I had some trouble geting the upload link to work but I think Iv'e fixed it now.
To use the unit, place all the files in to a folder called Ironfrigate in your CivIII/art/units/ folder and then add the unit to a scenario.

The flics are all quite big, and the whole unit comes to 1.2 megs cos the hull is almost as big as the battle ship and the rigging makes the unit top heavy, If the flics are smaller then it doesn't sit right on the Active unit cursor.

I'm putting my work on other unit on hold till I know whats going to be in the editor; Iv'e got lots of ideas for scenarios, but no idea if any of them will be possible, So I will wait and see.
Anyhow, sometime soon there should be a Napoleonic Rifleman to go with this unit, and perhaps a smaller version of the Iron frigate.

For stats I sugest using this unit as a faster and more expensive version of the Standard Ironclad, with perhaps better attack and deffence values so that players have the option of using a large force of small ironclads to acheive blanket coverage of all fronts, or a small elite force of Ironfrigates to target and destroy enemy fleets.

Wow!!! Another gteat looking unit! where do you think it should go in the Tech tree?

Thanks for the Iron Frigate, Smoking Mirror. :)

where do you think it should go in the Tech tree? -Stormbringer
I guess in the Steal Advance :). ( I am going to use it as an upgrade for the regular Ironclad. )

I desided to leave it at the Steam Power and make it much faster, but a little bit weaker than ironclad. I think it should work fine, and I really don't think it is an upgrade from an ironclad....it is a wooden ship

I havn't had time to test it properly yet, (I only finished the last animation a few hours ago) but Iv'e been ultra carefull so it should work fine (no spelling mistakes in the INI file, hopefully), If any one has any problems with it, post them here so I can update the download.

I'm not sure about the tech this should come with, it's an industrial revolution era unit, so it should be around that time.
With the sailing ships, they started off all wood with only sails, next the british used Copper plating to improve sea worthiness (reduces sea animals growing on the hull) and later converted sailing ships to steam (not as good as dedicated steamers cos of hull shape) and some steamers featured Iron plating on the Hull.
The HMS warrior featured an all Iron Hull, sails for normal transport and a Steam engine for high speed.
The more modern style Ironclads were not very sea worthy and because they relied on steam, they could only travel as far and as fast as their fuel would carry them. But eventualy the two styles merged, the ironclads becoming bigger and faster with improved naval engines and the Iron frigate losing its sails.

I'm going to do a dreadnaught as an intermediary between the industrial revolution Ships and the destroyer, but for now, I'd have it come with the steam engine (or if you are going to make it more powerfull, with Industrialisation).

One possibility is to have it available at the same time as the Ironclad, but with slightly lower stats. Make the Ironclad so it can only sail in Coastal and Sea tiles, while the Ironfrigate can sail over any water tile.

Also, I believe someone already made a dreadnought unit.

that is exactly what I did! And I also made the ironclade a little stronger, but also slower

SM,

Are there Civ specific colours on this ship? I'm only asking this because I can't get FLICster to show any colour other than blue.

This is really, really good. Great job Smoking Mirror.

Thanks, Dark Sheer.

It must just be my version of Flickster, then.

Just thought it would be good to mention that I was going to use this unit graphic for the "Warship" unit in my Civil War scenario. Good unit, it'll give some variety on the high seas. :)

For trip;
Its fine to use any of my units, though most of them are for the 20th century.

For kingpin;
Yes the blue colour is a civ colour- If you don't have civ III installed, the civ colours won't show up cos flickster has to use the palettes from the civIII/Art/units folder.

For JimmyH;
The model itself is actualy very simple, just a hull shaped extrusion with some small details on deck and a lot of tall thin cylinders to make the masts. The life boats are just small duplicates of the Hull, with curved hooks suporting them.

What program did you model it in and could you please send me the file so that I can have a look at how you went about it, I would like to model some ships of my own.

What would be better is a few files that show the progress of you making the model.

Cheers.
James

SM,

Thanks. That explained it! I'll try it on my own machine when I get home.

By the way, very nice unit!

Wow - that is an astonishingly beautiful unit. :goodjob:

Pleeaz give up your day job (unless this is it, of course) ;)

It will become the Steam Frigate in the Double Your Pleasure mod, in case Kal-El, hasn't already informed you.
