Alexander, The Greek God of War! Volume III: Start

Welcome to the replay of my next RPC: Alexander the Greek God of War! These challenged are meant to be fun and educational, but as the Alexander game ended poorly and early it really was neither. The first game ended in a loss as the always war conditions finally caught up to us and even divine intervenmtion was hopeless. The second try I accidently set the difficulty to emperor which I can play on but struggle, the added RPC difficulty made it difficult. Yes, Al is full of alot of excuses:D So we will replay this game a thir and FINAL time as I think Al is an entertaining leader and and as well as puts on a good show.

This game will go a little different as we will play a Pangea map and will accept nothing short of a Conquest victory. Not domination, conquest, Al wants all dead!!!! Normal setting so we can use diplomacy. But I plan to illustrate the aspects of a land war in this game and plan screenshots to show that, but if the fever of war causes me to forget screenshots I hope you understand.

Settings

Pangea standard map
Monarch Level
Random everything else
Only Conquest victory condition activated

Rules
1) Only Conquest victory allowed!
2) Al must adopt vassalage and theocracy as soon as he can, and stick with them for the entire game. Police state in an option but should be encouraged, especially if we get the pyramids.
3) GGs are considered Al's illegitamate children and must be attached to a unit. No settling or military academies.
4) No vassals for AL. No defensive Pacts either.
5) Al may form alliances and offer trades for helping/declaring in war. However, back-stabbing in encouraged (come on you all love that aspect of AL).
6) No cheats this time. World-Builder is off-limits. NO EXCEPTIONS THIS TIME (unless of course Al is losing ;) )

So as ALEXANDER comes down from Olympus for a third time, there is fire and hate in his eyes at his previous humiliations. He will have his revenge and show his brother just which way is the superior one, War or Peace. (for the following Pericles game we will NOT play always peace, yet we shall look for a peaceful victory from a compact nation of 6 cities).

So onward to the Game, I am certainly looking for some vengence warfare here.
OK, our Awe-inspiring Greek God

Looking better already, who do we kill first!!!!!

EDIT: It's not obvious but there are 2 fish resources off shore which would fall in the BFC if we settle in palce. I changed the map to include the resource indicators.

How would you be isolated on a pangaea map?

Also, it would be helpful if resource indicators were on.
True! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Three Doors Down - Kryptonite

Yes, that would be tough. I copied what I wrote from Al II, this one was changed to be a Pangea map.

I also changed the OP start screenshot to include resource indicators.

Looks like a strong GP farm capital if you settle in place, good number of hills too and Moai statues look goods (but uses up a NW slot, you'll proably want NE here). Navy aint so important on Pangaea though.

Maybe the time to not build Oxford in the capital, find some nice cottageable land next to a river and use that as super science city?

EDIT: Jungle rivers are great for that.

I'm really liking the starting position here. I'm with everyone who says settle in place :D

What can you say, starts with fishing...3 seafood resources...wheat, pity you have Ele's in 3rd ring...

3rd time for Big Al...really, this map should have been the first, all war..Conquest only, made for a pangea map...

As well, you'll be forever pushing eastwards....Just Like Alexander and his push into the Persian Empire.

I hope Cyrus is there......Or was it Xere's he fought?? I forget, maybe a GG will bring his head on a plate for you...

I'll shadow this one now...full on Food/Specialist economy...ITS WAR.!!!!!

Thanks, I actually couldn't see those fish in the first screenshot (although I know you pointed them out), the starting position is looking a lot better now that I know they're in the BFC.

Bad luck on the last attempt, this looks like a much better start and jumbo's near by too! Settling in place looks like the best option.

Good luck :)

Would 1N bring a freshwater bonus?

Build the freaking Mids this game. All that food screams SE. Build the mids. Rex then chop the Mids. I repeat build the Mids. Okay, everyone knows i have wonder addiction issues. But on Pangea maps where land is tight, a SE can really thrive. Especially if you get boxed in. The problem last game was cash flow. And a big part of the cash flow issue was happiness. I usually try and get either CoL if I snag the Mids, or currency if i can't. The extra trade route from each captured city helps a lot and you can always build wealth to keep the science slider up there. With athens being food rich and not situated well for cottaging SE is the way to go. Especially if you want some early wars. I am shadowing this game and from what i have done, you're gonna have a fun game. Best of luck on numero 3 Big Al

Good luck, MadScientist, I hope you are 3rd time lucky.

Please prioritize bronze working for your UU, copper is so rare in BTS. Scouting is very important to check if there is choke point to forward build (even though unlikely) and for bronze. Pyramid is very important for SE, but don't you think it is nicer to capture it from Bismark or Qin? This is Pangea afterall.

Copper, copper, copper!

Eliminating all victory conditions except conquest may lose some flavour in the game and might weaken some AIs who for instance get three legendary cities and still lose.

Third time is a charm. Great start with almost too much food. Still bronze working needs priority number one so you can get enough mines working and you can start chopping. I would forego all wonders and just concentrate on the military (ok maybe stonehenge to give your captured cities some early culture). Lets get big Al going.

Ummm food... Your starting techs are almost perfet for this start, if only the jumbos were in the BFC!

I think you should go mining > BW first then maybe go for an Oracle sling for CoL (cast), whislt mixing Agri, etc, and Masonary (mids) in. Mids and Oracle maybe to many wonders early but they could both prove pretty handy - the mids more so.

Early rep and warring go hand in hand IMO, I love capturing a city and turning every one in to artists to pop my borders - nets me beakers (4 with rep!), culture and reduces the native pop of the city through starvation (ok so the wipe is more useful for pop reduction)! Nice.

thats a great start location, definitely settle in place

looks made for an SE, lots of shouting for wonders to be built but if you don't manage to get one you want, well it can't be far away. just borrow it for a while

you also have 3 chops you need to do on those hills and that will be enough to get you at least one wonder

Thanks for all the support for me playing an embarressing third time for this RPC!

AL came out the first time with alot of arrogance, the second time with bloodlust in his eyes, but I think this time he will be a cold-hearted and plodding strategist. HE wants to win and WILL do it this time.

I agree settle in place. Resources are aplenty, 3 seafood and we start with fishing and hunting.

The Plan

1) Techs: archery/mining/BW followed by masonry. We can toss the wheel or sailing after depending where/if the copper is.

2) That provides defense and opens 2 valuable wonders for this game, Great Wall and Pyramids. GW to increase those GG points and pyramids for the SE. Let's show what a true war-mongering SE is like!!

3) Build order: workboat using the tile with the most hammers. Then a WB and some archers. We can delay a worker until we get BW teched.

Of course things can shange once we explore, but my first question and decision point is whether we delay early expansion to nail some wonders. Or get 2 cities established then start?

I would normally get two cities out in your situation followed by Chopping the Great Wall. Being on Pangea you need to be able to grab a key resource with a 2nd city if you have a close "mortal" near by.

Why spend time teching Archer? I would skip Archery as Al's Combat 1 Warriors should be able to handle most anything early. If you get access to Bronze with your 2nd city you can delay that tech tree for awhile.

I'd wait till you have 4 cities before building the mids, you might have stone by then too. Great Wall after the first settler is OK though.
