To avoid a rep hit- what do you have to be careful about when declaring war??

can you declare war and attack on same turn or do you have to wait a turn??

I'll answer your second question first...it's easier. You can attack on the same turn AFTER formally declaring.

To avoid rep hit is just a little more complicated:

1. You can have NO units in their territory...not even an exploring boat.
2. You must not have any active 20-turn deal with them where you are giving anything per turn where they have already fulfilled all or part of the bargain. That includes peace and alliances, as well as techs or lump sum gold.
3. If you have a trade route through their territory with a 3rd civ, war will break that route and cause a rep hit to you.
4. There are situations where an MPP involving a 3rd civ could break an 20-turn deal, but that gets a bit too complicated to go into briefly.

There are probably more, but that's off the top of my head. :)

thanks..

but say you have a boat in their territory can you remove it then declare war and then attack on same turn????

Yep! So long as you have no units in their territory at the moment you declare, you're good to go. :)

In my experience the rules aren't that strict. I have DOWed by simply attacking numerous times in the past but never really had any problems rep-wise.

I do not know the full particulars but I think that the only thing that matters is that you should not have any units in their territory at the beginning of the turn. If that is not the case, fire at will.

or you can wait until they have units in your territory and force them to move them or declare war

As long as the unit you are attacking is outside the other civ's cultural borders, and you have no units inside their borders, it is possible to do this without taking a rep hit.

I won't shoot at you, but Gramma Harriet has it correct. The key time is the moment war is declared, even if it is declared by simply executing an attack.

I'm not sure if you can attack an enemy unit that is just on the edge, but still inside, of the other civ's cultural borders. Has anyone tested that?

In fact there are three types of reputation: Trade, RoP, and MA(MPP). Trade and MA reps not sensetive to units in the border, and RoP has limit (4 or 8) I forgot.

My experience says otherwise. See above. I even remember doing small tests.

All deals are just possible.

Fire at will. :p

But if you have >4 units in their territory (and no ROP) at the start of the turn, wouldn't they have forced you to leave in the interturn? Perhaps you'd have to declare war then to take a rep hit. And maybe that's the only way?

Or vanilla could just be different from C3C in this invasion aspect.

Lord Emsworth, correct me if I'm reading your screenshots wrong, but it looks like you didn't have any units inside Russian territory at the beginning of the turn on which you attacked. Is that right? If so, it looks like that might be the operative time frame: the beginning of the turn.

Right, there were no units in Russian territory at the beginning of the turn. And I would draw the same conclusion about the operative time frame.

Thanks for test, Lord Emsworth, but I am sure, that I am right.
Trade reputation does not depend on "how many units you have when declare war". RoP reputation does. (RoP will be 25 gpt more expensive after first "RoP rape". I stress again: there are three type of reputations... + attitude, that is completle different.

I've heard that before regarding different types of reputation:
1) Trade (gpt);
2) ROP; and
3) What's the third? Peace Treaty, maybe?
It is MA (MPP) reputation. If you break your trade rep, you still can do MA with gpt. But If you have broken MA or MPP (Quit from war before agreement expire) no gpt for MA will be accepted. But will be possible for Lump sum.
