Here's mine from today: finally decided to tackle the Malinese in Viceroy (of course). Was about to reload after 6 barbarian axemen spawned on my doorstep. Since it was my 3rd turn they all turned Malinese!!
Went for Regio Tripolitana and then Alexandria. The latter city always has the Great Library and the Great Lighthouse. Took care of my science (even at 0% I popped paper in 10 turns) for the majority of the game. (Got 4 great scientists)
By the time of international conferences, everybody was pleased or friendly with me (even the usually impolite Arabs and isolationist Japanese). Got Thebes, Athens and finally Hesperides from 3 conferences. Got my goal of 16000 gold in 1620! From then on it was science and got to electricity in 1700. (Still only had a Warren G. Harding score, but could have been worse...without luck):king:

Well, I suppose this fits here - I was playing as Greece, and had managed to conquer all of Egypt, as well as founding Byzantion in the north. I built the Great Wall, was relatively safe. A Great Prophet (or priest, I forget what it's called right now) spawned, and I got Theology, meaning I founded Christianity in Tanis (or Djanet I think it was called before I conquered it... near where Suez is, anyway).

A while later, shortly before the Arabs were due to spawn, I got another GP. Instead of deciding to go for Divine Right and get Islam, I shipped him to Tanis and built the Church of the Navity. Two turns later the Arabs spawned, but the first thing that happened was Christianity spread to Mecca! The Arabs converted to Christianity, and in their subsequent war with Babylon and Persia spread it to the entire Middle East! For a good 20 turns (at least) the entire leaderboard was Christian!

My recent Ethiopian game needs a mention here.

I spawned, settled Aksum, moved my units to protect Aksum and found another city at the soruce of the Nile wait a turn or two. The flip period happened. I received the nearby Egyptian city complete with a Great Prophet in it which I used to found Christianity in turn 108. Nice.

Another case of bloody good luck I have had is with England although this is historical and not with the recent patches. This is happened to me on 2 occasions and at least one other member of this board once. As England I always send caravels circumnavigating with Explorers so that I can nab any goody huts. Twice now as England I have used this tactic and discovered Astronmy in a hut shortly after getting Optics. The huts that have given me it have been the one in the Jungle on Java and the one on the Hill NW of Washington in North America.

Speaking of Astronomy, I had the same pleasant surprise when playing as the Vikings (monarch) with 15 turns to go in 1300, I popped Astronomy in Havana. Made my first (and only) American colony in 1360.

Just for future reference:

Corm,

The new patch won't let you find Astronomy in a hut anymore?

I use that trick (which I learned from you, God Bless you my son!) all the time. It always works sooner or later. I've done it with Spain, France, Netherlands, England, Japan.....

Ryry

PS: By "sooner or later" I mean that you just gotta keep hitting huts. Sometimes you get it at the first one, sometimes it takes 5 or 6, but I have always managed to get it....

I had an unlucky story, I played as the Dutch comlpeted the first 2 UHVs. I had all the spices in 1770 but in 1775 the Indians spawned and took my 1 of my spices...

I have an unlucky story too. I was playing as Japan, and had just gotten optics. I send a caravel out to circumnavigate. (If it doesn't strongly impede my goals, I always try to circumnavigate first, because it blocks several computers from winning historical victories.)
On my way I run into the Inca. The adventurers spawn. I figured I might as well Declare and take a Incan city or two. After I capture two cities, Inca calls, offering me another city in exchange for peace. My economy and stability were fine so I took the offer.

I found my self in control of an undefended city with a barb dog soldier in position to take it next turn. So much for a UHV.

Speaking of unlucky...I started America in Monarch today. Got Democracy, switched to Statue of Liberty in Washington (with bureaucracy, 2 coals/2 lumbermills/stone/copper online) and had a great engineer in the 1780's. (I had about 500 hammers to go). Hurried the statue...next turn I was told somebody else built it first!!! (And I was doing so well, having conquered most of NAm except for Spanish Mexico and west coast)
