Welcome to the Mad Scientist latest RPC game, Gandhi the Pacifist. These games ar emeant to be entertaining challenges with some sort of strategy/education aspect to them.

The Mahatma loves peace and believes the only way mankind can survive is to avoid war. This means avoiding it 100% and that means not even a defensive war is permitted. Id peace truely the answer, or is it a fool's errand destined for failure.

As the game has difficult settings, avoiding any war is extremely hard here I decided to hand-pick the AIs

Darius
Hatshetsup
Lincoln
Mansa Musa
Frederick
Elizabeth

RPC Rules

1) Gandhi can never attack any unit, including in defense.
2) Gandhi cannot build more than 1 unit per city, however that unit can be upgraded as technology advances.
3) Gandhi cannot tech research the deadend military techs (archery, harseback riding, rifling, military science, military tradition, fascism). He may get them in a trade however.
4) Gandhi cannot build any military buildings, such as barracks/stables etc.
5) Gandhi MAY build unlimited scouts/explorers/caravals. Galleons and Galleys are OK IF there is a area where he needs to transport troops or missionaries.
6) Gandhi cannot build spies or espionage buildings (courthouses are OK) and must evenly distribute eps to all leaders.
7) Civics prohibited: Police State/Vassalage/Nationhood/Slavery/Theocracy

Game conditions

Random shuffle map. We do not know what to expect here!
Marathon speed, Monarch difficulty.
Any peaceful victory is open.

And the start

Decent start, and yes we can build pastuers and use the cows.

Great Wall is a must. With only 1 unit for each city barbarians are going to be hell, and a barbarian uprising might mean the end of the game.

I'm going to shadow this one. Might teach me to find a nonmartial way to win at Civ :D

Can you build Gandhi's UB, the Mausoleum? (Which is a Jail?) I think the UB should be an exception to the rule.

Very good point I did not consider. Let's see if we need that extra happiness once we get to constitution.

Can we fogbust vs barbs at the start if we use those units to garrison cities later? Going great wall seems a bit counter-intuitive in a game where we aren't allowed to run espionage much.

I'll shadow and pretend it's "APG 2.5".

We are allowed to use scouts to fogbust. Reagrding the Great Wall which has numerous uses, I think using non-military protection is prime for gandhi. He also starts with mining AND mysticism which is the cheapest combination to tech masonry.

So I see a techpath of

Poltheism
BW
Masonry
Food tech(s)
Monotheim

I see no reason we cannot found an early religion AND build the Great Wall before the AIs.

I want an early prophet, not a spy ;).

I'm going to have to scout the surrounding land very carefully. If I can fogbust everything with scouts I will ignore the GW regardless . I'd typically go stonehenge but with philosophical ghandi can probably oracle something and use THAT for the prophet to bulb theology.

I'm thinking along the lines of settler first going for early religion, then hunting, then switching to a scout, finish settler, more scouts, etc. I'd slip in agriculture and a worker there - we seem to have 4-5 FP based on the screen shot and that should last for a bit. Earlygame will probably be the hardest part of this. If I can win an early religion, spread it, and build the AP in a different religion, it shouldn't be too hard to get one of these AIs to friendly, if not several (depends on map layout). AP diplo seems very much a viable attempt in this RPC (not to mention pretty fitting!)

Edit: Without slavery it makes sense to delay BW a bit. I'd want at least OR for chopping then.

Are you going to play this RPC with 3.17?

I have not installed it yet, but as I understand it's backwards compatible with all saves. So I'll likely install it before starting.

Question about patching to 317. How long does it take through the game, and is it normal not to see anything going on? Did the update through the game and when I try to go to another window in the game I get a message saying patching in progess. Been going about 45 minutes, just want to make sure it's not locked up.

It can take HOURS through the game. I strongly recommend downloading it separately and installing it. If you have a good connection it's less than an hour that way easily.

Edit: I've started this and I'm doing pretty well in it IMO ;).

I am doing the auto update now. Can I just quit the game without corrupting anything???

I would shadow this but, I've played more then my fair share of Gandhi pacifist games.

(long recap of one of such games)
Spoiler :

Like that one city challenge where I never build another unit beside upgrading the starting warrior. I got DoW'd on but lived. (It was Hemispheres, and I was in the middle of Buddhist Justinian's empire.

I was kind of lucky though. It was a hemispheres map, and on this map I was not coastal but surrounded by Byzantine cities. (I also culture flipped a few :P)

I did manage to found Hinduism at the beginning, but when Justinian spread Buddhism to me and Qin Shi Huang I decided to accept it. (Justinian also later founded Christianity and spread it to many cities including my city)

So Qin did end up DoW'ing on Justinian, which of course ended up with China losing about six cities including it's capital and becoming a Byzantine vassal.

But later when I seen the other continent (Which consisted of Hannibal with a fairly smaller empire but third in tech behind me and Justinian, and then Shaka, and Shaka's vassal Isabella, and Montezuma the most powerful leader on the other continent) I was alarmed. When Shaka DoW'd on me I thought I was done for. Wait, what's this? Justinian refuses to open borders with Shaka? :D I never got a single unit.

Later when Monty DoW'd on me, same thing. He was so frustrated that after I took peace, he DoW'd on Justinian and got DECIMATED. Justinian had about double the power units and was using Artillery and Infantry when Monty was invading with Rifles and Cannons....

Around 30 turns later I hear "Montezuma has been vassaled to Justinian" :P

(I won the game diplomatically btw, I got the U.N. vote and got the vote of Hannibal, Justinian I and Qin Shi Huang, running against Shaka who only got Isabella. Monty abstained)

But enough of my babbling, can't wait for this RPC! Should be pretty hard!

Hehe sounds good.

Two points; Will you be using the Mausoleum? And will you allow teching Rifling (leads to Rocketry, needed for Space Race).

I suggest a Cultural attempt...

Two good points, and my answer is I am not sure.

Rifling can be traded for, and if noone likes me enough to trade it then I don't think I'll be getting that far anyway!

The Mausoleum really depends on how much happiness we need. I am content playing an RPC without building a UB, and the Indian one is one of the weaker anyway.

I just quit the game during the in-game upgrade. The download from Civfanatics and install took about 10 minutes. Amazing.

How do you do the install? I downloaded it from here and can't figure out how to install...

I double clicked on teh folder which extracted some stuff. I thne clicked on teh icon that sort of looked like an install icon. It was automatic at that point.

Sorry for such a poor explaination, but I am no way as computer literate as most posters here.
