I have a few questions if anyone has the time to answer?

I'm currently in the mid-stages of a BBC Wonder Mod for CIV.

Once built, a free broadcast tower in all cities, boost to culture and economy in the city it's built in and 7 tradeable TV channels.

The latter is what i need a bit of help with. Where can I find the xml data for "7 hit musicals" for broadway or "7 hit rock songs" for rock and roll?

moreover how does the relationship work between "Hollywood" XML and wherever the "7 hit movies" are?

also, does anyone know if EACH of the 7 can be given a unique name to trade?

for instance:

BBC World
BBC News 24
CBBC
BBC Canada
BBC America
etc?

musicals, rock songs, and movies are bonuses, defined in GameInfo/CIV4BonusInfos.xml (there is not a changed bts version of this, look in the vanilla assets directory)

You can find most of the info your looking for at Civ4Wiki - XML Files
specifically, FreeBonus and iNumFreeBonuses in Civ4BuildingInfos.xml. If you get stuck just ask ;)

As for a different name for each, staying strictly in XML the only thing I can think of is to reiterate through buildings, each providing a different bonus. Make a new bonus with the same stats and graphic for each name you want. So you would create:
Wonder: free bonus A, free building M
Building M: free bonus B, free building N
Building N: free bonus C, free building O
etc...

Thanks very much, i'll have a look at it today! I've already made a "wonder video" for it, using 3dsmax and two video editing programs (it's looking very smart at the moment).

Will keep you posted!

I've added a link and image to the first post so you can see the wonder video i probably intend to use for the mod. Enjoy, and let me know!

:)

Progress so far:

As you can see by the pictures, i'm still modifying the design of the BBC HQ :)

Probably should call it something else, though, unless you're making this for a specific scenario in which the "British" civ has already constructed it.

I would also suggest removing the free broadcast tower idea -- that one's redundant with the Eiffel Tower.

I liked your idea of offering the TV shows....maybe consider making it similar to Hollywood/Broadway, in which it gives +50% culture to the city + offering instances of TV shows (which can then be traded) as a luxury. Thus it offers something new without making it more attractive than, for instance, other wonders of the same era of comparable price.

The graphics look nice.

Agreed.

Unless you remove that bonus for the Eiffel Tower which seems silly anyway and replace it with something else.

Then wouldn't it just become a generic broadcast company? The whole point of it was because the BBC is the largest broadcaster in the world. I mean, the French have the Eiffel tower, the Americans the statue of liberty. Albeit they don't have the prefix-"French" or "American", they are undoubtedly connected with these places when you build them.

Only difference being that the worlds largest Broadcast Corporation is a little bit more deserving of a free broadcast tower, than the Eiffel tower. Either way, I don't think it's that much of a concern. :)

Perhaps, i'm still reviewing the bonus' the BBC will bring to the nation.

Thanks :)

Yes, but that makes all the difference in my mind. The distinguishing characteristic of the BBC is not that it's a global broadcasting corporation (there are many) but that (a) it was really the first such network, and (b) it is British. If the Statue of Liberty were built in another civilization, it could (theoretically) still be called the Statue of Liberty.... The BBC really couldn't. Purely an aesthetic objection, of course, but it seems odd for the Zulus or the Germans to build the British Broadcasting Corporation. Maybe if you named it "Empire" or "Imperial" Broadcasting Corporation you'd still give a wink and nod to the heritage of the BBC....

Perhaps, but then you'd have to give another effect to the Eiffel Tower (or remove it from the game altogether) for gameplay purposes, otherwise it's redundant to have two contemporaneous wonders giving identical effects. (But if you were going to do this, then I would suggest getting rid of the tradeable tv shows.)

As another suggestion, while it might be cool to rename every instance of the tv show luxury, I think that's a little over the top. It's enough to call them "Television Shows" and let it go at that.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what direction you choose to go with this.

I do understand with what you're saying, don't get me wrong. I do appreciate your feedback on this one. If the BBC had been called "NBC" (National Broadcast Corporation), then there wouldn't be an issue (?), but the problem is, that it's called the "BBC".

Rather than make up a wonder (?! has a ny wonder been made up?), id rather go for what the mod set out to do and that was to build the BBC. Perhaps look upon it as the "Zulu Broadcast Corporation" or "Germany Broadcast Corporation" when it's built, rather than viewing it as only belonging in Britain because of the corporation's name.

Again, that would result i me having to do the wonder movie all over again and making it generic. While their are of course other global broadcast corporations/companies. The BBC is by far the largest, which is a prequisite in itself to being called a wonder, just like the hanging gardens or the Eiffel Tower. If it became Generic, there wouldn't be a valid reason for it to become a wonder.

I wouldn't consider "Fox News" being a world wonder, even without a prefix like "American" :)

So BBC, remains. But maybe in the future, i'll mod a more generic mod like this.

This I might actually change, yeah. :)

To be honest, ithink it's turning into a bit of an XML nightmare to justsimply have the resources named like "BBC News", "BBC World", "BBC Entertainment" etc...

It's likely I'll just go for "Television Shows" or "BBC Channel". :D

I've rescaled and re-edited the model of the BBC HQ and made it more prominent/dominant in the city it's built in. I'm pretty happy with it currently.

The only things left to do now are:

1) The "TV channels" resource
2) Revising the bonuses and effects the BBC bring to the nation that builds it.

I wouldn't consider "Fox News" being a world wonder, even without a prefix like "American" :)

Well, let's hope your coding skills aren't as weak as your sense of humor....

Alright, I was thinking that, instead of giving a free broadcast tower in every city, what if the BBC gave an increase to culture (say 30%?) to cities that have built a broadcast tower?

Is that possible?

I'm having a bit of trouble getting the channel resource to work (problem with the XML), will keep people posted.

Hey, actually, I had a random idea about this mod while I was eating breakfast this morning....

What if, instead of making this a World Wonder, this was a corporation instead? After all, it is the British Broadcasting Corporation....

It could convert movies, radio shows, and plays into extra culture and science (to represent the free exchange of ideas facilitated by a global broadcasting network). Establishing a new branch would represent a new radio station adding BBC programming in that city...

EDIT: Actually, instead of science, perhaps make it generate culture and Espionage points (news reporters on the scene reporting information about events at home and abroad?) That way it does something that the other corporations don't. You could also make the prerequisite Great Person a Great Spy, too.

I'd hate to lose the work you did on the wonder movie...but perhaps there's a way to trigger the wonder movie on construction of the corporation, anyway?

Why not a wonder and a corporation? Building it founds the 'broadcasting company' corporation, and gives you some 'tv series' luxuries. the broadcasting corp could turn broadway, hollywood and bbc 'shows' into commerce.

:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

How did you do this movie? :wow:
Real great work :goodjob: Real great idea and even better quality of movie. If oyu need still any help with adding this contact me at yahoo messenger - asiox3@yahoo.com

I would really like to see this wonder in game :)

The wonder movie is amazing. It's by far the best fan made wonder movie. My only negative thing is, it to short :D I like the begining with augustus and the willem. I think you should make this part longer, or maybe add an other part with an other leaders talking. But anyways, it's really wonderfull :D Great job ! :goodjob:

The BBC should be the choice because of the World Service which people all around the world listen too and in many countries such as the middle-east and Africa is the only source of impartiality.

The BBC is the best broadcasting choice, not just because it is the only one with a charter guarteeing impartiallity, but because it is the only one which provides reporting to all the worlds people in their own language.

If your looking for a bonus it could give how about a 1+ relations with all other civs, you could just take the XML from the leader traits MODS other people have made.

Any update? :(

I love the BBC. My favorite show 'ever' is Time Team. Unfortunately, I can't get it anymore here in the states. I wish it would come out on DVD.
