You know how you can use your ship to stop all international trade in the space?

Well, to block a city from importing/exporting will one ship do enough to block it, or do you need 3 ships, to block every tile that the city touches?

Hi ,

do it with me and i send a privateer :mischief:

cause if its crucial to a nation like horses or oil , your one unit is likely to be taken out asap by the AI or by a human player

by using a few you will enhance your power thus making sure of having a good blockade and when done in the right place like two or thee cities it can be a nice income also , .... ( !! )

play with privateers a bit , open world builder in a game and give yourself a few , see what happens , experience is the best learning curve :mischief:

Have a nice blockade day :)

If you don't, the AI will probably suicide its 30 caravels it likes to mass into your blockade. That sucks, so make a few.

30 caravels? Just to take out one ship? That seems like overkill. I've seen just one caravel take out my ships before. They have a strength of 6 and caravels have a strength of 5.

Hi ,

well it depends on the promotions and on the bonus , so be ready to expect that , also its nice to keep a piket line , a group nearby that can send help in the form of an other unit , a few bases or stacks around the globe never hurt to get to a hot spot rather quickly :nuke:

make sure if you have a blockade you can back it up ( ! ) it never hurts and it can cripple an E completely , the AI might swap land for sea units building while you go in true the front door cause they are distracted from the blockade :D

Have a nice evening :)

well having such a large blockade for just one city seems self-defeating. The money your spending on those ships per turn just to keep the blockade going is more than the money your forcing out of your opponent. I would put three ships tops.

Hi ,

one city only  , its better to post more ships then or make them cover several cities , money talks and BS walks , .... :D

as for the overall picture , if goods cant come in you will be likely to see that the AI offers you a deal for the resources the blockade is holding out on , ...

if you use privateers almost always you will see AI ships come to fight them , now each time you defeat such a unit , you get one point for a great general , ....

and in that sense its worth its money every turn , .... :mischief:

Have a nice sleepy night :)

Of coarse. You wouldn't just blockade one city. But I'm saying, one ship per city to blockade, right? And when you say have more for backup, do you mean more in that same square, or more in surrounding tiles? Of coarse, if you have them in surrounding tiles, your stopping them from getting production/commerce from that tile.

Hi ,

no look for a spot where one ship can reach several cities , put it one blockade , number two ship same spot is on guard , number three has medic for example and is on blockade also , number four goes in and out of the stack to raid ships or fishing boats , a stack like this is worth its money :)

then within reach of that pile is an other one ( max tiles a turn minus one ) that does the same or make stacks that border each other at the blockade range

now remember , why minus one turn , if you loose your blockade ship you want it to be replaced the same turn , and you have to wait an other turn if you cant designate it to blockade the same turn , thats a turn of less money , ... :(

now what you can also do if you are sure about naval control is indeed to just put a ship in each water tile , ... :D
but if you do that , be sure the AI will come after your ships , and this you want to exploit , while they are building ships you come in over land , start to pick on those units in the city , ...

a lot of people forget sea patrol , so play the RFC mod as Japan for example or try a few maps where you are on an island , ...

Have a nice tuesday :)

Yes it is overkill, but it's the AI. Caravels have a strength of three not five though.

If you have a good tech lead and are on a watery map then Privateers are devastating to the AI.

In my last game I was able to produce a Privateer every turn from my Military city and it came out with a shiny 2-3 promo's. I not only raided their seafood but was able to starve all of their cities down to extremely low pop (archipelago there is just NO land). And since I had like 7 cities blockaded I was making in upwards of 14 gold per turn! Even if the AI suicided like 6 Caravels to take down my blockade it was so easy to replace I just laughed every time they did it.

One ship blocking more than one cities? How is that possible? Could you send me a pic giving an example of this?

oldschooler, silly question, but are you using the blockade button? its the button with the cannon on it? once you see the space the ship can blockade, you'll be able to create positions where you can blockade multiple cities with one ship....if you got the guts lol
and yes, blockaded ships are AI's No1 targets, they will take you downnnnn haha..
even if it takes 12 caravals to take down a 2 ship blockade, they'll do it, and i dont blame them either....not everyone has shipyards that can produce one ship a turn on marathon =p..and some maps are huuge so resupply is a big problem!

Galleons have a base str of 4, privateers 6, frigates 8.

Caravels have a base strength of 3. When the AI sees privateers or frigates at war, it if doesn't have access to such ships itself it will respond by spamming caravels. Since privateers and frigates have good odds against caravels, the AI will need a LOT of them before they brave actually attacking a stack of ships. However, it WILL use them to overrun a single privateer eventually. Hence the stack.

30 may have been an exaggeration, but not much of one. I wouldn't be surprised if blockaded AIs actually wind up making more than that if pressed long enough.
