Make sure you’re good scientists, not mad scientists, so someday you don’t destroy the world.
-My Chemistry Teacher

Welcome to SteamNES!

This is your chance to weave your own threads into the tapestry of a world- a world much like ours. The medieval world is fading away, being replaced by the world of science and technology. Great nations are spread across the world. However, power is not in their hands. It is in the hands of a very few. People who have an unnatural mastery of technology. The ability to engineer elabourate mechanisms, minds made up of naught but gears and clockwork. The imagination to create something beyond the wildest dreams of others, the skill to build it. These people are known as many things. The ‘Gifted’. ‘Sparks’. ‘Insane’. Some believe these gifts to be divine gifts- others, the direst curses. No one can understand how the Gift works. Even if a Spark explains how something is done, even if those instructions are followed to the tiniest detail, none can match their creations. Now, as a new age of humanity arises, follow your dreams. Build a mountaintop fortress to continue your studies in peace defended by fiendish traps and mechanical goons, explore the world by zeppelin and flier, carve out a small kingdom of your own, or seek to take the world in a storm of steam and technology!

Rules

This is a Story NES. There are still stats, simple, descriptive ones. However, the meat of this NES is in stories. You play as individuals (and their followers, in some cases), rather than nations. You can do, within reason, whatever you want.

These will act through stories, short and simple or long, descriptive and elabourate, whatever you want! I will make short, quick updates saying what happens, and update the map to show cities, borders, bases, and what have you. Orders are not necessary, though if you insist on sending them, they’re allowed.

Gradually, you can build up technology and forces, to be used basically however you want.

I will update with a short writeup and a new map.

All people are welcome to join! I don't need huge stories, even short little blurbs on what's going on will do if you're short on time.

Long stories, of course, are greatly appreciated. :D

Halls of the Gifted

Doctor Isaac Hayden, Mg.D
(1644 to 1686, by the Northern Calendar, -40 to 2 by the Spark Calendar)
This Vestlundic Spark, of some noble descent, always showed an aptitude for theoretical science. After completing a prestigious degree, he lived a fairly nondescript life as a professor at the Royal College of Vestlund. This all changed in 1679, when his Gift (at the time, a nigh-unknown phenomenon) manifested. His behaviour became more erratic than normal, but rapidly developed a field known to this day as 'Aniotic Physics'. Using this, he went on to create the S3 (Super Solenoid System) drive, the most powerful engine yet developed, as well as several other unrelated inventions for the military. The S3 would prove to be his destruction. During the testing of the second version of the S3, the exotic engine exploded, annihilating itself, Hayden, and all of the crew aboard the RVS Grenadier.

His death was a harsh blow to the scientific community, for not only were many developments in Aniotic theory and S3 creation lost with him, so was the opportunity provided in all of his future inventions. He is survived by one prototype S3 unit, and his myriad small inventions for the Vestlundic Military.

Father Leonardo
(1410 to 1457, by the European Calendar, -54 to 3 by the Spark Calendar)
Leonardo grew up as an impoverished peasant in the Espanic countryside until a spiritual awakening compelled him to begin a life of religion. For the first half-century of his life, he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the High Priest of Espan. He was always interested in the rationalist ideal of mixing science with religion, often studying with the greatest minds of the time. However, over time, his personal beliefs shifted from pious to fanatical. He began committing terrible crimes against those outside the Church, operating on their minds and bodies to 'convert' them. Upon the discovery of his actions, the reaction was so negative that even the fervent nation of Espan turned against him. Exiled, Leonardo left with only a cart, some supplies, and his first 'conversion', a young boy named Raul. Traveling to Sitala to practice his machine/human hybridizations on the local Yuwish population, he then traveled to Rabiyya beginning a reign of terror that would last for a third of a decade. Killing and 'converting' hundreds of locals, he wreaked havoc in the northwest of the country. His crusade was finally brought to an end when he was attacked by the assassin Malik al-Safwani, then a large Rabiyyan party hunting him. Escaping thanks to the work of his 'Crusader' walking armour and Raul's bravery, he traveled back northwards. However, once the group had escaped to safety, a part of Raul's long-damaged mind returned to consciousness. Raul realised that he had been lied to for years- Leonardo hadn't found him alone and mortally wounded. Raul had been brutally mangled by Leonardo, and his parents murdered. Furiously, Raul turned on his 'Father', decapitating him and breaking his body, leaving it to be consumed by the scavenging beasts of the mountains.

Leonardo had few relations with other Sparks, only once having a violent encounter with Doctor Leopold Vermeulen, and another time being sought out by Peter Williams, at the time seeking allies for his fight in the Anglian Civil War.

Peter Williams
(1418 to 1457, by the European Calendar, -46 to 3 by the Spark Calendar)
Born into a well-off but title-less family, Peter Williams had always been both a skilled engineer and a shrewd businessman. He founded the first commercial rail line in history, in Anglia. Building up a transportation monopoly, he rapidly became one of the most powerful and wealthy men in the country. As many have noted, power corrupts, and absolute power... oh come on, you know how it goes. Actions by the government and the upstart Spark Ryan Amedeus to create airships to circumvent the monopoly resulted in Williams' sabotage of the Amedean airship, resulting in huge bad press for the government. The political turmoil was only exacerbated by Williams assassinating Prime Minister Winston Brown, and pulling several strings to get a puppet government elected. Those who realised the manipulation turned against the 'New Government', triggering the Anglian Civil War. Williams' Steam Destroyers and Steamhulks aided the New Government, but his forces were not sufficient to overcome the huge antagonism that had built up against him. He fled the country for Rabiyya, searching for an ally in Father Lonardo during the midst of the civil war, only returning to command the final stages of the war. A final offensive was sent against Simon MacTavish' communists based around Oxford, who were supported by the Sparks Ryan Amedeus and Katherine Aylor. In the Battle of Oxford, Field Marshall Gaig nearly managed to defeat the rebels, only to then be flanked by forces from Lord Gabriel Blacktyde and Cid Hibiki. With the New Government's army crushed, Peter Williams fled via airship for a second time, only to be intercepted and shot down by one Cid Hibiki's Griffon Airships. Crashing into the Channel, the wealthy industrialist's body was not found until it washed up on the coastline near Caen, in Gallia. Being shipped back to Anglia, the Williams family managed to bury their son in the family cemetary without raising too much attention.

Peter Williams, for all else that may be thought of him, was the prime innovator and master of practically-applied Steam Technology in his time.

Characters

Doctor Akira Light/flyingchicken
Colour: Teal
Nationality: Nihojon
Bio: Akira was born into a culturally confused border-town lost and regained long by Nihojon to Rossovy now under Lord Yamamoto Ichiro. There was a local tendency towards imitating northern Rossovy's forward-moving mentality, partly because of the aforementioned neighbor and the ambitions of Lord Yamamoto, and he adopted it since childhood.

He lived a normal, healthy life for the most, learning as an apprentice when he was young and working as a small-time factory wage-earner as a young adult. He had quite a few close friends, and quite a few tragic romances. During his free time, ever since he was young, he would draw or sketch up crazy plans or constructed a few of those crazy and pointless chain-event contraptions (OTL Goldberg machines), usually for self-entertainement.

However, Akira always wanted it "one step up." Why make a small, page-by-page printing machine if you can make one that makes a hundred copies of a book per second, automatically? In fact, his first big break was his "fast book-printer" he invented when he was 24, something which greatly stimulated the town's industry and really pleased Lord Yamamoto.

As he grew older (and richer) he had forged a close relationship with the aging Yamamoto and his son, Seichiro. The young boy was apprenticed to him and the father was a political ally. The lord and the inventor had a shared belief that machines would someday change Nihojon forever.

Now, at the age of 37, he is advisor to the ambitious Lord Seichiro Yamamoto. He has been assigned a sacred duty by his friend and lord: to bring the region to the modern era so that the whole of Nihojon would rise from a backwater society to a true imperial power.

Nationality: Vestlundic currently living in Vilnius
Bio: Born into a well-to-do noble family of Vestlund, he was brought up by many tutors and harsh parents. When he was age 17, he met a girl named Johanna Eichels and fell in love. However, his parents were adamant in forbidding their marriage and even attempted to kill her by employing a professional. Incidentally, Edward was there to kill the assassin instead, and he ran away with Johanna to Rossovy, a country so large where they would go unnoticed.
Technology: Generic
Forces: 1 Steamboat

Felix Augustus/Bestshot9
Colour: Dark Green
Nationality: Rabiyyat
Bio: Felix, unlike what his name implies, was not really all that lucky. As a young man, he was a rising star at his university in southern Rabiyya, studying to become a doctor, as well as dabbling in invention. However, on one fateful day during the spring of his fourth year at the university, while on a nature hike with some friends, he slipped off the path and tumbled down the cliff side, breaking his back, and paralyzing himself from the waist down. A few weeks later, both of his parents died in a house fire.

Now alone in life, he shunned himself from society and his friends. He dropped out of school, and took his inheritance with him to live off in solitude. He built himself a house along the southern coast of Rabiyya, more than a days ride on horseback from the nearest city or town, where he started up his new lab, away from prying eyes. He built himself a mechanical chair, that he could ride around in to try and make up for his handicap.

Frederick Williams/e350tb
Colour: Dark Slate Grey
Nationality: Anglian
Bio: The younger brother of Peter Williams (who also had a spark), who sought a career in the military. He was Captain of the 621st Cambridge Regiment when he defected, realizing his brother was insane. When Peter died attempting an escape, Frederick gained his inheritance. He hopes to continue the Williams legacy, but first he needs to broker a peace in Anglica...

Lord Gabriel Blacktyde/Cleric
Color: Blacker than the blackest black. Times infinity. (It's the city that has a ring of darkness around it in southern Anglia)
Nationality: Anglian
Bio: Gabriel inherited his lordly title from his father Thomas Blacktyde. His father instilled in him a deep feeling of arrogance and superiority over the common folk, helped perhaps by the gift he passed down to him. The Spark as the peasants would call it. Blacktyde family made it's fortune from mostly naval ventures, various expeditions as well as owning a trading dock and a drydock, which the royal family used many times to order capital ships of superior construction and power. Gabriel visits the drydock often to personally oversee the construction of a new kind of ship, one that is thought to revolutionize naval travel and of course warfare.

The Lords current place of residence is a large mansion of an unusual mechanical architectural design in the countryside, surrounded by three very rural villages. Rumor has it that Gabriel uses the remoteness of the place to preform various gruesome experiments. Indeed, cows and sheep have been found mutilated in the fields, notably with their brains missing. Not to mention just recently a group of children were found dead not far from the mansion, their bodies charred and burned...as if they were exposed to some kind of steam. Only clues are two large footprints, made by something very heavy. The footprints lead back to the mansion, but the peasants dare not to accuse him in fear of incurring his wrath.

Gregore Angarine/al-Shamdli/das
Colour: Gold
Nationality: Gallo-Rossovyan, residing in Khur
Bio: A son of a Rossovyan diplomat and a Gallian countess, Gregore grew up in Lutece and, despite the faltering and uncertain fortunes of his family, received an elite education and generally showed himself to be a very capable young man, though somewhat cynical and detached; during this time he also discovered the gift of a Spark in himself, but decided not to call any attention to it and largely neglected it until more recent times. After graduating from the Academie Gallaise and separating himself from his family, he drifted without purpose and often in dubious company. Ultimately, suffering from boredom and ennui, he decided to travel around Europe, but failed to settle down anywhere and growing all the more desperate in his search for a purpose. Having squandered what money he had, Gregore tried to work as an inventor, but, due to the error-prone or intentionally harmful nature of many of his inventions, was expelled from one Alleman town after another Pjolakan village. After nearly dying at the hands of an angry mob, Gregore decided to turn his life around and, breaking off what little acquiantances he still had, secretly fled to the southeastern lands, where he disappeared for months. Very recently he reemerged under a pseudonym at the court of the Shah of Khur, first as an entertainer and then, having impressed the Shah with his more sophisticated inventions and general erudition, as a trusted advisor.
Technology: Robotics
Forces: 1 Mechanical Man ("Mamluk"), 52 Janissaries (Khurian Combat Robots), 49 Bombardiers (Walking Bombs)

Jeremy Sieko/Fuschia
Colour: Light Brown
Nationality: Durian, residing in Khur
Bio: Although obviously of Durian ancestry, he was raised in the southern-most of the Southeastern states as the adopted son of a famous clockmaker, also named Jeremy.

Jeremy's two natural sons showed an aptitude for making clocks; Jeremy did not. He worked hard, but showed little promise. His clocks were shoddy, always resigned to the scrap-heap when finished. His father continued to allow him to work in the hopes that he might one day learn to become a great clock maker.

Eventually, Jeremy's natural sons left him to establish their own businesses. Jeremy, almost ten years their younger, stayed with his adopted father. Jeremy became obsessed with learning the art of clock making so as to impress his father.

He developed designs for magnetic ball-bearings to replace gears, as this is where is real ineptness lay. He built his clock, and his father helped him to establish his own business, which quickly boomed when he advertised his new "tick-less" clocks.

His obsession ended after his success with clocks, although his greatest passion is still the production of small, mechanical things. Recently, he developed a man-sized flying machine that is capable of flying itself. He calls it the dragonfly, an insect which it closely resembles.

Technology: Heavier-than-Air Flight. Notable for the use of magnetic ball bearings in place of gears.
Forces: 3 Dragonflies, 2 Dragonfly Mark IIs, 17 Cirrus (rotary-fliers)

Julius Magnus/The Strategos
Colour: Purple
Nationality: Magnataean
Bio: Descended from the ancient Magnus family. Though their name is still as distinguished and revered as ever, recent hardships and mismanagements had caused the Magnus family to lose much of its wealth. In order to reverse the family fortunes, Julius has made it his goal to discover the means to create the mythical Philosopher’s Stone, which, according to myths, is able to turn base elements into gold and even give immortality.

Katherine "Kate" Marie Aylor/tuxedohamm
Colour: Cyan
Nationality: Anglian
Bio: Kate grew up in a small village on the edge of Anglia, but not quite in Scotia. Her childhood had been normal until her parents sent her off with a Mr. Locke that they said was her uncle. He provided her a nicer life than would have been expected from her village. She secretly attended a men’s college for a couple years before being discovered. She left there and with funds provided to her, traveled around discovering things on her own and adapting her discovered ability to personal uses.
Technology: Generic
Forces: 1 Mechanical Man (Marcus), 4 Airships (The original being the Spirit of Ashleigh, constructed partly from a Salvaged Train)

Lee Garçon
Colour: Green
Nationality: Gallien
Bio: Living on the streets around the capital of Gallia, he was a young boy eternally it seemed. Knowing no parents or authority, he grew up in anonymity, tagging along with the gangs of youth that roamed the underbelly of the most beautiful city in the world. He was only called "Boy" or in third person "The Boy". He took this dismissive and derisive term and adopted it as his name, and Le Garçon turned into Lee Garçon. Around age 12(He estimated that to be his age), he noticed he had a propensity for science and technology. He could build gadgets and arms out almost nothing. Steam power drew him inexplicably. His meteoric rise was driven by his skill, and Lee became a Troupe leader, living like a King in his underworld tenement palace. Roi des Gosses, Empereur des orphelins, Règle des Rues, that is what they called him. With no regard for the politeness and honor of his aristocratic brethern he protected his own, and destroy his enemies.

Forces: Boilerplate (A flying mechanical man), Robert (A fast, unwieldy and spiked armoured carriage), 1 Steam Flier

Nathanial "Nate" Allendore/KrimzonStriker
Color: Amber
Nationality: Angilan, Currently Residing in Vestlund
Bio: A refugee from the turmoil of the Angilan power struggles, Nate had always been told to hide his special abilities since he was 11 years old (-1 on the Spark Calendar), instead learning secretly under private tutors and books that his middle-class family could provide. While certainly bright he grew up as a normal and happy child, until the war had suddenly taken his family and forced him along with other refugees across the border into the Vestlund holding in the north of the island. The trauma he has endured hardened him to the realities of the world, and have made him determined to use his gifts to prevent the tragedy of his life from ever occurring again. At sixteen he has made himself a resident of Vestlund's proper for about six-months now, and has taken an interest in Vestlund's late Doctor Isaac Hayden's work on Aniotic Physics, seeking to exploit it for practical purposes. He holds extreme admiration for Ryan Amedeus and Katherine Marie Aylor, as individuals who defy and work to overcome the injustice that has plagued their homeland and seeks to gain contact with them, but lacking confidence in his ability to contribute to the fight until he manages to make some headway in his new research.

Bio: Exiled from the Rossovyan court due to an undisclosed incident. Nikolai has been sent away from the captiol until he can prove his worth to his Czar, from whom he has already received a generous amount of funding. Nikolai is certainly one of the 'gifted', though he is less gifted when it comes to romance. This doesn't stop him chasing women all the time, and spending many evenings in local drinking dens, drinking imported ales from Svearlund and Medland. Nikolai dreams of venturing above the clouds and even higher, to reach the stars themselves.

So his parents bought him books and toys for him to break apart and put back together, when he was a teen he created a robot version of himself and gave it some clothes. Soon the parents turned up in pieces and the entire Family fortune entered Octavians hands. The debate still rages as to whether or not Octavian's robot killed the family or not. But he is still respected among his peers as the world's greatest scientist at 16, and many recognize him as the king of Pjolaka, at age 18.

Nations

Magnatae is the last remnant of a Rome-like Empire which once ruled the areas that are now Anglia, Lusigal, Espan, Gallia and western Rabiyya. Its empire fell apart almost a millennium ago, but the Emperors of Magnatae managed to maintain control of the island they reside in today. The modern nation is an interesting mix. There are decadent rulers and a bureaucrats, but many philosophers and scientists as well. There is a middle class, and many poor. There is still virility left in the Magnataeans, even if it is smothered by its ancient and archaic government.

Rabiyya is a powerful theocratic nation. Its warriors have many times sparred with the nations of the north, at some points nearly overrunning Espan and Sitala. Its religion ranges from its westernmost ports to the lands of the southeast.

Turqui is a nation descended from nomads which fought the proto-Rossovayan states centuries ago. They are a rather militarist, and few of their neighbours have not been at war with them at some point, particularly their age-old rivals in Rossovy. At the moment, they are occupied by Pjolaka, Khur, Rabiyya and Rossovy, and the Sultan is in Exile.

Khur (currently under the leadership of Abbas Shah), is a rapidly-growing nation in the southeast. It has recently subjugated Duria and Mavadi.

The Southeastern States are a variety of small nations, similar in culture to Mavadi.

Lusigal is a Monarchy, and much of its population is strongly religious. However, there is a growing liberal element in the country.

Espan, led by King Carlos II, with demographics similar to Lusigal. However, the Espanic people are more militaristic and fervent than its Lusigese brothers.

Adona is a tiny monarchy nestled in the mountains between Gallia and Espan. It is a mix of the two cultures, and rather scenic.

Gallia, currently led by King Geoffrey I, is a powerful Monarchy, though it is growing increasingly bloated distanced from the population. It is, like many of its neighbours, strongly religious, though there is a large group of philosophers and scientists, many of whom week to change the long-standing status quo.

Sitala is an ancient centre of civilization, though today it is a mix of city states. The holy center for most people in the aforementioned nations is in the city of Magna, and the many city-states are centers of technological and cultural advancement. Sitala's great strength and weakness is largely based on its divisions. Struggle between the states prevents stagnation and accelerates development, but it also prevents Sitala from being a cohesive force for anything other than total emergencies.

Allemany is a patchwork of states, which are hugely varied. This nation is the heart of the Reform Church, a popular heresy which arose several centuries earlier and became firmly established in Anglia, Medland, Sumoark Svearlund and Vestlund. The state is filled with religious and economic conflict. However, it is prosperous despite (or perhaps because of) these difficulties. Allemany is one of the first states to begin industrialization. Should it ever unite, it would be a power feared throughout the world.

Medland is a relatively liberal, merchant nation. It has made many scientific breakthroughts, however, it is small and still lmore agricultural than industrial.
(Bellovan is a culture in the south of Medland, with many Gallic influences. It joined the union centuries earlier, but in recent years a movement for independence has begun to develop)

Kingdom of Anglia, currently led by King John X, is a small, aristocratic nation in Southern Anglia, which rallied around the forces of Gabriel Blacktyde during the civil war.

Oxfordian Anglia, led by Comrade Simon MacTavish, is a communist state controlling all of Anglia but the southeast.
(Scota is a culture in the north of Anglia, conquered but never fully assimilated)

Eiria is a culture in the Eastern Islands between Anglia and Europe. It has recently overthrown its Anglian overlords, and formed a small, republican nation.

Pjolaka, currently led by King Octavian I, is a moderately powerful nation, ruled by a weak King, who is essentially controlled by the various members of the nobility.

Rossovy, currently led by Czar Michael I, is a vast and powerful empire following the Eastern Church, an early breakaway from the Clergy in Magna. However, it has numerous internal problems. The nation is divided between the strong but backwards heartlands of the south, and the progressive, industrializing areas of the northwest, centered around Sankt Kyrillas.

Vestlund is a liberal nation with a powerful fleet. It is rich in natural resources, though it has been slow to industrialize. The King has a large amount of influence, however, the nation is still dominated by local nobility.

Svearlund is a rival Monarchy of Vestlund. It is united and economically stronger, however, it cannot match Vestlund's fleet in size or strength.

Suomark is a nation ethnically different from all of its neighbours. It has alternated between being dominated by Svearlund and Rossovy. However, the latest reshuffling of borders has left it independent.

Nihojon, currently under the leadership of Emperor Gensho, most significantly influenced by Lord Seichiro Yamamoto, is a powerful, somewhat decentralized monarchy. It is noted for its powerful warrior/nobility caste. The nation is somewhat backwards, though its martial prowess has been able to fight off superior technology in the past.

Singuo is a mighty, rich, bureaucratic monarchy. In the past, it has been a leader in technology, though more recently it has begun to fall behind the west.

Bod is a small, spiritual country nestled high in the mountains between the three major powers of the east. It is both defensible and rather poor land, which have allowed the nation to survive for many centuries.

Dr. Leopold Vermeulen/Luckymoose
Nationality: Bellovanian
Bio: Outcast from his former job teaching at the highly noted Academy of Mechanical Sciences in Medland, for increasingly unusual behavior. He is a supporter of the Free Bellovan movement in Medland and has set his life long goal to bringing his homeland to freedom through whatever means.

Forces: 1 Mechanical Man (BoilerPlate!)

Dr. Vermeulen, young, competent and to himself at least, attractive. Sitting now, exiled from his work back in his home country, forced to carry out experiments in this filthy place called Rabiyya. The mountains are no place for a genius of his caliber. As he ponders in his little steam powered spinny chair, occasionally spinning around with the pull of a lever, his mechanical assistant, Boilerplate, walks in with a tray with various nuts and a glass of wine.

"Um..where are the pistachios?" the doctor said kindly.

"Sir, there are no pistachios in this country. I looked myself." replied Boilerplate in a screechy steam kettley voice.

"What do you mean there are no pistachios? What type of heathen country has no pistachios? I have not gone a minute of pondering without the most wonderful nut in the world since I was born! Do you understand me?"

"I am sorry sir there is nothing I can do." said BP in his same old tone. In fact he had no other tone.

"I demand you make me some pistachios!"

"Sir..I cannot. I am not a magical being capable of spontaneously creating pistachios."

"Perhaps..you are right. You are worthless. I should have made a mechanical man capable of growing and roasting pistachios." said Dr. V.

"Then why don't you?" BP asked.

"Becau...hush, back to work the machines need to be completed. I hate falling behind and this lack of pistachios is not helping my cause."

Nikolai Dante / Daftpanzer
Nationality: Rossovyan, currently residing in (somewhere in the north-west peninsular by the sea?).
Bio: Exiled from the Rossovyan court due to an undisclosed incident. Nikolai has been sent away from the captiol until he can prove his worth to his (king? Czar?), from whom he has already received a generous amount of funding.
Technology: Generic
Forces: 1 self-moving armoured steam carriage

Nice stuff!

The northwest peninsular is a heavily-developed area right now, actually. If someone were to be exiled, it would be to the frozen, windswept mountains of the northern frontier.

I see what you mean, that makes sense. I changed my character's bio. I would really like to stay in that peninsular if that is OK :)

A loud bang is heard throughout the mountains, originating in a small cavern dug out for the purpose of housing machines and projects relating to the creation of them. The loud bang, it just so happens was one of these machines becoming a pile of scrap.

"Blast the damn physics of this universe!" screamed Leopold in a bit a rage. Covered in black soot, he coughs from the smoke and brushes his apron off. "Boiler, where are you?"

"I am here sir, beneath what remains of the smoke stack." BP replied.

"What am I doing wrong?" Leo asked himself. "I was sure this scale version of the cat would work. You were supposed to breath fire, and menace with spikes!" he looks at the pieces across the floor and kicks a small chunk of metal. "OUCH! My foot!"

"If I may interject, sir. I think the problem is trying to make something breathe fire and menace with spikes is dangerous to the operators of the machine. I do not see it wise to continue pursuing this cause." Boilerplate told him while moving around and picking up pieces of kitten robot.

"What do you mean? EVERYTHING MUST MENACE WITH SPIKE AND BREATHE FLAMES! It is the only way. I will figure it out. Oh I almost forgot, did you get any news about Medland when you went into the capital?"

"No sir the locals to do not get very much news from the north."

"Agh, this place is hell."

He scratches his now stubbly beard, he hadn't shaved in days.

"Hey Boiler, I think I should make an automatic shaving machine. What do you think?" he asked his robot assistant.

"I think it is most unwise, sir."

Name/Player High Inquisitor Leonardo/Nuclear kid
Nationality: Espanian
Bio: As a young boy, Leonardo was a young peasant boy with a care free life until one day he was trapped in a huge and terrible storm. He prayed to his god, and sure enough, his life was sparred. He rose through the ranks as a young monk, and was soon a high preist, only answerable to the King or Queen of Espan. He then became very intrested and science, and studied under the greatest teacher and mind of the kingdom, Profesor Reynoso, and was the second most intelligent man until Reynoso died under peculiar circumstances. He was at first more interested in his own spiritual development and sciences, but as he saw heathens all around him, he knew he must change them, so he set out to convert these heathens to the true religion. At first, he did it with kindness and compassion, but it was then discovered he was operating on some of the heathens who would not convert, so he was banned from his homeland. It's the whole world more or less. With a China and Japan clone in the east, Rabiyya is an Arab nation and so on. They all use standard das colors.

Kalim ibn Abd-al-Wahhab Al-Bayyati/LittleBoots

LittleBoots - I don't think the Forces are supposed to include your character, that seems to be more of a mechanical assistant.

Lord_Iggy - before I join, may it be assumed that the socio-political situation of the world is roughly equivalential to that of the OTL late 18th century (not 19th because of Poland and such)? i.e. is Allemany a patchwork of fractured states, is Gallia a decaying ancien regime monarchy, is Pjolaka a noble republic? Or are things significantly different?

Also, I assume that you would manage the states themselves. Or is it all merely up to our own writing? The former seems rather more interesting, though ofcourse sparks are likely to have some political influence if they're rare enough.

Thanks, das.

I'll think of something momentarily.

Basically, you write stories, short or long, about what your character does in the environment provided. It's in the description.

Excellent!

It would be useful if people described their forces (which are technically their very first major creation.

The sociopolitical situation is a bit of a mishmash. I'll explain.

They are a rather militarist nation, and few of their neighbours have not been at war with them at some point, particularly their age-old rivals in Rossovy.

Duria, Khur, Mavadi and the Southeastern States are a mishmash of cultures generally regarded as 'exotic' by the people of the west.

Lusigal is a Monarchy, and much of its population is strongly religious. However, there is a growing liberal element in the country.

Espan is a Monarchy, with demographics similar to Lusigal. However, the Espanic people are more militaristic and fervent than its Lusigese brothers.

Adona is a tiny monarchy nestled in the mountains between Gallia and Espan. It is a mix of the two cultures, and rather scenic.

Gallia is a powerful Monarchy, though it is growing increasingly bloated distanced from the population.

Anglia is a prosperous, liberal nation. It is noted for its unique elected parliament, and its naval technology.
(Scota is a culture in the north of Anglia, conquered but never fully assimilated. Eiria is a culture in the Eastern Islands, noted for refusing to follow the Reform Church, and its resistance (like its cousins in Scota) to Anglian assimilation.

Pjolaka is a nation which follows the Eastern Church, an early breakaway from the Clergy in Magna. They are a fairly prosperous nation, ruled by a single King, but with particularly strong noble influences.

Rossovy is a vast and powerful empire, however, it has numerous internal problems.

Nihojon is a powerful, somewhat decentralized monarchy. It is dominated by a relatively weak Emperor, and a powerful warrior/nobility caste.

I'll be managing the states, though they can be influenced by powerful Sparks.

By the way, if people could suggest a colour to represent their location on the map, it would be useful. :D

Well, that's politics and culture, but I'm not quite clear about society in the European countries. Presumably it does in general correspond to the 18th century, though.

Pjolaka is not quite what I expected... still, I have some other ideas as well, so it's no big deal.
