Hello and welcome to the third instalment of the Noble's Club succession game series!!!!
Here is a link explaining The Epic of Gilgamesh. This game is not based on the poem. I include this for reasons of pure interest.
This is a series of games in association with the Noble's Club, the aims of which is to educate and entertain.
Unfortunatly our last game - NCSG Lincoln - which was split into two teams resulted in team one bailing on a situation that simply stopped being fun (this is a game after all)! Even in defeat I feel we have learned a thing or two, mainly that we should not split our efforts on multiple strats at once and you need to focus as you move up the levels. Anyway.
This game has a full roster but feel free to start your own threads using the save. Just ensure you call it NCSG - The Epic of Gilgamesh 2 etc.
On to our new game!!
Heres the settings
You may notice Monarch instead of Noble - SG result in a much higher standard of play.
Our leader
His UU is the Vulture, a replacement axe with strength 6 rather than 5, but the melee bonous is reduced from 50% to 25%
His UB is the Ziggurat, a replacement courthouse that is opened by priesthood rather than CoL. Also its 30 hammers cheaper than a normal courthouse at 90 rather than 120 hammers.
EDIT: I can't belive I forgot the starting screen!!! Doh! Here it is
EDIT 2: We're playing 24/48 - with some give and take as I know life is a busy old thing (mine is). 20 turns in the BC and 10 in the AD.
Checking in.
The only question is REX peacefully, or war with the neighbors
This is the starting location, btw:
Looks very average, but I'm guessing we'll have some nice land around us. In place looks decent, if we choose it, we could go with worker and tech off AH -> Mining
My guess is we'll get a strat resourse in the BFC with this start.
We start with agriculture and the wheel. I think.
I'd consider mining> bronze> AH. Those floods can feed us for the time being. Also bronze sooner means leaveraging the UU sooner to.
In place looks like a stong production capital.
Given the UB I think we could try for the oracle. Other early wonders if any? I suggest focusing on REXing more than early wonders here. CRE and the UB go hand in hand for some sweet land grabbing. What do you reckon?
I've edited the OP with some details I forgot.....
I am here. I kind of like the idea of Mining -> BW and looking for Copper. We can even mine the pigs.
Oracle also sounds good, but if we find stone and have time, the GW would be strong. Fast UB + GW = lots of early espy points. We can play that by ear though, I agree the basic plan is land-grab ASAP.
I can't see a reason to move peering into the fog. Its a shame the hut is on the hill I want to move the warrior to. If we are agreed on settling in place I'll pop the hut after we settle (can't get a tech if you have no city right?).
GW? I think I suggest that every game I ever play!!! If we get stone we'll see what we think.
So my plan is, settle in place, build a worker, tech mining> bronze.
After doing some reading and thinking I reckon my currency idea is rubbish. Getting math before oracle would be tricky to say the least. Back to the drawing board.
Got it.
Stone site may be the desert tile that our warrior is standing on, or south to grab corn.
I think priesthood makes sense (we could go through polytheism to keep the Great Library as an option)
Here we go, played 21 turns (you were 1 short grandad )
Turn 19 (BC 3525):
Nothing to change at this point.
Turn 23 (BC 3425):
Worker => Warrior, start mining pigs (most balanced tile at 2F3H1C)
Warrior whacks a lion and takes woodsman I
Turn 29 (BC 3275):
Warrior finishes healing and continues SE
IBT: Whack another lion, no damage
Turn 30 (BC 3250):
Worker starts farming FP tile, we work the pig/hill.
Turn 32 (BC 3200):
Find a copper source in SE near some seafood and wheat.
Turn 33 (BC 3175):
AH => Mysticism (Towards Priesthood)
The only visible horses are in the south, here:
Turn 34 (BC 3150):
Warrior => Warrior
Send the new guy North to check out the coast there.
Turn 36 (BC 3100):
SE Warrior pops hut for a warrior, they will both explore the SE together.
The land seems to be a snaky-continents-like shape, with plenty of seafood (see overview map at the end)
IBT: Northern warrior whacks a wolf for .4 damage
also, Hinduism FIADL
Turn 38 (BC 3050):
I spot a lime-green border to the SE, guess who??
Everyones favorite Psycho, Monty!
Turn 39 (BC 3025):
Warrior => Warrior (grow, then switch out for a settler, IMOP)
Finish scouting the SE, pop a hut for experience, and formally greet the insane Aztec, who founded Buddhism.
Turn 40 (BC 3000):
Give the warrior that popped the hut woodsman II and start the SE warriors back north.
This is the known world with resource tags (and a minimized interface, which I just figured out how to use..):

Things looking decently. We want to be expanding south to cut Monty off if it's a contiguous continent.
Not sure why we want to sacrifice 3 hammers for 1 food (working the unfarmed FP vs the mined pigs) although it may have just been an automatic citizen assigning. Working the pigs lets us grow in 6 and make the warrior in 5.
Lots of calendar happiness resources, but somewhat concerning that there is nothing immediately useful. Perhaps there is fur or silver to the north.
Ah cool. There may actually be a MM opportunity in the next turnset, to eek a bit more food out when the second farm finishes. Ideally, the warrior finishes just as the city grows, but if all else fails, we can plug the hammers into something else.
Also, we are kind of freshwater poor other than that river that runs past our capital. We'll have to run the farms all the way to the east (since we want that copper for our vultures), unless of course we find iron nearby.
From what we can see on the east end of the continent, the jungle belt isn't very thick either, which is a good thing.
Got it, will play right away. Looks like we have reasonable land, but not many rivers, thats for sure. I will explore more if I can, but which city do we want to settle first? The copper is so far away, but we get our UB pretty early. Editing this post for my set, just played it. I like our position.
OK Here we go! I promise no Wonder-Whoring Flyers this game, LOL. Its a LOT easier to play my own "style" by myself, so I will work on playing more solid.

------------------------------------------------ Turn 40/750 (3000 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:08:08]
I did micro-manage that tile as suggested, moving off the unimproved FP onto the Mined Pigs. I also started heading some warriors to the South. If we can cut Monty off, we can settle the Eastern land without much worry, especially if we get our UB cranking.
Myst come in, I start Poly, for an eye on Aesthetics/Lit later. Another reason for this choice is that Monty often goes for Med, so maybe we can force him to give it to us in a war later, or trade to him if we want to keep the peace (yeah, right, LOL)
Turn 42/750 (2950 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:12:07] Research begun: Polytheism (16 Turns) While defending in the wild near Uruk, Warrior (0.92/2) defeats Barbarian Lion (Prob Victory: 72.8%)
Our warrior fogbusters get some nice XP in our round. NOTE, no barbs will come for our cities until we have 3 settled. They will appear, but NOT attack us until our 3rd city is down. We should have plenty of Wood II warriors by then, and maybe we can get a few Wood III to promote to Vultures or Spears to heal our stacks, and even attach GG's too. Wood III + Medic III is so strong.
Turn 43/750 (2925 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:12:43] While defending in the wild, Warrior (0.42/2) defeats Barbarian Lion (Prob Victory: 45.8%)
Turn 47/750 (2825 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:15:31] While defending in the wild, Warrior (0.64/2) defeats Barbarian Bear (Prob Victory: 75.5%)
Turn 48/750 (2800 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:15:52] While defending in the wild, Warrior (2.00/2) defeats Barbarian Panther (Prob Victory: 99.7%)
Turn 49/750 (2775 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:17:01] A Farm was built near Uruk While defending in the wild, Warrior (1.22/2) defeats Barbarian Panther (Prob Victory: 99.7%)
I start a barracks here, intending to stick a settler in when we hit pop 4. With the 2 farms, we can 2-pop whip settlers, and grow back fairly quickly. I would like to get to 5 pop if possible, but we need a settler out.
One of the scouts confirms the question of who is on our landmass. Monty is indeed here, but since we havent seen any other AI units, I suspect its just us.
Spoiler:
Turn 53/750 (2675 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:19:26] Uruk begins: Settler (14 turns) While defending in the wild near Uruk, Warrior loses to Barbarian Bear (0.15/3) (Prob Victory: 35.5%) While defending in the wild, Warrior (1.64/2) defeats Barbarian Panther (Prob Victory: 93.6%)
Turn 54/750 (2650 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:20:31] Warrior promoted: Woodsman II While defending in the wild, Warrior (1.52/2) defeats Barbarian Wolf (Prob Victory: 100.0%)
Turn 55/750 (2625 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:20:51] While defending in the wild, Warrior (0.08/2) defeats Barbarian Bear (Prob Victory: 89.3%)
Poly in, heading for Priest to open our UB and the Oracle. There is marble down by Monty too, but I doubt we can get there before we need to build the Oracle if we want to. Its getting late already. Perhaps we should start the Oracle as soon as the Barracks is done, then 2-pop whip Settlers into it at 5 pop. I chopped 1 forest into our settler, and then started mining the Plains hill, so we can Pasture our Pig hill later and still have mines to work.
Turn 57/750 (2575 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:22:54] Research begun: Priesthood (9 Turns) Civics Change: NCSG III - Gilgamesh(Sumeria) from 'Tribalism' to 'Slavery'
Ready to whip the settler, but we arent in Slavery? I dont know why folks dont go into Slavery the instant BW comes in. You cannot get that Slave Event without a certain number of pop, I think its 6. I dont know, I never ever delay the revolt, because I always tech BW very early, and I have never had a problem with the event. I can understand it with SPI leaders somewhat, I guess, but even then, with a small city, I dont think you can get the event. Its no biggie though, Settler will be out the turn after my set ends, so we can discuss his destination.
Turn 58/750 (2550 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:23:44] While defending in the wild, Warrior (2.00/2) defeats Barbarian Panther (Prob Victory: 99.4%) Attitude Change: Montezuma(Aztec) towards NCSG III - Gilgamesh(Sumeria), from 'Cautious' to 'Annoyed'
Turn 59/750 (2525 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:24:28] Warrior promoted: Woodsman I While defending in the wild, Warrior (0.44/2) defeats Barbarian Panther (Prob Victory: 99.4%) Attitude Change: Montezuma(Aztec) towards NCSG III - Gilgamesh(Sumeria), from 'Annoyed' to 'Cautious'
Turn 60/750 (2500 BC) [09-Jun-2008 11:33:30]
Thats it. Here is our Cap, I whipped the settler, we have a few Wood II units, I did lose a warrior somewhere, but just the one, because I have avoided the bears, mostly. There is also a pic of the new land I explored, not much, because warriors move so slow and they were far away when I started. We have a couple Wood II warriors in there now though, so next round should show us a lot more of this continent.
I suggest the settler go south right away, and try to cut Monty off. The Horse-Corn city looks good, putting it 1S of the other sign gets the Dye as well. I do think we should tech IW ASAP, I suspect we have Iron closer than Copper. I also dont think we should mess with Monty, if not a pure Rush, then we should push for Cats and wipe him before he gets too big. He can be a real PITA. Early IW is also good for clearing out Jungles, making his UU less of a problem in the cities near him. If he can walk them right up to our city in the Jungle, they are a royal pain.
Spoiler:
Capitol:
Jungle areas, looks good, another river, some Calendar resources:
Horse city 1S of the sign sounds good to me. Also a good production site would be some where down by the sugar wheat site. Capturing the spices would be good too - maybe 2 N of marble.
I like the sound of the Oracle (I haven't built it for ages). Worth a crack with overflow. What would we take? MC?
