Combined Arms Stack Attack for Beyond the Sword 3.13!

Sick of Civ4's one-on-one combat and pseudo-one-on-one stacked combat? Ever wanted TRUE combined arms interaction between your units? Dale's famous CASA Mod comes to BtS!

Instructions:
1. Download the mod. http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=8019
2. Unzip to your Mods folder: ..\Sid Meiers Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\
3. Launch BtS and switch to mod StackAttack.
4. Play as you normally would.

Information:

The CASA Mod is the core of Dale's Combat Mods. Born during development of vanilla Civ4 after a discussion between the Firaxis designers and some of the alpha testers. The challenge was to create a stack-attack method similar to Call to Power's combat methods. Unfortunately due to some issues with animations it was unable to be made bug-free. But with BtS that all changes!

Concepts in CASA:

Combined Arms Stack Attack:
This concept is where all units in a stack will work together to defeat all units in an opposing stack. This means your grunts will line up with arrow/siege covering fire and flank attacks can occur with your mobile forces. Air units will fly cover missions during the battle as well.

Opportunity Fire:
This concept is where your fortified/stationary siege units gain an opportunity to fire for free whenever an enemy unit moves within range (one tile away).

Active Fighter Defense:
This concept is where any patrolling fighters will defend the plot/units with them. Patrolling fighters on carriers will scramble and air-strike during naval battles, and fighters will defend their city bases against land attacks. Patrolling fighters also gain opportunity fire on enemy units within 2 plots of them.

More will be added to this mod, so stay tuned for more combined arms concepts in this one. :)

So uh, Dale, do you officially work for Firaxis yet? :D

This is really cool and I'm excited about the new concepts you're speaking of adding.

I wasn't really crazy about the original stacked combat mod because of the bugs, but now that I hear that this has been taken care of in BtS, I'll definitely have to give this thing another look! :goodjob:

It's been so long since I saw an update to CASA, I feared you'd abandoned it!

I'm truly looking forward to this.

I want it now.

First beta release is out!

See first post for details.

- Opportunity fire running
- Active defense running
- Graphical concept of stack attack running
- True combined arms stack attack NOT running

So when you say all units work together...well, how exactly does this work? Will a stack be totally destroyed in one turn if it is defeated?

(Sorry if I'm asking a question that is obvious to the veterans...this is the first time I've started paying attention to the stack attack mod and some of Dale's other work, and want to understand it a little better.)

No, an entire stack will not be totally destroyed in one turn (like older versions of Civ ;) ).

As it works in this version, it's still one-on-one combat just the whole stack does it all at the same time (instead of one after another). I'm still fine-tuning the real combined arms code.

As it will work in the next version, the process will be thus:
1. Air units dog-fight, then any un-engaged air units airstrike enemy stack.
2. Bombarding units perform collatoral combat on enemy stack (no normal combat though).
3. Archers perform collatoral combat on enemy stack (no normal combat though).
4. Hand-to-hand units line up and go the biffo against each other.

That's in simple terms, there's a lot more rules with it though. ;)

So I'm assuming that the dog-fighting air units will do damage to each other though even if the ground combat is still one on one, yes?

P.S: Go the biffo?

Yes, dog-fighting air units will do damage to each other.

How many times during an opponent's turn can a siege or air unit use opportunity fire?

Processed once a turn, but Opp Fire is available on any unit in range.

What does Beta mean?

Means its still being worked on. I need some folks to test what's done to make sure there's no bugs. The next bit I do relies in the parts in this beta being bug-free. :)
