No warships?

Why can't I build any warships in Hadrumetum? It's next to a big inland lake, but it counts as an ocean, and I've already built a workboat, lighthouse, cothon and even the Colussus in the city. I've also built another city, Leptis, to act as a channel and it can build tiremes and galleys. But for some strange reason Hadrumetum can't.

Is it a bug, or is there a logical explanation to this?

Did BTS change the requirements for ship building in cities after the 'pond battleship' syndrome?

Now i am sure i found the same issue myself when i was playing a few games ago. I think it ended up being an over sized fresh water lake and it wouldn't let me build ships there. I think it was to to with no sea access. I'll admit i'm guessing but if you mouse over the tiles in the middle is it showing as ocean or fresh water lake? If it's lake it'd explain it.

It's not a lake. All the tiles are coast. And I can build all the "ocean"-buildings AND workboats. But not tiremes and galleys.

I think it's to prevent the AI from massing ships in a pond.
Thats my guess.

You may want to post a save game of this. I don't know what may be the cause of it but maybe someone can examine the save game and see why.

@ Jedic

I opened your save and confirmed that you can't build warships in Hadrumetum but you can build work boats...but I whipped a Trireme in Leptis and sailed it into the inland ocean adjacent to Hadrumetum. I would suggest starting another thread in the BtS Bug forum (a subforum of the BtS forum) for this.

he should be able to build ships in that Hadrumetum city... I've seen the AI build caravals next to a 1-tile lake just stuck in that tile. Looks like besides Blue Marble, he has another mod of some type running and I bet that is the culprit

its no bug - the game is set to require at least 20 water tiles for triremes, galleys and the like while it only requires 10 water tiles for lighthouses and harbors. Workboats are weird, you can build them whenever they could reach a resource (if you have a lake with one tile and a fish you should be able to build it)...

You are right. I went into the worldbuilder and removed the clams. Then I couldn't build workboats anymore. Then I added 6 more water tiles and tiremes and galleys appeared in the build window. So it's a game feature, although a strange one.

Damn there goes my plan for a heroic epic city for both land and sea units. :(

Thanks for this info!

I agree i am sure this is an intended feature to prevent the 10 AI battleship syndrome in a "pond" to kill no one but themselves.

I'm sure they could have (and can still) write code to re-check accessability whenever a fort is built or city settle and either are destroyed. Indeed, allow humans to build ships whenever and restrict that rule to AI decision making...
