1500AD v1.1

Version 1.1 uploaded 14/02/2008
Changed handicap setting for game balance. Changed the invasion army of Ottoman, Mughal and Japan to offensive units such that AI knows how to use them to invade the lands according to history. Added a great engineer to Spain, Portugal, England and France allowing human playing to build a second capital in the new world. Updated the map to v4.2 of GEM.

Description
While Spain and Portugal are colonizing, Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal are also expanding rapidly. Can any of these nations challenges Ming China's position as the greatest empire on Earth?

This is the first scenario released developed on the Giant Earth Map (GEM). Attached is an excel file that I've used to calculate the city sizes. (It was intended to calculate the military sizes as well but due to lack of references, it is left blank at the moment).

The playable nations are:

England, France, HRE, Venice, Papal States, Spain, Portugal,

Union of Kalmar, Poland, Hungary, Russia,

Morocco, Arabia, Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal, Shaybanid,

Lodhi, Bahmanid, Vijayanagar, Ayutthaya, Malacca,

Mongol, Chagatai, Jurchen, Ming, Joseon, Japan,

Songhay, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe,

Aztec, Maya, Inca, Tonga

Instruction
You will need to play this scenario under the Giant Earth Map mod, which can be downloaded from: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=253945

Place the WBS file in the privatemap folder under the 'Giant Earth Map' mod directory. You should then be able to choose '1500AD on GEM' when you loaded the mod.

Could you change the name of Helsingfors to Helsinki... Its true we were under the Swedish rule those days, but city name was still Helsinki.

As you may expect, I don't speak either swedish or Finns. Could you explain the difference between Helsingfors and Helsinki? My reference 1500AD map used Helsingfors.

Helsingfors (= the Swedish name) was founded in 1550 by Gustav Adolf - so no need to change names (sorry Fin Imperial...). Helsinki is ofcourse the name preferred by Finns.:goodjob:

Hi!

Just played a while as the Papal State. I suppose it is intended them to have HUGE amounts of gold. I tried switching my cultural rating up to a 100% for the first dozen of turns. Results were very nice, I absorbed all of Italy, including Venice, which meant even a much bigger amount of gold. Got a Great Engineer to Malta and built the National wonder which gives extra hammer on water tiles (can't be bothered with the name, sorry). I'm trying to grab a cultural victory so far, with Rome being only 15 turns from getting Legendary victory and Malta having quite a nice culture so far. Ended up absorbing Tunis too.

I like how each civ comes with quite a different strategy, some of them easy and others quite hard. My computer is ok so I could play till mid XVIII century or so. Spain got most of mayan cities and they ended up as their vassal. Aztecs so far haven't lost any cities, so dunno if it was just my game or Spain should be more encouraged to conquer them.

So yeah, will try other civs next time and give you some feedback!

EDIT: Oh, btw. The Apostolic Palace isn't built yet on the start. Is it meant to be like that or should Rome have it at the beginning? Might be interesting to see a muslim nation getting it tho.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, it is my intention to give the different nations some distinct features, so Papal states would suppose to work on preaching Christianity, Venice on spreading the only corporation yet on earth, Spain of course to colonize the new world, the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughals are the warmongers and Ming China would play peacefully with internal construction etc.

But I didn't intended Venice to flip so easily. OK well, you are putting 100% culture and I don't think I can do any more to help because I already gave quite a lot of national wonders to the venice cities to ensure they doesn't flip. (They were fliped to Rome and Ottoman too easily in my own test play).

For Spain, in my test play, I always see Maya and Aztec becoming Spain's vassals after about 20 turns.

The Apostolic Palace is not built because I am not sure should I really place it. Like you said, the Muslim or the rest of the world could have a chance of getting it.

While I was digging a quesadilla during lunch I tried playing as Malacca. I quit about 1668 or something like that because I couldn't keep up with the techs and it was taking ages to pop up workers and work boats. It seems like a good civ to use if you dare to enter modern ages with it, because of the rich terrain it offers. But I rather conquer it by an european civ. Ming usually gets a bit too strong, I guess. No one really challenges it too much and they usually are the first ones to discover liberalism. Korea was researching communism by 1650~.

Any plans on doing any other scenarios later on? I'd love to see a classical period one with the silk route (corporations just to represent it) in action!

How does Tonga usually turn out? I was thinking of trying out a round with them this weekend if my comp. isn't too slow to handle this.
