welcome to my next RPC game. These are meant to be educational as well as fun! The last game, FDR's dream, was a complete success which had little competition from the AI. This time I hope to ramp up the difficulty with some tough RPC rules although we shall see how difficult this makes the game!

Ragnar is stuck in an Ice-Age world. Worse yet, his starting location has no grains, and thus no alcohol. Plenty of seafood and Beef, no hootch! The Viking people are very upset, frequently calling for Ragnar's horned head on a stake, and he certainly cannot let that happen. So our unbathed and slobbering leader has gotta find something for his people to consume, and fairly quickly at that! But the thing abount Vikings is that they go through alot of booze, and there is never enough, so Ragnar has gottcontinually find more. In fact, he has gotta control every single rice (sake), wheat (meade), corn (whiskey), and wine (vikings will drink anything, even that refined watered down crap) by the end of the game.

One other thing, Viking refuse to educate themselve as this takes away time from drinking, which is truely the only worthwhile thing in a Viking's life. So Ragnar can never build libraries/universities/observatories/labs. In addition, Ragnar cannot run scientist specialists, ever, and this includes representation (can you imagine the chaos of a slew of drunken vikings in congress or parliment. All other specialists are fair game. The ONLY exception here is if a captured enemy city retains an observatory (can you imagine drunken vikings looking at the starts!)

A wise poster once said that a CE needs only cottages and a granery. I plan to try this to excess. We shall to cottage everything we can to get enough commerce to eliminate the need of research via science.

So, onto the game

Settings

Ice-Age standard map
High water level, narrow continent for soem Viking naval action.
Monarch difficulty/Marathon speed
All victories open.

Rules

1) We must control EVERY rice/wheat/corn/wine resource in the game. And not by trade either.
2) No scientist specialists, ever. This includes the Great Library and any wonders that produce GSPs. If we accidently pop a GS from captured AI cities, please refer to Mao's atheist code for an explaination of what happens!
3) No science buildings (libraries/universities/observatories/labs). Monestaries are OK as the Vikings have heard rumors that the monks hide alcohol there, so I fear banning them is out of the question.
4) We plan to run a strong CE game, similar to the Persians in space although the Vikings are more than willing to work up a sweat to get their Booze. So watermills, windmills, lumbermills, and wokshops are OK.
5) Any grains corps are out. If the Vikings have no oil, they cannot found standard oil and are more than willing to walk rather give up the drink! The mining corps and Aluminum Inc are fine.

So here is our besotted leader

And the start

I think settling in palce makes the most sense.

Banning labs?? How are they supposed to make advanced alcohol then? I just don't think this is fair... As such by the timeyou get labs you should be allowed to build both labs and to build labs you obviously need observatiries.. Although you shouldn't build the obsorvatories without the ability to build labs...

I thought of this, but Ragnar would get nothing done. A bunch of drunks staring gawkingly at the stars, I don't think so.

I actually don't drink acholol though.

Anyway, settle in place, and try for Great Lighthouse. The Vikings shall need that lighthouse to navigate, perhaps it should be pointed inland as well so the drunks can navigate home?

Took a look with Worldbuilder, spoilers galore

Spoiler :

Unless I counted incorrectly, I believe there are ten resources that must be controlled.

1. Four wheat (three of which are on the homeland)
2. Four wine
3. Two rice
4. One corn (on the homeland)

Also, we have a isolated start. Well, we will soon once Saladin is destroyed :D

One question: No Ethanol corp? Vikings drink anything, isn't it ? ;) ( BTW what is the problem with Wine? :gripe: )

Settle in place and get Collosus and GLH...

Nothing wrong with wine (which I what I prefer). It is a rather refined alcohol beverage as opposed to hard liquor or Meade that can floor your standard Viking Oaf. Still, alcohol is alcohol and Ragnar promises to treat it with respect, right up to his falling unconsious.

While the idea of ehtanol corp sounds OK, Ragnar fears his countrymen would be ripping the machines apart once you poured the oiled rice/corn in thus destroying it. Best to be safe and find/steal the needed black stuff. Real oil is just liquid metal to a Viking, and they know what to do with metals

No Universities? Drunken scholars is a tradition in most universities I know. Although I guess you've got to build libraries to get them, thats not on.

Heh, Mad, that's a funny idea. You are going to need lots of cities to cover that goal. You need to control every source, not just the ones currently in use (meaning almost entire world must be settled), right?

Oh, and I would be delighted if you enabled Grid, TileYield and ResourceMarkers on the screenie.

Cheers!

Instead of ethanol corp, Ragnar needs to found General Cereal Mills, then promptly rename it "Not-so-civilized spirits, inc". After all, to vikings, alcohol is like food. And it certainly promotes the growth of the population on those long winter nights.

I altered the starting screenshot.

Thanks.

Settling in place seems like the only reasonable thing to do;
Freshwater from inland lake and availability to work said lake as a 3F3C tile once Trading Post is built,
Only place to grab 3 Seafood,
Plains Hill for +1:hammers: and +25% defense bonus.

Suscribed

Here's a thought...Snaaty used to always move his settler inland if he got a coastal start like this.

Advantages:

-Central capital that helps cut down maintenace and benefits more from bureaucracy
-Leaves the coastal spot for a surefire gpfarm
-Closer to an opponent for rushing and/or denying them territory

Disadvantages:

-Costs early turns
-Risks losing GLH, which can be powerful
-Might not find a good inland spot

settle in place and have the capital as a GP farm or a production centre.
getting GLH and maybe collosus up need to be priorites so a quick start is needed

yeah, but ragnar starts with fishing so he can get the capital up and running instantly

not a bad start, and this sounds like it will be fun to watch.

small nitpick: Mead (no e on the end) is made from honey not wheat, wheat (and barley and rye) are generally used to make beer and in some cases whiskey or vodka.

also, you forgot sugar cane... how can you forget sugar cane, i know you're on an ice age map so there is a good chance that you wont see it, but c'mon, i mean what would the world be like without RUM!?

^ Agree. With fishing and financial, a coastal start is a great starting point. With a lake, that's even better. You can always move your palace inwards to reduce maintenance and turn the old capital into a GP farm

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo, Not another GLH game

^^You have a Fin leader with Fishing that starts in a coastal plains hill with a lake, 3 seafood and a cow but no river, with no libraries because of the RPC rules and you don't want to make GLH ( and Collosus if you have time ) ? :crazyeye:
