I have never seen one (knock on wood) even though I have built nuke plants. What happens in the event of one?

You get a load of fallout around the city which reduces food and destroys improvements on the tile, also gives unhealthiness to the city.

You can't improve the tiles with fallout until you scrub the fallout which requires ecology tech.

I'm not sure whether half the population is lost, as per a nuclear strike.

EDIT: It starts off global warming too, which turns tiles into desert at random.

I never build em.

Im suffering from Sid's Syndrome.... multiple Nuclear Meltdowns...

If i remember correctly ull also lose some buildings.

I was like you up until recently, then I had it happen to me five times in one game (BtS, Lincoln, Noble)... that really puts a dent in your spaceship production... as mentioned above, you get fallout around your city and loose some buildings...

The probability of a meltdown is "only" 1 / 2000. However beeing checked every turn and for evey city with a plant, it can add up...

If a meltdown occurs, exatly the same method (NuclearExplosion) is called, as when a city is hit by a Nuke. Some buildings are destroyed, the troops are dameged and some pop is lost.

A interesting side-effect might be, that Bomb Shelters do reduce the damage your city's population and troop will take from a meltdown.

Is it really that low? I've had meltdown once or twice and I'm pretty sure I've had less than ten Nuclear Plants total in all of my games and never had them being used for a long time, because the game has ended because of victory. I guess I've just had really bad luck.

Really? Though they only become available after the Manhattan Project has been built? If true, that's really interesting and adds the value of the Manhattan Project.

As i said - the fact it's checked for every plant on every turn might make the chances "Add Up"...

It does seem so from the code.
