Well, I was hoping to join another SG game so I can get a little help getting started, but no luck. So, even though this will be my first SG game, I guess I am forced to captain one. Sorry guys.

Anyway, I've seen that the favored roster is five people, so that's what we'll do.

Roster:
IdiotsOpposite
Hackapell
S.ilver
Simon_c
open

Play will be on Noble (Hey, you gotta start small, right?... right??) with four Custom Continents and 7 AI opponents. We can decide our civilization and leader once we get some more people than one. Also, sorry if I make any mistakes, but you gotta remember, this is my first SG game! I'd join one, but there aren't any open ones!

Oh, version is Vanilla Civ.

So, I'd really like at least one experienced SGer to help me out.

Sure, why not.

Sign me up, Captain :salute:
Are we 1.74? If not, we have acsess to the overpowered Cossack and Redcoat, could go Cathy or Vicky. If so, should be more interesting.

I have experience at prince, but no further.

Not to hijack your thread here, but I am about to start my second SG, which will be Prince level again. We did very well on a pangea map, so this time we'll be doing hemispheres to force us to play with some naval power if we choose any kind of military route.

I would be happy to have you jump on board if that would make your life easier for an intro to SG's :)

Only thing of note is that we will be playing BtS version 3.13, using Bhuric's patch to the official patch :p If you are set on Vanilla, best of luck!

Sweet, we got one!

I'm using the version before 1.74, because when I updated to that version, my game started crashing, and I evantually had to run an entire reinstall, back to the old version.

Redcoat, I think, would be a preferred choice (I don't like anything on a horse as much as I like gunpowder units), but don't we still have two choices from there? We'll have to take a look at Lizzy and Vicky, and decide which one is best.

Me, personally, I REALLY love Spiritual civilizations, but I don't think either one is in this list.

Also, Trynth, I don't have BtS, so I need to use vanilla. Thanks, though!

EDIT: Well, I just checked out both of the leaders, and, frankly, I have mixed reactions. I just can't believe just how suited Vicky is to a naval map, but we are doing 4 continents here, so is that naval enough for her? Lizzy, on the other hand, is suited to the sea, but she's more suited to a GP factory... make that a whole nation full of GP factories. I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on this, so I'll let the other players decide by themselves.

EDIT2: I browsed around a bit more (hey, you can never be too prepared, right?) with our starting techs. Fishing and Mining? I don't see any route for my favorite start with that (a religion rush), but a good route might be Pottery-Sailing-Bronze Working-Iron Working. We could be the first civilization to discover Iron! Of course, any tech route is subject to change, once we see our resources, but what do you think of this one?

Hmmm.

I'm open to any suggestion, but I think I just upgraded to 1.74, So I'll go deinstall when I have the chance.

A Note on Lizzie; Financial takes priority over Philo. It's just an extra boost.

Without Carthage and the Vikings (both excellent seafaring civs available in warlords), there isn't a dominate naval civ.

If you want Spi/Fin(Fin is best for maps like this), Mansa Musa is the best. He has the fastest Axe-rush in the game,as he starts with mining and the wheel, and so can rush BW while crafting a worker to hook up the copper.

Personally, I never worry all that much about Religion, as I either rush to CoL for courthouses, or take my nearest rival's religion.

Maybe if you set some objective or pick 5 leaders you want to try out...?

Hmm... I've been lurking around looking for something like this. I REALLY need to get my feet wet again, as BtS has completely shattered my confidence in proper Civ play. That this is Vanilla should be a refreshing change.

Sign me up!

I am unfortunately using 1.74... so tell me what the version is I need and I'll go about downgrading...

Mansa, huh? Mining and the wheel... why does that sound like such a good combo?

Well... MANSA IT IS!

Taking a leaf from Sirian's book...

Sirian said:
Religion? We don't need no steenking religion!

Sorry, just having a little fun.

However, I'm not sure if we should set an objective yet, as we... well... don't have a start yet. I think that you should look at your starting position, and then go from there.

Also, let's make this thing look more official.

Difficulty: Noble
Civilization/Leader: Malinese/Mansa Musa
Map: Standard Custom Continents (4 Continents)
Speed: Normal
AI civs: 7

Anything else?

Well, let's analyze. Mansa's UU is the Skirmisher, an Archer UU with 1 extra strength and an extra first strike chance. Not the greatest, but it should let us not worry about the barbs that pop up. The trait lend themselves to turtling to space, so perhaps that's where we should go.
I personally prefer epic speed, but otherwise you can wait for some more people to show up, or just roll a start and let people enter then.

I'm pretty sure the version I'm using is 1.67. If that's not the exact number, it's the one before the newest one.

I'll screen our starting position to you guys. We need to start.

This'll be the turn order:

First time 30 turns, second 20, then ten turns for the rest of the game.

I'm not exactly sure we need to choose the easiest possible leader to play, seeing as this is at Noble. But a Financial leader or a strong UU is always optimal if we're looking for something like that.

Hoping the patch is 1.61...

It is 1.61 then. I knew it was 1.6 something.

Anyways, I just started up the game, and we have quite an interesting starting position...

We started next to a tribal village!

So, based on this, what do you think? A lot of desert, but that's perfect for the Malinese...

EDIT: Just thought this was a little humorous... but we got a river going through desert... should we have picked the egyptians?

Edit for first-time viewers of the thread: This, and the next two images, are not accurate, ok?

Tasty floodplains, ripe for cottaging

It's not unnatural to start next to a tribal village.

A little :health: and :hammers: poor, but a top-notch cottage Bureaucracy capital.

I see an Oasis. According to thread I read a while ago, the optimum way to get a Hydra( Three Religions founded in the capital) is Mansa Musa with an Oasis.

We could try, and pray there are no other spiritual civs...

Start up training a worker and working the oasis spot, while chasing the hydra then? Should we just pop a city down where we start, or move somewhere better?

Let's just hope we get Masonry as the tech from that village.

Wow... the FPs will be nice for getting our commerce through the roof quickly... or a GP farm, take your pick. It appears we've got an ocean to the south, and another body of water to the north, although I can't tell if it's large.

I usually play with the grid on so I can see the squares. Therefore, I can't tell if there are any dead desert tiles in the fat cross. I am somewhat disturbed by the utter lack of visible resources... but hopefully we'll score some metals.

Settling in place gets us a lot of workable farmland... but it basically cuts out the possibility of making a city at the river mouth. I wouldn't move north though, because it'll probably place us one tile off the coast.

EDIT: We won't get tech from that village, because we don't have research capability yet. I think I read somewhere that techs only pop if you're a turn after starting your cities.

There's one dead desert tile, it's the one that's two tiles east of the settler.

Well, gtg for now, I'll play my turns this evening.

EDIT: Well, I don't want to wait a turn, but you can start research in your zeroth turn. You just have to manually do it.

Is that not the Oasis tile? It can't be improved, but it's still powerful early on.

Another note: When Taking screenies, make sure to add gridlines and Resources.

Through conjecture, the oasis is outside of our fat cross, so if we want the Hydra, we'll need to move 1E, but then that jettisons the fogged trees.

I count 6 flood plains, so we can support 3 specialists/miners. also, -2 health from the FP, so our pop cap will be 4 until we can hook up health.

EDIT: The hill next to us must have a metal. It must. Period.

some comments:

According to thread I read a while ago, the optimum way to get a Hydra( Three Religions founded in the capital) is Mansa Musa with an Oasis.
Isn't that supposed to be "Spain on a Lake" (TM) (Spain on Oasis is better though, but less frequent) and India on Oasis is also better than Mansa, I guess. (because Mansa does not start with Mysticism... When one AI starts with it, you can probably say Goodbye to Buddhism, esp. Izzy)

As for:
Just thought this was a little humorous... but we got a river going through desert... should we have picked the egyptians?
Timbuktu also lies in a desert on a river (just not the Nile but the Niger)

I'd settle in place, btw, moving eastwards likely just gets you a some desert tiles and a few plains...
I would have joined, if I had time to play. well, /lurking on
