Hi All - I'm new at this but I'd want to give this a serious try so I'm starting a PBEM game with the following settings:

  • Game: Civ IV BTS Patch #303
  • Difficulty Level: Noble (for all players)
  • Map: Continents
  • Size: Small
  • Climate: Temperate
  • Sealevel: Medium
  • Era: Ancient
  • Speed: Normal
  • Options: None
  • Victory types permitted: All
  • Game Turn Limit: 0
  • City Elimination Limit: 0
    [*]AIs: None

I've browsed through other PBEM games and the following rules of commitment seem to be in effect so I'd like to enforce them here as well:

  • You agree to contact me (through e-mail, private message, a third party or other means) as soon as possible if you encounter technical difficulties or other circumstances that prevent you from fulfilling these commitments.
  • You agree to act in a courteous manner toward all other players at all times in your "out-of-game" communication.
  • You agree to inform me when you are going to be unavailable for a period of greater than 24 hours.
  • You agree to check your e-mail at least once daily (at least twice daily is preferred).
  • You agree to promptly respond to all messages - immediately, if possible.
  • You agree to complete and forward your turn within 24 hours of receiving it.
  • You agree to refrain from "in-game" communication with another player until making contact with that player's civilization. "In-game" communication refers to sharing information about your civilization or other players' civilizations, making deals, proposing alliances, etc.
  • You agree to play the game to completion unless personal or technical circumstances render it impossible for you to do so.

I'm looking for 7 other players. For those interested, please PM me these details:

  1. Your CFC user name (required)
  2. Your e-mail address (required)
  3. Your leader preferences (top three choices, if any)
  4. Your timezone in GMT format
  5. The password you would like for your turn (required)
  6. Your SMTP server address (optional), and
  7. Any customized civilization information (Leader Name, Civ Description, Short Description, and/or Civ Adjective)

I'll be updating the list below as each join:

  1. RabaYuugi - random leader
  2. burlicconi - Viliem Van Oranje
  3. slaze - Sitting Bull
  4. SpikeIt - Zara Yaqob
  5. seanscarlett - Charlemagne
  6. xatsmann - Darius

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Great! I've got two players.

burlicconi - you mentioned settings for barbarian and tech trading. What settings are ideal? I was thinking of turning both on.

Also, I'm not so sure anymore whether I'll get enough interest soon so I was thinking that if I don't complete the list above by this weekend, we'll just get started and have AIs for the rest of the Civs. Just a thought.

Barbarians are free choice- don't have to think much about it. If you like it, let there be barbarians.
Tech trading- this is much important setting, because of nature of playing. If techs trading are allowed, many players will trade techs, and game can turn into some "manager", what can spoil the game. But, it also can mean that many civs can be 'up-to-date" with techs, and it's OK...
If disable tech trading, it can give big boost for long-term-strategy of development, but it can make some civs very weak (but it is result of their poor game style, no as pacts from other nations)...
Maybe tech brokering can be good?

I'm interested, but I'm running version 302. Are the two versions compatible for PBEM? I've been hesitant to upgrade to 303 due to some of the issues it created for people, especially since game play-wise it didn't change the game at all. I'm also assuming you'll be upgrading the game to 3.13 when the patch is released.

Might I also suggest keeping the roster smaller than 8. I'm in a couple 8 person PBEMs which, while fun, only turn around a turn maybe every week if lucky. I've seen a few PBEMs where the players each play as two civilizations. That could be interesting... Just schedule them back to back in the roster.

In the meantime, I'll PM my info.

Welcome to the game, SpikeIt. I'm not so sure whether 3.03 will be backward-compatible with 3.02 but we can always see.

With regards to keeping the roster small, I'm inclined to agree. Basically, if no one else shows interest in joining in the next 24 hours, we'll just have the four of us play. And then maybe have the AIs work the other Civs? What do you guys feel about that?

I've decided to turn tech trading and barbarians on. Decision to trade techs will be up to the discretion of the player. It's all part of strategy.

Finally, yes, I'll be installing any and all latest patches that become available unless there is strong evidence that the new patch will render the game unplayable.

I'm fine with the AI's filling in the open slots. As for 3.02 - I'll try it out. If it doesn't work, I'll upgrade and hope for the best. 3.13 should hopefully be out soon anyways rendering the issues of 3.03 irrelevant. Well, as long as the new patch isn't broken. ;)

Ok to me whatever you decide, as long as you write it on the forum ;)
Maybe yo wait more for other players, but it's no problem even if we start now.
And about patch- 3.13 can be released every day, so it means that we can immediately upgrade our versions...

I tried launching our PBEM game but my Civ IV crashed. I'm searching the forums for possible solutions but haven't found any. More to the point, nobody is responding to others who have opened threads complaining of the same problem.

I have the same problems when I try connecting to a PitBoss game running on my PC so I thought I'd try PBEM but I get the same error. Any ideas?

Edit: Hopefully the next patch (3.13?) will fix this. Does anybody know when this will be out?

Edit #2: Read the notes for the next release, which is indeed 3.13. It includes a fix on muliplayer load. I still can't believe though that the rest of you aren't affected by the bug I'm experiencing. :(

I'm not playing any multi-player in BTS. My games are in Warlords and Vanilla. I was not aware of the multi-player BTS issue though. :(

My understanding is that the patch is due any day now.

I'm flexible in everything, but I'd rather not play with AI, even if we have to do a small map with 4-5 people. No tech trading is probably the fairest, but i can handle trades. And Barbarians sound good. But in all things, it's your game, do as you like. I'm just happy to be on board.

I'm going to Vegas this weekend for my birthday and will be back sunday afternoon. sorry if this slows things down.

That's okay, slaze. I'm equally glad to have you on board. I'll keep trying to get the game started this weekend. In the meantime, enjoy Vegas!

So, what's the status now? Are we gonna play with 4-5 players or wait for more.
About bug crashing- I can try to start PM game. I once started Warlords and send ONLY ONE turn to my friend, and it passed without problems. Don not now about BTS, but I can try ;) At the end, 3.13 will came probably next week...
Also, OK for barbarians, and tech trading can be considered as brokering:hmm:
So, have a nice game :hatsoff:

Hi burlicconi - Tried starting the game and it still crashes. We have two options: wait for 3.13 or let's try your idea and you start the game.

I tried tonight to launch PBEM game and it seemed to be OK. I send 2-3 times to another player, loaded without problem...
So, if we are definitely interested, we can try ;)
Or we can wait- choice is our :)
Also have to agree number of players. And AI- I don't think they can jelp us much, except if we are planing to replace them is reasonable time with human players...
So, I would like to hear other opinions ;)

I'm cool with starting whenever. As much as I'd prefer to wait for the patch, I'd rather not hold up the game killing any momentum to get it started.

I can go either way when it comes to AI players. It does hold spots for people to take over, but I think that would be unlikely to occur. Depending on where the AI end up can lead to an unfair starting situation. I played a PBEM where one human shared a land mass with 3 AI, while the rest of us shared a continent by ourselves. That really game the lone human player a nice advantage - maybe too nice.

Anyhow, if we go with no AI and 4 or 5 humans, keep the map a little smaller. Standard would be too large.
