Starting Techs: The Road, Mysticism
Leaders: Pope Innocent II (Spiritual/Organized), Pope Urban II (Spiritual/Imperialistic)
Unique Unit: Templar Knight, replaces Knight, starts with City Raider 1
Unique Building: Temple Church, a bank made available by Theology

For city names, I've gone with (besides Vatican City) Papal states, Templar states, and various cities conquered during the Crusades.

Status:
-IN PROGRESS-
Need to
-Skin the UU and UB
-Find out how to add Civilopedia entires for the UU and UB
-Find out how to add the UB

Need
-Anyone who has some free time and could skin the UU and UB.
-Suggestions in general, if anything seems unbalanced or if you think something should be changed for historical accuracy.
-Any modders at all who can help a newb

This is my first mod, so it may be a tad choppy.

Special thanks to:
Everyone who has made tutorials over in the tutorial forum
CXDamian, for telling me I -could- give a mounted unit a non-mounted promotion.
Van Helsing and Assasssin's Creed, because if not for them, I wouldn't have had the idea.

-Reserved for Updates and Screenshots-

It's been shown before in the Basil II leaderhead for the Byzantine mod that the Incan head-dress can make a lovely mitre.

Would that avatar happen to be from Morrowind?

Also, I noticed this too, but sadly... I have no art skills whatsoever. More of a history buff/writer. Generally that's kept me out of modding, but with Civ4... I've been craving more leaders and civs.
More realism as well, so I figured I should get into it. Still bugs me that Hinduism is founded -after- Buddhism. Though if I had it my way, there'd be thousands of techs and it'd take a week to play one game.
If I can get this mod working, I also want to start adding leaders to the various other nations, -truly- balance the UB's and traits (I hate how Firaxis hears "balance" and thinks "Let's give people with strong traits a weak UU/UB, and vice versa. :D" There should be no strong and no weak. -Strategy- should give one strength.

Great stuff.
More realism as well, so I figured I should get into it. Still bugs me that Hinduism is founded -after- Buddhism.

You seem to be unaware of Choose Religions. Never have the world divided between Buddhism and Hinduism again! (Plus, it can be made default, so you don't have to go custom game every time)

Well hello, Anonymous.

My problem is not everyone founding those two religions, but the lack of realism. In real life, Buddhism was founded a considerably long time -after- Hinduism, yet Hinduism (Polytheism) is discovered a good bit -after- Buddhism (Meditation) in Civ4.

Sorry for the slowness. Been having PC problems, but they'll be fixed soon.

Al that's really left is working out any kinks and finding a skin for the Templar and the Temple Church.
Too bad I can't do skinning/modeling.

I need thoughts on how the UU, leaders, and UBs sound.
A friend of mine told me the UB sounded a bit overpowered, though I'm not entirely sure (since Banking is a trait everyone will always get, and it comes soon after Theology) ...Though if it's weak, I'd love to give it +2 creative or a small maintenance discount, to make it more realistic.
That way when the popes take over a city, they can simply build a Temple Church to help bring it under order.

I'm trying to design this civ so one could play it out like the real vatican.
Found an early religion, make the Apostolic Palace, spread your religion like wildfire, build a lot of templar, expand.

If I can make this mod work effectively, and people enjoy it, I'd like to expand into a total Crusades scenario. That shouldn't be so hard, seeing as how Saladin comes with vanilla Civ4, and I've seen a very beautifully done Teutonic Knight skin.

Yep, the avatar is my favorite character from Morrowind, my other favorite game.

I sympathize with your inability to do leaderhead work. In fact, I am really only good at generating ideas and data charts; whenever I try to mod, I break things. I've been tossing around the idea of an Italian civ with the following three leaders:

1 - Pope Gregory I
2 - Medici
3 - Mussolini

Unfortunately, I don't think any really good leaderheads have been made for these figures.

Il Duce as a leader... Fin/Org?
Not only would it be hard to make a decent leaderhead of him, imagine trying to make the animation for the hand-twirl.

Easiest possible leaderhead to do...
Richard Nixon.
If you think about it, he's already cartoonish looking.

I had a hard enough time finding good pictures for both Popes in this mod... artists seem to argue over how they both looked.

I was tempted to, as I'm a fan of John Paul II.
After I get this mod working, may add him. I was considering Spiritual/Charismatic, with a favorite civic of Free Religion.

Nah, not theocracy.
I was considering Free Religion because he did believe strongly that people be able to choose their faith (Something I've found to be rare in religious leaders, rare but very admirable.)
Pacifism is also a good choice.

Charismatic definetly would be his trait, as he was even able to talk Fidel Castro into loosening his anti-religious platform.

my vote goes for emancipation. He worked closely with western leaders in the 80's to free his homeland of Poland during the Solidarity movements for freedom. He was one of the people at the time who stood up against Soviet oppression of rights.:D

I'm keeping an eye on this. I'm looking for a Vatican civ to add to my mod. Would you mind if I use this when it's done?

Of course not.

Work's goin a bit slow though. Memory issues are keeping me off of Civ4, and I'm lacking skins for the UU and UB.
At the latest, this'll be done around Christmas, getting new memory on the 20th.

Ok, that should work. The first real BETA release of the mod shouldn't be coming out until christmas anyway. Thanks!

Excellent! So this is modular and can be added to my Civ Gold folder? I'm tired of Rome with their legions having to compete with all the 19th century rulers on my maps of Europe. Would like to see some other Renaisance Italian civs like Savoy, Florence, Genoa, Venece, Sicily with UU's and Leader Heads.
