Norway. You'll never leave
Im thinking on starting up a new game of civ4, i havent played for eons. (so its back to noble i guess) But i cant deside wether to play a Warlords or BtS game. I liked most of the new stuff BtS brought, except espionage. Infact, i kinda hated it, too much micromanagement for me.

Anyway, is there anyway to disable or nerf it? By some ingame options, or some tweaking or a mod or something?

Cheers.

I kinda didn't like it at first too, but I then discovered: You can leave it :)

You don;t have to use/micromanage/do anything abt espionage to win, it's really just an extra that can give you an edge (if you want)

Sneerk, sadly, no.

It can't be disabled, but you don't have to run active missions. But if you have AIs that are very agressive with the use of espionage (the worst are Stalin, Catherine and Mao), you will be bothered with their missions.

Made something completely up, but if you want to see me make a jackass of myself look below!

Spoiler :

You can but you have to go into the xml files if you really want to get rid of it,

Step by Step
1) go into MY computer,

2)look for the Civilization file,

3)go to Civ 4 folder,

4)go to BTS folder

5)then go into asset folder,

6)then go to xml,

7)then the technology folder

8)then finally you get an xml file called technology info (there will be two files with similar names, the bigger file is the one you want)

9)Then copy that file and paste it on the desktop, this is the backup in case it goes wrong,

10)Open the file you copied from, You should scroll down to see the names of different techs (like Farming and such)

11) Find the start of the xml line desrcibing Alphapet, then look for ienableespanioge and it should =1, make it = 0 and that turns it off! If you then want espanioge turned on again then make it =1.

ALternatively you could make a mod, (not as hard as it sounds)

1)In the mod folder within the BTS folder, create a folder, name it whatever you want,

2)then within in that new folder, create an "Asset" folder,

3) within that a "XML" folder

4) within in that an "Technology" folder then paste a copy of Technology info files from the directory in the above step by step and change it in the same old way

5) When you next play civ 4 load a mod and the name of your mod should appear and when you play it espanioge should not work!

Hope this helps! :) If you want help, feel free to PM me.

Joe Harker Have you done this?

I just made that whole thing up sorry! :crazyeye: (it's friday night and iam not quite with it), I got confused with something else i have been doing

You can do it but you have to disable Alphapet and transfer any of the benefits that it gives you to another tech.

Probably the simplest way I can think of offhand (doesn't mean there isn't an easier one), is to open the CIV4UnitInfos.xml file, scroll down to the UNITCLASS_SPY entry, and change:
<PrereqTech>TECH_ALPHABET</PrereqTech>
to:
<PrereqTech>TECH_FUTURE_TECH</PrereqTech>

It won't completely remove them, but you won't be able to build spies until you get Future Tech. Or, you could just completely remove the entry for UNITCLASS_SPY, I don't think that'll break anything.

Drunkards indeed lol
Espionage is a whole new world where you don't necessarily HAVE to be the best or the brightest; you can just steal the results for a fraction of the cost!
I started out the same way: Thinking Esp. was a way to make my game suck. But once I mastered it...
Give that little red slider a 10% bump, train a few little ol' Spies, and send them off to do disreputable things.
And rake it in... :p

I remember a discussion on an other thread about something which could interest you. Basically, it was pointing the fact that an AI needs to know your power for the purpose of deciding if it will atatck you (or not). Not seeing it would result in more DOW by the AI, since they basically blind-rush.

If you remove all espionnage, I think it would be wiser to put back again the demographics visible by all and everyone.

Some games I use espionage and some I just ignore it. At noble or prince it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference. At higher levels I'm fairly sure it would make a big difference.

How about just disabling the spy unit. Passive missions would still be effective but no-one would be able to perform active missions. Seems easier than messin' with Alphabet (unless, of course, you are a big fan of beef jerky)

The best option, would be for Espionage to be an option, when disabled demographics go back to normal, and spies function like they do in Warlords. I like the spies, and the unit graphic for the medieval spy is cool. But it would be nice to be able to disable espionage now and then.

Beef jerky and apostrophies for this New Yorker lol
One can't really "ignore" Espionage in this expansion. Your rivals certainly aren't...
Consider. You have zero (0) Spies and no counterintelligence effort, but are ahead in Techs. I, as your rival, am behind BECAUSE I'm invested in Espionage against you. I am going to steal your Techs, because you're being complacent. And I will very possibly win as a result.
You know what would be a Holy-Crap-Useful-And-Informative tool?
Endgame, when going through the stats, if you could see how many Techs were stolen, and how many Spy missions were pulled on you.

Counterespionage missions are easy, and takes no micromanaging. Just like constructing the espionage buildings (courthouse, etc.)

Settle a GSpy early (+12:espionage:/turn). That will keep your water clean;)

Against that one (1) Civ, sure. What about the other thirteen? How many GS's do we have? lol

Endgame, This is for Firaxis Decision-makers
Wouldn't it be most excellent to make this part of the endgame stats?
It's just a number, doesn't require much key-touching time...

Did you miss the "settle" part of the advice or do you not understand that settling increases the espionage-per-turn of a city by 12, which can be assigned to ANY civ?

No offense, but I feel a warm feeling inside of me every time somebody discovers he cannot, in fact, turn off espionage.
