Revenge of The Greek God of War!: Start

Welcome to the replay of my next RPC: Alexander the Greek God of War! These challenged are meant to be fun and educational, but as the Alexander game ended poorly and early it really was neither. The first game ended in a loss as the always war conditions finally caught up to us and even divine intervenmtion was hopeless. So we will replay this game as I think Al is an entertaining leader and deserves proper respect and glory, as well as putting on a good show.

This game will go a little different as we will play a shuffle map and will accept nothing short of a Conquest victory. Not domination, conquest, Al wants all dead!!!! Normal setting so we can use diplomacy. But I plan to illustrate the aspects of warring in this game and plan screenshots to show that, at I plan to but if the fever of war causes me to forget screenshots I hope you understand.

Settings

Shuffle standard map
Emperor Level
Random everything else
Only Conquest victory condition activated (does this pertain to the AI also?)

Rules
1) Only Conquest victory allowed!
2) Al must adopt vassalage and theocracy as soon as he can, and stick with them for the entire game. Police state in an option but should be encouraged, especially if we get the pyramids.
3) GGs are considered Al's illegitamate children and must be attached to a unit. No settling or military academies.
4) No vassals for AL. No defensive Pacts either.
5) Al may form alliances and offer trades for helping/declaring in war. However, back-stabbing in encouraged (come on you all love that aspect of AL).
6) No cheats this time. World-Builder is off-limits.

So as ALEXANDER comes down from Olympus once again, there is fire and hate in his eyes at his previous humiliation. He will have his revenge and show his brother just which way is the superior one, War or Peace. (for the following Pericles game we will NOT play always peace, yet we shall look for a peaceful victory from a compact nation of 6 cities).

So onward to the Game, I am certainly looking for some vengence warfare here especially after the defensive Toku and first Al RPC games. Let's just hope we are not Isolated!

OK, our Awe-inspiring Greek God

And the start

OK, we start with fishing and hunting. Where do we start?

Maybe this is just me, but I would waste the turn and move the settler 1W and grab the fish, while still getting corn and sheep. But thats just me =D
WOO First post!

Pity about that first attempt. I take it this one will not be always war? Regarding the start, it makes sense to move 1W, given that you start with fishing. A better tile than plains hill deer if you ask me. You lose the fresh water bonus, but health won't be a problem -- already can see 4 :health: resources. Better luck this time around.

Bah! I hate those annoying starts where it puts 2 of the cities 'special' tiles on diagonals and says there can be only one (personally I tell the map generating gremlin his work is shoddy and make him do it again when he pulls that crap). I guess settle in place, doesn't look like there's many hills to mine other than the one you got so the 2 hammers from the plains hill deer will be needed early. You also get to build a levee for a whopping 2 hammers, but it's better than moving off of the river and getting 0 hammers i guess.

The current game is NOT always war. I plan to war alot, but not all at once.

Based on the above statement I think settling in place seams better as we can get a 3 food/3/hammer deer hill and more production compared with the 5F/1commerce fish. West of the Sheep looks like ocean and east of the corn looks like land. Food and Hammers in this town!

Settle in place IMO.

IIRC a deer plains hill without forest is 3f 2h. With forest it's 3f 3h (since the camp doesn't chop it). It might be worthwile not working that tile until a forest grows onto it (shouldn't take long hopefully).

moving 1W loses the fresh water bonus as well. Move the cowardly-we-only-defend scout one west to see if there is another seafood. If not then settle in place. One west is hammer poor and more :unhealthy: than settling in place. You will end up with a pile of ocean tiles if you go one west as well. Also if you squint at the deer you see a lil tree on the left edge of the resource indicator. The hill is a forested plains hill. 3H3F with the camp. Same as a plains cow, but you don't have to research AH to get it. Huge boost early on. Also 2S os the starting location is a blank grassland tile. Blanks in the middle of a capitals BFC forests usually mean copper, iron or ponies. With the corn, deer and sheep you are + 7 on the food-o-meter. That means 7 workshops for production. Athens will make a nice militarty city, but all the ocean tiles mean it isn't really a strong location for a capital. Little fresh water means practically no farms until CS. And without rivers cottages are not strong enough to support your early economy. Settle in place and start pumping settlers to establish some empire. Then use greek diplomacy (the pointy stick kind) to grab a neighbors capital. Hope fully it is food rich with better surrounding terrain for cottaging or a GP farm.

Settle in place. You already have more food than you'll know what to do with, and you definitely don't want to lose the fresh water.

I agree with settling inplace and take advantage of the corn early,

I hope to learn a thing or two about warring, its always a neccessary evil to me and I'm not too good at it!

Better luck this time. :)

I agree with CivCorpse. However, it should be quick, lest the REX and lack of supportive economy destroys your research and leaves you to far behind. But I guess that won't matter too much if the AI isn't aggressive and less likely to wage an early war.

Good luck with this one Mad Scientist! I've been following your latest RPC's with great attention. They're great for relatively inexperienced players as .. you make errors! and that's a good thing!

As for this one, I vote for settling in place except if your scout finds anything essential. You have more than enough food, river will give you health and you can still pick up the health point of the fish when borders pop out of BFC.

West of the sheep is coast, so you're better off with two hills!

@ Geofrroy, Thanks! I can play a good game but as you say I do make mistakes which have cost us a few RPC's (as evidenced by shadow games winning Shaka I and teh Toku game).

@ Grogaroo. I hope to show off some warring! I am not the best war-monger on these forums but I am more than adequate if a little sloppy!

@ Merousa. Thanks. Very interesting as we can be at war with Modern weapons then throughout the Modern era. But then again what kind of God of War would that be!

@ CivCorpse, Man you are one funny poster and I like your signature! I agree with all you said. Good point about that blank region.

@ To All: I am thinking of settling in place also. If we get a continents map I will need those pollution buildings and will be very happy to have the health from the river. Also as mention that gives us more production, and lot's of forrests to chop our Phalynx or chariots with! First build shall be a worker for the deer and tech order I am thinking of agriculture/AH (cheaper since I'll have hunting and AGr)/archery then mining/BW. Bump the wheel up in the Que if we nab nearby horses.

Settle in place for the hill and the river. Move the scout 1w>1S to check for seafood.
Is there a difference in the outcome of popping huts with a unit or a border?

I think that maybe you should bear this in mind and build a workboat first.

Tech Agg > AH > Mining > Wheel/bronze

Are you going to run an SEmostlyish?

Oh yer bad luck on Alex1 and good luckwith this one!

I really love the GG rule you have going on! You should name the GG when you attach them to your units.

Popping huts ar ebetter via culture as they increas your chances of getting a free tech (No Barb pop although we have a scout, and no experience points).

Yes I plan to run a SE if I can get one going, but I am willing to use cottages when applicable. Even though beaker come specialists, that added commerce for gold will help alot.

Alex1 would have been a dull game anyway, diplomacy adds so much more to these games.

I think the prenaming of the GGs sounds fine as they are.

No... please don't say that :( A Role play is so much better with real names.

Alexander had lots of famous generals who helped him conquer half the ancient world. We have good records of what they did for him and how they fought among themselves after he died in 323 BC.

Here are a few of them

Parmenion, Nearchos, Perdiccas, Antipater, Craterus, Antigonus, Ptolemy, Eumenes, Seleucus, Peithon, and Antigenes.

OK, fair enough!
