Carabodes
Timid Viking Warlady
(the ALC metamorphoses)
EDIT: Chapter II is now on page 2.
Here I was, happily wonder-building, all through vanilla and warlords, always winning due to low level playing. I kept military only for protection, and only fought if being attacked. I mostly stayed friends with each and every one, gave away techs when asked, had open borders with everyone that wanted, traded all sorts of resources, in fact, the life of the true pacifist. Once in a blue moon I visited the forum just to see if there was anything interesting to read, like a new patch coming out soon. From time to time I enjoyed a little multiplayer game with an old friend. The latter always won, but I got the most wonders, so I didn’t mind being second.
Then my friend bought me BtS.
All the new features made me visit the forum more frequently. At last I registered, and some automated function invited me to post something in the “I’m new to this forum”-thread. The snowball became an avalanche. I really started reading, and I started posting. And I read some more, and more …..
And then …. … …. Oh, yeah, I found the ALC-thread.
By the time I found it, game #18 was running near completion. I read through all 18 games. Day and night for more than a week I ate, breathed and dreamt ALC. Gave me a headache, that one did.
And the beast within was released!
This afternoon I enjoyed a multiplayer game with my friend, our third round into that particular game. I’m Huyana, my friend is Fredrick.
The first round:
I executed a MC-slingshot. I built the GW, oracle and GL. And that was that, wonder-wise (and I’m +50% wonderbuild as Huyana, go figure). My friend is getting all the wonders now, Fredrick must be ever so pleased with his human leader.
The second round:
I discovered I shared my continent with Julius and Mansa, and promptly decided: They’re dead! I started producing units en masse. Not being used to warfare, though, I missed the early rush, still have no idea how to time that exactly right. And I had no metal from the start (neither had Mansa), whilst Julius had both copper and iron. So, I just made myself a nice SoD with a mixture of units with different levels of upgradings.
The third round:
I went to war against Julle, by then I had 6 cities, he had 8 or 9. Praetorians? Bah! The only good praetorian is a dead praetorian. I threatened Mansa to join in on the fun (he still had no metal, I had iron). The poor sod was fighting for his life, but he served as a welcoming distraction. Half way through the war I squeezed some money (over 500 gold + 2 per turn) from Julle for a 10-turn peace whilst I gathered my forces and licked my wounds. During that period I did a Philosophy slingshot with a GS, got Liberalism and Astronomy from that. Mansa and Julle kept on fighting until Mansa begged to be my vassal. I agreed, and Mansa and Julle made peace.
Then I went to war! (Poor Mansa had to join in
) When Julle had but 2 cities left, I asked him to capitulate. He refused (silly idiot) and said I had made an insulting demand. He refused! After having had to move his capital 5 times, he still didn’t understand which way the wind was blowing??? Oh, well, Julle is no more. Good riddance!
And thanks to my specialists, I’m not too far behind in techs, my friend is leading, I’m second although I’m only running at 30% (wars don’t come cheap).
And now, if I only can learn how to use the right units at the right moment, and give them the proper promotions, I might just take on yet another civ (Monty is already annoyed with me, why I don’t know, I’ve just met the guy – but he’s Monty, that’s reason enough, I suppose.) Mansa is (no wonder – dragging him into long lasting wars) cautious (-2) with me. Now all I have to do is make him a bit more unfriendly, just so that he no longer wants to be my vassal. And then he’s d-e-a-d!!!
And here ends the saga of how to turn a peace-loving, wonder-building timid Viking into a roaring, warmongering beast of a berserk.
