F8U Crusader

to make full use of the Corsair model, i chanced it a little and the result was the Crusader:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-8_Crusader

model has 281 vertices, 659 triangles and 2*256 textures
uses fighter animation

scale for picture was 0.65

the texture is not the best (almost the one from the A7 Corsair II) , but it should work.

Ciao
The_Coyote

Edit: model linked to jetFighter animation added, also french skin included in the package (the skin can be used for both, JetFighter F8U has more vertices because of the rockets, picture below in the thread)

added to DB: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downlo...o=file&id=9149

Now that would be an early jet fighter.

Now that is beautiful. Based on the A-7 model? No Sidewinder rails though. Guess that makes sense though using the fighter animations. It was the last gunfighter after all.

Very nice!

It might be nice to provide a skin without the American roundel, though, as the French Navy used the Crusader on carriers for a longer period of time (I believe the last one wasn't retired until the late '90s.)

good job!
If you want constructive criticism, read on, otherwise ignore the following :

i dont know if it is worth using 2*256 textures for a plane, first, because on the screenshots, there are not many details, which make use of a 256 texture and second, in game especially planes are really really small. So, performance wise I suggest going to one 256 or 2*128 textures.

Well in this context the F-14 would be more appropriate. The Crusader accquired the nick "The Last Gunfighter" when the F4H (later F-4) Phantom II was introduced with its all missile armament. While the the Air Force eventually gained a gun armed Phantom with the F-4E the Navy's aircraft continued without a gun. The F-14 Tomcat, introduced from 1972, brought the gun back.

In either case, it's not the last since the gun has been brought back for all air services.

Duh!! Its just a nickname, one that is appropriate given this model is using fighter animations with gunfire. Btw the Marine Corps AV-8Bs do not have an internal gun and neither will the F-35B. If the F-35B fully replaces USMC F-18s then the that service will not have a fixed wing aircraft with and internal gun.

A "gunfighter" is a fighter aircraft designed to use guns as its primary air to air weapon. This includes such aircraft as the P-51, F-86 and F8U.

Most modern fighters also have guns... Late model F-4s were outfitted with guns for air to air use... F-15s, F-16s, F-14s, F-18s and F-22s all have internal guns for air to air combat... This does not make them gunfighters. All of these aircraft were designed to use air to air missiles as their primary weapons. Guns are strictly a "last ditch" air to air weapon on these aircraft.

The F8U was certainly one of the last gunfighters... The last American one, for sure.

It's likely that the F-35B will completely replace the AV-8B in Marine service... However it's my understanding that the F-35C will replace in F-18 in Marine service... Or that the Marines may simply turn over the F-18 squadrons to the Navy [who will replace them with F-35Cs] and focus on their STOVL AV-8B/F-35B fleet.

thanks! more answer to this plane than i expected. there will be perhaps later a second skin (french) and even a model which use the jetfighter animation

@ seZereth

thanks for the advice! Constructive critism is always liked.

but now you left me confused, when i write i use 2*256 texture, i mean, one is the color map, the second texture is the gloss map. Is this still to much? I use 256 as size because it´s used by the standard fighter. (but there is only one standard fighter in the game)

Regarding textures i still have to learn a lot, if i look at my uv maps, sometimes i think why i waste so much space , but i consider it as part of my learnig process (and i think my uv maps get better)

And i have no idea what is better for in game use. For example, using a 256 color map and a 128 gloss, or should both have the same size

any advice would be thankful accepted

You could probably get away with using a lower rez glossmap (like 128x128), since that doesn't require as high a resolution for basically the same effect.

Did a teamcolour version of the unit. I also reduced the size of the glossmap, and the unit doesn't look any more worse for wear because of it.

@ Xenomorph

thanks too, for all the teamcolour and buttons

i think i will change to 128 gloss from now (even if i have no idea if it help performance wise, but there it will not hurt (mostly) the optik).

Ciao

PS: and thanks for the replies
