I started this a while back, and just finished it.

I am aiming to get back into the unit making business, kind of fell away there for a bit.

Anyways, Modeled in Gmax (3ds Max cut down for game content creators and it will unfortunately not use the Civ 4 Nif scripts so no new animations. :( )

It s UV mapped in Blender though, as Gmax's UV mapping is very had..

This uses the Transports animations.

Splendid job as usual.:goodjob:
Anyway thank you for this unit. They would say that you are the only one to make modern units at present and we need it a lot. :(
In fact, be able you to say to us what will be your future creations please?
Thank you for everything.:king:

P.S: I just have a question on your model. On the photographs of the "san-antonio class" which I saw on Internet, there are two big cones on the boat. On your not, it is wanted? I add that I, I like your unit as she am.

This is supposed to be it. ;)

S300
Patriot
Camanche
Puma
CSS Hunley for Shiggs713
The Royal Van Doos (Canadian Infantry a la WWI)
A Hydrofoil
Iowa Class (Both the Original and Revamped).
Firefox
A modern type frigate
Wasp landing craft
Graf Zeppelin

The problem was that some had it and some did not. I thought she looked better without. ;)

Matt... you may think she looks better without the cones, but in reality... in the real world... they are definately there...

I wonder... could you in Civ4 make this thing carry both regular troops (tanks, inf, etc) AND Helicopter Gunships? How would you work the XML to do that?

Erm, the game already works this way. Gunships, tanks and infantry can be transported by the transport class.
What the game cannot do (without modification) is to carry land units and air units on the same class.

Not animated you say? So the model won't "wobble" on the waves when linked to the transport animations? Schade...

Well, there you go... shows how little I know.

By the time I have invented Gunships, I already have airports all over the place and if I want a gunship transported overseas, it's simply much-quicker to airlift a gunship (and any other ground unit) then it is to transport it by sea.

Frankly, all my transports become floating museums not long after the invention of flight. I build a lot of airports and just airlift what I need to other continents... the only time(s) I need transports to do trans-oceanic missions is if I'm invading a new continent for the first time after flight... which is pretty rare for me at that stage of the game.

As cool as this unit looks, I'm not sure what to do with it... by the time I would upgrade a transport to this unit, I wouldn't have a practical use for it!

I posted three images where they are not there so I wasn't sure if they just didn't put them on for some reason..

This one should sure. It is just that I cannot create any new animations, like for the s-300 MaxRiga requested..

Thanks, specially coming from you! :)

Yeah, I will never stop per se, but I kind of got caught up in another game. :p Happens to me frequently..

Well, all three you posted were sketches, and none were the real-thing as completed.

The San Antonio class is relatively new, so it's not surprising some sketches are going to get it wrong... I think you're too young to remember, but back in the 80s, the "F-19 Stealth Fighter" had all kinds of sketches and models made of it... and the F-19 Stealth (and the look that was "assumed") never was reality... the F-117 had a differant number and a differant look when it was revealed.

Same thiing (sorta) with the San Antonio class... the reality of how it is completed today, is differant then those sketches you went by... which is why I showed an actual photo of the real thing as opposed to a line-sketch... but line sketches do exist of the correct look.

Not a biggie... just saying there is a differance between what you went off of and what was the finished product. I doubt I'll even use this model (but it does look nice Matt!).

Ahh, ok I understand now, I did not realize that it was a new thing and so there would be actually prebuilt stuff out there. :p

So I guess a new version is in the works..

As for its use.

It was a request so don't look at me. :p But it makes maybe a tad more sense than the one there now, but then the Liberty one makes that much more.
So maybe to make them viable these things should carry a tone (8 units maybe?) and move just slightly slower than the guided missile cruisers, but who knows. :P

Don't sweat it... Heck, I don't have much use for navies once aircraft are around anyways.

The default "transport" in Civ4 does suck, so if someone wants to swap-out the Higgins boat for this, it's an upgrade... though truth be told, jumping from a Galleon to a San Antonio transport would be a huge leap!

I do prefer replacing the default Higgins boat with a Liberty Class transport... makes a lot more sense... and the San Antonio could be a modern-day replacement for the Liberty class... though what stats you'd give it, I don't know. I also snuck-in that Paddle Steamer inbetween "Galleon" and "Transport" for good measure in my own mod.

Keep up the good work Matt.

That's where the era-switching of graphics can help. For instance I plan to use this San Antonio model to be used as a modern era transport, while the Liberty could be the first (industrial era) incarnation of this unit class.

If only I could find the xml file which determines what graphic accompanies an attack cityraider unit (like a swordsman with a siege tower), so the higgins boat could be used as an extra graphic when units with the marine capability attack from their transport. :(

It's sooooooooooooooooooooo badly needed actually. Even when flight is discoverd (and airlift is possible) sea transportation is absolutely needed. Some times, you have to start a war instantly.

Transporting units using airports takes a looooong time. Plus, amphibious operations are so fun. I like catching my enemy in sleep. Bye, bye city!

Anyway, Matt, I like your unit much and thank you for making it. Please, add those two cones. I believe she will look much more realistic and, oh well, beautiful. The major work is done now, make it as an additional option for the unit, not a replacement.

I would really like to hear from you soon on this. Keep up the good work. Expecting the new units you hve planned as well.

I actually added them I believe but got caught up in other stuff, I will try to get the fix out soon. :)

I'm only 24, and even I remember that. Of course, my perspective was slightly different then, as the "sketches" I saw were in fact toys and micro-machines that I played with.
