I had to restore my computer lately because of viruses which meant that Civ 4 and BtS were uninstalled.

So I decide to reinstall Civ 4. No problems. Then I decide to install BTS.

I get these:

"BTS is looking for updated versions of Direct something...."

then

"There is a newer version of Civ 4 available. Now downloading latest patch..."

then

"The patch failed to install. Aborting installation!"

How can I not have the latest patch of Civ 4 when this message shows up in the Civ4 vanilla game?:

I have seen a total of maybe 6-8 threads on the forum with the same problem as me but most responses consist of "install 1.74" which I already did on the civ 4 game as seen in the previous screenshot, which was taken today (June 19 2008).

By the way, I emailed Firaxis and got no human response. Seems like they don't care about the people who play their game.

did you install the 1.74 patch directly onto the unpatched civ version?
there have been reports of this failing and most people managed to patch it correctly going from 1.00 to 1.61 to 1.74 - note those failed patches screw with the ingame updater to make sure your game is correctly patched please post the about this build screen :)

I trust you emailed take2 and not firaxis, right? take2 is the publisher (and owner of) firaxis - they do the tech support, though they suck at it.

take 2 has a support page (just look on their homepage) with a support request form - use that but don't hold your breath.
as for uninstalling: you'll need to uninstall Civ completely and patch again :(

use this as a guide - note I wrote it for a complete BtS install - so just do those things that apply to Civ4 aka Vanilla - and patch to 1.74 afterwards.

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.13 (download it fresh from here).

*gets down on knees and worships ori*

thank you so much for that information. I had Civ4, warlords, and BTS and I uninstalled them so I could actually graduate university - but BTS never really left my comp. Later when I tried to reinstall the games my comp thought BTS was still on it and wouldn't let me install it. Uninstalling it didn't get rid of it completely. The solution was manually deleting it from the installshield

Im having similar issues with BTS not installing.. ..to be straight to the point, i duffed up the uninstall (or in my opinion it was vista being so lame) and now i cannot re-install bts.

I have tried looking everywhere for a solution.. ..does ORI's solution work for vista? Im having no luck. Is there anyone out there who can help me figure this out??

I have removed all the folders including all the registry entries i can find yet the error still comes up that i have a version already installed. What have i misseD?

I dont know much about computers and i have this same problem i have the civ4 gold edition so do i need to use the vanilla patch or the one from warlords

unfortunately the reason why some versions of Gold Edition do not allow you to install Beyond the Sword is a typo they made in the registry keys. It is relatively easy to change - however registry editing can make your computer unbootable if you make a mistake.
As for the editing itself look here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=268462
if in doubt: ask - don't go editing the registry without knowing what exactly you are doing ;)

I tried updating to 3.19 about 2 weeks ago and everything went wrong! So I would like to wipe all - Civ, Warlords, BTS - and start form scratch with my original disks. After disk install what order do I need to install patches? Do I need intermediate patches or can I go straight to 1.74, 2.13, 3.19? Do I download and install manually or use the updater from the game itself?
Can anyone guide the way?

Thanks
