other games?).

Auldian is probably right, it is probably an AV, if you use Norton AV, I would suggest that you switch to a antivirus that doesn't hog a bunch of resources, like AVG or Avast. (both are free, and work just as well as Nortan). Or you can use NOD32, which I'm told uses less resources than AVG, however it isn't free. (I believe it is the same price as Norton).

I'm using AVG, and so is my wife. She has a slower computer and does not have the same lag jolts I do when accessing any of the civic style screens (or initiating chat with NPC)

It's a fresh install also. I'm guessing its hardware related somehow but I don't understand why everything else is fast except that.

hmpf a buddy have the same problem with advisors! He have a very good pc !

I know he have Vista, Avast and a geforce 8600MGS on a Santa Rosa Motherboard.

Perhaps then it is the video card? Both video cards are very similiar.

Wonder if they have newer drivers that'll fix the problem.

does your buddy run in SLI mode?

Also most updated drivers doesnt seem to fix it either =(

Nothing I do seems to fix this problem. But it's good to know it's probably the video card.

I have the same problem sort of.

E6750 Pentium Dual Core, 2.66Ghz
2GB ram (dunno clock speed)
8800 GTS 640meg

playing Rhyes the game runs along nicely at a decent clip but now when I enter diplomatic chat the face stays static for about 1-2 seconds so you know it lagged a bit.
Nowhere near as huge as yours but its a bit irritating.

Also sometimes when I'm in the beginning of a turn where cities build things and it transfers you to each city as something new is built and requires you to make choices occasionalyl it lags for 2-3 seconds in mid-pan to my next city when it needs me to give an action/order.
