I can regularly win my games on Prince but when I step up to Monarch I regularly struggle. I'd like to practise my city specialization in an effort to improve my city selection and building priorities.

This idea is plagiarized from Greyfox in the SG: Fox-03 -- Trying to be Special, so most of the credit must go to him. I've copied lots and just added a bit to take it forward to BtS.

The Game

As per the original game, the following rules apply:
  • Every city founded must be designated as one of the following:
    • Production City: a city focused on production.
    • Science City: a city focused on generating beakers.
    • Gold City: a city focused on generating gold.
    • GP-Farm: a city focused on breeding Great People.
    • Hybrid City: focused on more than one thing.
    • Espionage City: a city focused on creating espionage points.
  • One GP-Farm and one Espionage city must be allocated. The espionage city will have to picked by the time we have 8 cities.
  • For every Hybrid city founded, there must be at least two non-hybrid cities.
  • Cities taken from the AI need to be allocated a specialisation immediately and start building the necessary buildings.
  • City Designation cannot be changed after city is founded, with the following exception:
    • Holy City: non-Gold City may be changed into a Gold City or Hybrid City if a shrine is built.
    • Espionage City: if when we get to 8 cities, we haven't allocated an espionage city, we can change one of our older cities to espionage.
  • Each city must prioritize city improvements according to their designation:
    • Prod City: Barracks, Coal Plant OR Hydro Plant (for river cities), Drydock, Factory, Forge, Hydro Plant, Industrial Park, Levee, Stable
    • Gold City: Bank, Grocer, Market, Customs House, Harbor
    • Science City: Academy, Monastries (all available), Laboratory, Library, Observatory, University
    • Espionage City: Castle, Courthouse, Intelligence Agency, Jail, Security Bureau, Walls (for the Castle)
  • The following wonders can only be built in a certain city type:
    • Prod City: Heroic Epic, Ironworks, Maoi Statues, West Point, Red Cross, Military Academy, Pentagon
    • Gold City: Wall Street, Temple of Artemis
    • Science City: Academy, Great Library, Oxford University
    • GP-Farm: National Epic, Globe theatre
    • Espionage City: Scotland Yard
  • Prioritized buildings means that these buildings take priority over all other buildings in their respective cities. Current builds may be finished prior to starting the new build. The following exceptions apply:
    • Wonders: All world, national and project type wonders.
    • Growth/Happiness related Buildings (when needed): Granary, Lighthouse, Aqueduct, Harbour, Theatres, Temples, Colosseum, Public Transportation, Recycling Centre, Supermarket
    • Units: Military Units for Prod City, Non-Military Units for Non-Prod City
  • Corporations do not need to be prioritised or even founded, but if we get any corporation in any of our cities, the following must be spread according the the city designations:
    • Prod City: Creative Constructions OR Mining Inc.
    • Gold City: Civilized Jewellers
    • Science City: Aluminium Co., Standard Ethanol

Game Settings

  • Difficulty level: Monarch (at minimum)
  • Map type: Open to discussion Continents
  • Map size: Standard
  • Game speed: Epic
  • Civ & Leader: Either Random or we can select a specific one if anybody has a preference.
  • Victory conditions: All enabled.

Any of these settings are open to suggestions. Any suggestions on the rules will be considered too, so fire away.

My preferences are for a Continents map and for a leader I was thinking Organised to allow us to peacefully expand to a decent number of cities and Philosophical to help our GP city really churn out GP's. That means Frederick who's UU and UB are so late it almost makes them useless :( .

Starting position, settings and save will be posted when the roster is full and everyone's piped in on the decisions to been made.

Roster:
- Kikinit
- Robo Kai
- glenmetz
- pat4
- Xyqtt
- omglazers

Ethiquette

Normal SG ethiquette applies. Standard 24hrs got it, 48hrs to play and report.

Sounds good. I used to be able to win on Monarch last year. I'm gonna try my hand at this "learning-specialization" game now.

Well, if you prefer some leaders with better/earlier UU's, may I suggest other leaders:
Gandhi - Spi/PHI
Asoka - Spi/ORG
Napoleon - Chm/ORG (sadly, the Salon messes up the GP farm big time)

I would love to get involved in this. I am playing a monarch solo game now and trying to specialize all of my cities, so really love this idea. I'm open on really any Civ also.

Hi,

I'd be very interested in this sg. I am a pretty bad city specialiser and could use some guidance. I'm a prince player but I can hold my own at Monarch. If you want someone more experienced than me than I'll just lurk. I have no objections to Frederik and I disagre with your pesimism about his UU and UB. I think they match up well and if you are in a decent position come the industrial age than nothing will stop you.

Robo Kai, glenmetz and pat4, welcome on board.

Looking at all the traits, they all have their advantages. Hard to say what would help us in this game. I would be quite happy to just make it random and play the way the RNG decides.

I'll see if we can get a couple more on the roster and roll a start.

I just stepped up to monarch, and like to join? I'm bad at specialization so it can be really helpfull for me ^^ And when we pop a great scientist, must make an academy in all our science cities? OR can we lightbulb? Same for great spy? And random civ is okay for me

Xyqtt

Edit: Are we playing with brunic patch or not?

Xyqtt, you are welcome to join in.

On the Academy and Scotland Yard, we can choose if we wish to do them or use the scientist for other purposes. The point is that they can only be done in the city that is specialised towards them.

I play with Bruic's patch as it does seem to fix some of the problems with BtS.

EDIT: I'll post the save in a few hours before i go to bed whether we get another to join or not so we can discuss the start.

Lurking closely this one

I $uck in city specializing - will look at this game as an online tutorial to it :D
Good luck guys!

I've rolled the start with settings as in the first post. I chose a random leader as I like to play it that way. We rolled...

I actually like this. It will allow us to go for a religion and hopefully get a holy city to go with the theme of the game. I do love a properly specialised holy city as it rakes in the ca$h.

The starting position is...

And I like this too. Some health resources, happy resources, coastal, forests to chop and grassland hills to mine if we so choose.

I think settling in place is the way to go and start on a warrior to let the city grow whilst we wait for fishing to the go for a workboat. But before Fishing, I'd go for Meditation to get Buddhism. One problem I see with this is that we don't have any commerce cells to work so we won't be getting to Meditation in a hurry and if we have another spiritual leader out there we may lose out.

The save is attached if anybody wishes to take a closer look.

I would say move the warroir NE and mayeb move the settler 1 E, moving the settler 1 N would lose 2 grass hills, so that would hurt our production. I'm not so fond of lots of water tiles.

I usual like to leave religion to the AI, the chances we get first to budism or hinduism are slim, I would prefer mining --> bronze chop/whip stonehenge.

and build order warrior ---> worker

and does the rule apply for our capital, because I would say it would be a hybrid. But that's not allowed.

I've moved the warrior to the hill.

I agree with moving 1E and I guess at this level, missing the religion would hurt us too much. We will have have to take a holy city later.

The first city can be Hybrid. We need to have not more than 1/3 hybrid when we get to 3 cities.

I suggest we dot explore and than dot map so that everyone is reading of the same hyme-sheet. I am pretty bad at dot mapping and I can't physically animate it, but it would be usefull for our game if someone did it.

Just popping in to say hello. I would have joined if I have the time, but unfortunately I am going on a Civ4-hiatus rather soon.

Seems like a good start. And I agree with Hackapell, GP Farm seems like it. However, since the designation cannot change, I guess that's why Kikinit is hesitating in using it. But really, since GP-Farm does not have any build priority, it is like a Hybrid except it must house the Nat Epic.

Hackapell, thanks for the comment. It would also be a great science city with cottages everywhere and a few mines to build the required buildings. I guess I've got a habit of looking for floodplains for GP cities but this does have what it needs to build plenty of GP's.

Grey, in my rules for GP city I state that only the national epic can be built. Academy must go in Science city. I'm just so used to putting academies in my capitals...

It does just scream GP city though, especially 1E with the fresh water nicely positioned to farm like mad even before we get to CS and Biology.

I vote for GP farm then. The reason for that Hybrid rule is so that we don't just name every city hybrid as a builder like me is prone to do. That rule forces us to properly specialise the cities. I should set that rule in everyone of my SP games.

This is my got it. I'll play tonight to give the others a chance to have their say.

PS. We are still looking for one more player if anybody out there wants to join!

That city also screams for heavy whipping with globe theater. But I agree with the GP-Farm.

And are we going to chop stone-henge? I'll never do tha tin sp games, because I always skip mysticism. So don't know if it is possible without stone.

PS. We are still looking for one more player if anybody out there wants to join!
If you want me? I'll do it :p
Only played a few monarch games so far, I can handle it and team helps of course. I haven't played CIV since my computer broke AGAIN   but now we have a brand new one that runs even cod4 so ye I believe it's safe to SG again!

The religion would be a gamble, but trying to get fishing and THEN the religion is even MORE a gamble! Still, we should get atleast one early religion. If we want to make a real monster commerce city, we really want it to be a holy city with a shrine. Perhaps go for fishing first, get out the workboats and after fishing, crank out a settler, find a good commerce city spot, THEN find judaism (or hinduism, if we are VERY lucky, they are on the same line anyway)? Just throwing out mad ideas  (Gambling for buddhism sounds like the best plan).

Agreed that first city should be great person farm. Which wonders are we aiming for? Stonehenge wouldn't be as helpful as it can be if we already have a religion to get culture. Great wall needs to go to our spy city. Mmm oracle maybe?

I've never played an SG before, but i'm dying to try. I never have been able to break the Monarch barrier and have troubles in the past w/ Spec'ing cities although i've been doing better.

Anything I need to do aside from proclaiming 'I want in!' to play?

If not, I WANT IN!!

Move Ideas:

Move the settler 1 E and plant him right there. Currently, where you are, you're taking in a lot of coast which ruins it's potential to be a food producing city, and also you have one ocean tile which is totally useless for Saladin. Not only does he lack any real water-based synergy [Rangar, Johao, Oranje] but it's just a waste having to walk that worker around to the mine. Move him 1 E plant him and be happy.

That lake means easy irrigation for the plains around it, and you come as close as you can to the desert w/o having to touch it.

Exploration should definitely occur to the NW first and loop back around. The first city will probably be a food monster so exploring the desert for flood plains seems like a waste.

On Religion
Go for Monotheism if you want but as it is right now, with fishing being a priority, Hindu and Buddhism seem out of our reach.

[Hope I get in!]

May be premature to decide on capital's specialisation until you've done at least some exploring.
Capitals are imo a special case because of bureaucracy boosting hammers and commerce.
