Hi there,

I've a simple question. May I open a thread in another language (only one for each language in OT) as long as we provide a translation into English of every post in spoilers? In order to make sure that no one cheats, a native speaker should take care of. So, is this allowed?

I'm guessing so he can communicate w/ people who don't speak English.

Maybe they shouldn't do that on an english speaking forum, but on a *insert language here* speaking forum.

No.

If its going to be translated into english, then what's the point?

Well, everybody would be able to discuss in his mother language, what would improve our arguments.

The language might not be one known to any of the moderators and if participants start reporting posts, who's to handle it?

Others not knowing the language in question will also have a barrier in participating.

As we are fairly international and cross-cultural, we will have to operate on some basis of commonality (in this case, language), otherwise this site will be inoperable.

Well, that's why I think that an english transalation of every post written in spoilers must be added. If we do so, we allow "moderationbility" of these threads.

If we do as I say (native speakers taking special care of these threads by reporting and mandatory addition of an english translation in spoilers), then I don't see why it's not allowed. In fact, it could be taken as a thread in english with a translation into language X.

C'mon, I'm just asking if we can open just one thread for each language in OT with these characteristics, not a total polyglotization of the forums.

Hi ,

hmmm , i speak french , english , german , dutch , hebrew and some arabic , with notes on spanish and japanese , if help is needed in translation ill be happy to help

Have a nice day :)

With, what, 7000 languages in the world, this idea is simply ridiculous.

If the mods don't speak that language then there's no way of knowing whether the translation into English is accurate. What they think is a political discussion could well be 'Which is the smelliest moderator' or something.

Hi ,

no that many , but think of french , german , italian , dutch and spanish for example , that would really make it nice :)

Have a nice multilingual day :)

Do you really think that someone is going to open a thread in Ainu or Coptic?

That's why I say that at least a motherspeaker of that language should take care of the thread: if the translation doesn't show what i meant in the post, then the post got reported immediatly. Just like any other post that doesnt fit the rules and gets reported.

Have you heard about Perfection? I think he would :)

And how are we to trust or verify this source who'll translate the foreign language piece in question, or report it as the case may be?

Hi ,

well i could help with that :mischief:

look at some other civ sites , there are a few in german and in spanish , or english speaking sites have a small sub forum in those languages

you would need mods who speak that language or people who will be able to check it or read / post in it

why not run the experiment and if it does fail close it , ...

Well, that would set precedent and might well lead to a lot of whining. Why did you close my Catalan-thread? Why can't I open a Mongolian-thread when he can open an Italian-thread? etc.

Problem is, TF would probably have to appoint a lot more mods. Seeing as this is a Civ forum, hiring a truckload of new moderators just to babysit one thread each in Off-Topic doesn't seem like a worthwhile endeavour.

Hi ,

well i could keep an eye on them , since we dont have mongolian players yet , .... ;)

lets try it as an experiment , as new people come mods can be appointed , how did the other mods come to be , cause they came , posted and then became mods , gradually new people can be made mods

start with the languages that will have posters , mainly dutch , french , german , italian and spanish and see what happens ,....

off topic why not , but i was thinking more of civ in spanish forums , civ in dutch forums etc , ....

we dont know if we dont try it , ...

there are so many players in those countries who lack a decent site in those languages , and there are many people here who dont post simply because english is not the first tongue or they are afraid to write in errors , ...

Have a nice day :)

What about adding the actual translation in the report or, if it's too long, and idea of what is actually meant there?
