OK guys, here it is, another water leader with a solid UU. I requested some special features this map, but I dont want to give away too much. I will tell you that rolo used the new Tectonics format, but he assures me we will be able to have both some Barb lands and AIs that arent reachable pre-Optics.

So here he is, our latest Fearless Leader:

And the start:

Here are his UU and UB, both solid, especially beneficial on water maps:
Spoiler :

And here is the standard cut and paste of our Club Doctrine:

There are no hard and fast rules here, fun and learning are our primary goals, but we do request that you update your progress at various points in the game, using the Spoiler feature of the boards.

Tentative posting updates are suggested at:

4000 BC (starting thoughts, no spoiler required for that discussion)
1000 BC or so (how you decided to progress up the early tech/build paths, which AIs you have met, etc)
500 AD or so (after establishing some cities and a possible plan of action)
1200 AD or so (mid-game, Lib race, wars or peace, or whichever happened or didnt, met other continent if applicable, etc)
1600 AD (or when you have decided on a course of action and a specific victory condition)
End of game (Victory!!! or defeat, no shame in losing, especially if you tried a higher level. Learning is what we focus on, not fastest win or biggest empire)

Remember, these are only guidelines. What we really want are your thoughts as the game goes on, so if your strats dont fall into line with those dates, feel free to adjust your reports accordingly.

We also welcome players to ask for specific game advice, as we have a number or stronger players who lurk and help out with solid tips, and of course, we help each other. Replies to specific questions should also be in spoilers, with a simple "@" in front of the person the answer is directed towards.

Once again, special recognition goes out to r_rolo1, our Map Maker, who sets these up for us (so I can play without peeking, heh, the WB needs to be modified) and also to Krick19, who came up with the idea of running a series like this for the less confident players. It is our goal to get folks to play and post without feeling self-conscious about being a "n00b" or asking dumb things. There are NO stupid questions! Learning this game is a process, not an event.

The WB-save is attached (zipped, they are bigger than standard saves). To play, simply download and unzip it into your BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Start the game, and load your favorite MOD (if you use one, if not, I suggest checking out the BUG MOD), select "Play Scenario", and look for "NC IX - Joao".This allows you to play with your favorite MOD at the Level and Speed of your choice. From Quick Warlord to Marathon Prince, all are welcome! We stuck with the name "Nobles Club" because it has a cool ring to it.

Also, it should be noted that although this is a "pre-Monarch" oriented series, you can play it at levels above Prince, but the AIs will NOT get their full bonus techs. The main difference is Archery, which the AI gets for free at Monarch and above. The main affects of this are in the AIs starting units (warriors instead of archers) and a tad "slower" AI, since they now have to tech Archery themselves.

In addition, because of the variations of using the Scenario menu, your starting Warrior may not be in exactly the same spot as the one shown.

On to the game!

excellent, i have been meaning to hop on one of these and see if i can win on prince, iv also wanted to try a tectonics map, seems like fun, should start in a few days.

One of my favorite leaders.
Not going to play emperor like I did in the De Gaulle game. There was a good reason that I didn't finish my report there

No worries rolo, I figured it was a tall order. Personally, I like it better this way, but I am a GLH addict (may just be sending my settler on a walkabout to find the shore, heh).

Nice! Read the De Gaulle topic and got interested in this, so I'll be trying out this one. For fun and learning, hopefully!

The only thing I like about Joao is his music and his hat

i've wanted to play a joao game that could be compared for a while now, he has a really interesting trait combo that imo is rather underestimated. i think both imperialistic and expansive have the ability to be phenominally powerful on thier own and when combined can provide for both an interesting rexing experience and then provide for some good warring opportunities if the extra GG's are capitalized on.

this start looks fairly solid too, pity portugal dosnt start with agriculture.

anyways, i'll pick this up when I get home after this weekend.

Am I allowed to play a test game so I dont embarass myself? (Again)

as far as i'm concerned you're allowed to do anything you want to, nothing says you have to report any unsuccessful games or even play it only once before reporting, the whole idea is that you learn to be a better player. granted part of that is going to come from having people point out your mistakes and/or where you could do things that would better optimize your play, so in some context it may be better to embarass yourself, but its up to you.

granted I don't post the majority of the games that I pull off this forum for much the same reason, embarasment.

Mkay. Sounds good. Due to a previous collapse in PYL I'm reluctant to do this sort of thing. But I know if I'm ever going to be a better player, someone will have to identify and correct my mistakes, whether it be me or someone else on this forum.

I often don't post blown games because 1) I blew them pretty early when it happens usually and 2) I know, usually quite rapidly, where I went wrong.

There's nothing wrong with doing so though and looking for feedback, especially if you lost and can't get a handle on where the game turned against your favor.

Either way, anything goes. If you want to run test games beforehand, all the better for you if you have time to. Nobody minds replays of games on the forums for the games in this subforum, so do as you like, just be sure to have fun ;). That's the only unacceptable thing to fail at.

I'm not too bothered about not bieng right on the coast, I'm going to avoid a GLH/Colosus combo kind went that route with the NC Hannibal game. I'm kinda hoping we have a fair amount of land to settle before eploring via galleys/carracks as Joao has some nice bonus's for rexing. I'll probably settle in place, capital looks nice, irrigated wheat and corn :), plenty of grassland :) but not mush production :(.

I'm going to start playing later today, Prince/Epic. I'm planning to move up to monarch sson but thought I'd stick with prince this game as I still havn't played much with the new patch.

Noob question, is it all right to read other peoples spoilers up to the point where you've played yourself in your game? I know you say that anything goes, but I don't want to "cheat" or anything ^^

Monarch/Epic (+AggAI, Choose Religions, No Vassals)

4000BC - 800BC (128 turns)- Part One: Settlement and Bankruptcy.
Spoiler :

I sort of like the capital spot- other than the lakes. But I can work them early for commerce if need be (need will be). No plains hills is annoyting so expansive is pretty much wasted at te start. It might be faster to grow to size 2 and then worker but I am not gonna do the math.

My very limited experience with tectonics put me on a 3 city size island with hatshepsut at emperor. When I say with Hastshepsut, I mean SHARING the island with her. Oh, and no copper, horses, ellies or iron. Fantastic. The other AIs were like this too- hope this is not a normal thing.

Walkin about, scoping out the island, poppin hu- WHOA, HOLY ****

153 at EPIC? Christ, nice one.

I meet Isabella fairly late (t27) which means REX REX REX REX.

City two: Oporto.

City three: Guimarães

City four: Coimbra

City five: Évora comes later compared to the gaps between the other foundings/

City six: Lagos puts me at -7 (30%) but I just squeezed in writing.

The most important factor to REXing is how far you're willing to go. I went this far and was forced to stop:

City seven: Braga puts me at -4 (0%) uh-oh. But that silver should get me at least one more city, right? I've seen futurehermit do 10 cities before 1AD on monarch, I am pretty sure he didn't have gold there.

Please note that I have roughly settled 1 city/18 turns, and the AIs only have 3 at this point. I've forgotten to give them their starting crap, damnit.

How did I manage that? Well, IMP leaders can 2 pop whip settlers after a single turn of production- and they can start reasonably timed settlers much earlier. Mine was an 11 turn settler at pop 3 with one chop. You can also strip your capital of defence to escort a settler which I did for about 5/7 cities. Workers are also very important- I made aobut 4 in the capital and some others come from other cities.

City eight: I have the settler in position but something bad happens. I converted to Buddhism to give me a turn to think about it, and I am going to go Christian ASAP.

HOW TO DEAL WITH BANKRUPTCY

Take a look at the financial advisor- eliminate unit costs as much as possible. I disbanded some useless warriors.

If you're still in debt, look at your coastal and cottaged cities. You have started laying down cottages, right? Focus on scientist specialists, by the way because you need to get to currency, preferrably through Alphabet but if you're an idiot like me, go through Maths. In this case, by doing very little, I managed to get to flatline with some angry citizens- just what we always wanted. I guess I'll complete this game to try and show how to roll over a game after a massive early REX. I hope I'll roll over it anyway. Oh, and if this happens to you, thank your lucky stars you got that 150 gold hut earlier.
