Hey guys

Just had an idea. Maybe spider pens could be given another function, and enable you to built spiders. Obviously these units are quite powerful so would cost a lot. Also, maybe with the stirrups tech you could have mounted spider units? I could think of more but I want to see what you guys think of the main idea first?

And while they're at it, figure out why my giant spiders never make babies. I didn't get them fixed. :P

Cool idea though. I'd be interested in seeing a giant spider mounted unit. It could even be hidden except from recon units like the giant spider is normally.

It is a pretty small chance (5%) to make a spider from combat anyway. But the main catch is that HN units cannot capture/generate units. Hence an HN werewolf makes no werewolves, HN Taskmasters don't capture slaves, and HN Giant Spiders will not make with the babies.

Yeah, I know it's only 5%. I also tend to declare nationality with them and go on a rampage. It just seems that with the dozens of units I tend to kill with them in one game I would have received one by now. I guess I just have bad luck.

I guess I'll look into spider viagra or spanish fly for spiders or something. :P

Cool glad you guys like the idea. Personally I didn't know that spiders had a chance of generating more spiders from combat! Seems odd that it would be combat that brought this on though. Spiders breed like we do (well not like mammels, but it doesnt involve combat... usually lol).

There is a two sided coin to my idea though. Building spiders with spider pens would allow you to use those spiders to produce more spider pens, increasing your spider production ability. The downside is that you would end up with LOADS of silk to trade off to other players, which could be a bit unbalencing despite its realism :)

True, but then again, spiders aren't the most populous of animals in the game. They'd most likely not be heading straight for bronzeworking, so would be handicapped from the start. The trade benefits of all that silk would be a nice reward for that choice. I don't see a lot of players prioritizing research down the hunting line that often, and it would be a nice incentive for them. Also, there's no guarantee that you'll get yourself a spider.

I really want Kael to remove the code blocking HN units from capturing or spawning units, and perhaps give the HN promotions to any unit they capture/create.

I don't like the idea of making spiders buildable, but spider riders could be cool. How about as a Svartalfar UU, which could only be made through the way Goblins used to turn to Warg riders when they killed wolves.

(Hmm, I just realized that instead of spending hours trying to figure out how Kael make goblins become wolf riders in the event manager, it would be much easier to just create a "mount" spell that they could use when on the same tile as wolves, plus this could be easily extended to dark elf scouts/giant spiders/spider riders.)

Why was that removed anyways? It was so cool..

It's a neat idea, but...

You cannot build the Spider Pen until you get Animal Handling. As this also lets you build Rangers, which would you rather have?

I think Spiders can be devastating in the early game, but by mid-game and even a little before, they are easily killed by barb Lizardmen and ai civ Hunters.

Someone else mentioned how infrequently they produce babies now. I am with him on this. My last game I had two Giant Spiders, both who accumulated the max 100 XP killing barbarians...and neither had produced a SINGLE baby spider.

If the ai can keep winning battles when their combat odds are 5% or less, why can't I get any baby spiders at 5%. :crazyeye:

Yeah, Svartalfar-drow-spiders. Spider breeding was nice: there were a plenty of expoits. :)

I'd like to see something more specific from spiders like Spider Web improvement buildable by spiders in all kinds of forests and jungles: invisible, makes any passing enemy unit (or any unit if in neutral lands) immobile for a few turns then destroyed.

Hmm spider web improvement sounds cool. Or maybe you could have a Drow style wonder. Something like city of a thousand webs (which would be kinda like Ched Nasad if you know anything about forgotten realms). The requirement would be a spider pen in the city, plus three spider pens in total (or something like that). All units get a 25% defense bonus in the city for building it or something similar.

What do you guys think?

I would also add a new resource Spider Silk which the Spider Pen would produce. The main reason is that regular silk is SO common it seems in most games, that making a redundant resource via a building pointless. The Spider Silk resource would pretty much be that same as silk (+1 happy), unless the building should also add some sort of additional benefit (e.g: +1 defensive bonus to arcane units, as spider silk makes for good caster armor;)

Do Baby Spiders grow up nowadays? Are they good for anything but killing?

I like the idea of mounted spiders and I know the svarts aren't Drow but it does seem to fit them better, maybe as a replacement to rangers or a corrupted option of fawns/Satyrs for an FOL/Svart.

Flavourwise even using a graft flesh mechanic for possibly priest/spider combo

It would be interesting if a Spider Pen allowed you to make spider riders.

Spider Pen
Can be built by a Spider
Provides 1 silk
Can build Spider Riders

The Tainted Web
World Wonder
Requires Animal Handling
Requires Spider Pen
Double Production with Shadow Mana
Creates a Spider Pen in all cities

Spider Rider
Requires Spider Pen or Stirrups
2 :move:, double movement in forest
4 :strength:, +1 poison :strength:
Invisible to most units

I'm not sure as too the hammer costs.

Mechanics sound good.

I think this would work quite well. :)
