First of all, I would like to thank Sisuitil for creating the map for us this round. Map making can be tricky, since you want to offer a challenging game with various strategies available, especially in a series like this.

Secondly, I would like to thank OTAK for providing me an easy copy/paste for my intro. What follows is almost identical to his, heh, I just changed a few things to their proper references. So without further delay, here we go, MC Game 3!

========

The Monarchist Cookbook is a concurrent succession game series to help readers learn how to play and win at Monarch level in Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword, v3.17

This is the 3rd game of the series.

For more information or to discuss the format, please visit the Monarchist Cookbook Bullpen.

Monarchist Cookbook Game III: Hammurabi of Babylon

We will be playing Hammurabi of Babylon on Monarch difficulty, Epic Speed. The map script used for this game is the new Tectonics map, which can produce a fairly wide variety of land and sea combinations. We went for the 60% water version, and have turned off Huts and Events. All other settings are standard/random.

Spoiler starting info :
BABYLONIAN UU, UB & STARTING TECHNOLOGIES INFO:

And finally, our starting position:

Round one lasts from 4000 BC - 1500 BC.

Please play this Round and submit your Report into this thread by next Tuesday (July 8, 2008).

IMPORTANT: Please do not discuss opening strategies until after you have played and reported Round 1.

At the end of your Round, please remember to name your save with your name, game and Round # & game date (i.e. "MC3 Round 1 MyName BC-1500.CivBeyondSwordSave"). (And please don't forget to attach it to your Round report, either, lol.)

Promise I'll be playing and contributing to this one.. I was busy during the beginnings of the previous 2 and couldn't "jump in" to the middle
Organized, one of my favorites!
Save isn't here :p

OK, so educate me about the bowman. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's never played as Babylon. It sure looks like Hammi starts without a UU - after all, what good is a defensive UU to an aggressive leader? (BTW, there's nothing on the bowman in Aelf's UU Guide).

I suggest you give it a go, see if you can find a benefit of having Bowmen on this map, and post a report. :)

Round the First: 1500 BC

Spoiler :

Not much going on just yet. Without huts and events, the game feels kinda, well, uneventful.

Decided to settle in place, lacking anything that looks like a better alternative.

Tech priority was, of course, Fishing, while building a warrior timed to finish about when Fishing came in. After that, the tech path was Mining, BW, AH, Myst, Hunting, Archery, Pottery, and Sailing (which finished the turn I ended.) I set it to research IW next.

IIRC, the builds in Babylon were: 2 WBs, Worker, Warrior, Settler, Bowman, Settler, Granary (in progress).

My 2 early Warriors went exploring to the N & S, rotating counter-clockwise when they hit the end of the continent. Found Huayna to the SE, and his cultural borders already had popped out to block off the land beyond (he founded Buddhism). The Northern warrior, though, was eaten by some beasties as he was heading W. An archer from Tokugowa wandered by Babylon's border shortly thereafter. My settling was focused towards HC-- mostly because that's where the food resources are. Sadly, all the grassland they're on is cut off from fresh water, so cottages here I come.

The world as I know it:

North:
Spoiler :

South:
Spoiler :

I'll see what everybody else turns up, but I doubt I'll be in the serious running. In hindsight, I'd have pushed hard for the GLH-- all the best city sites around seem to be coastal. Also, I'd rather have explored more towards wherever Toku is, researched Sailing earlier to get a Lighthouse in Babylon, and built more Workers. Plus, I'm not the greatest of micro-managers around, so I'm sure someone will work their magic to run rings around my production.

(Also, I apologize for the lack of BUG. Something got borked in my attempts to patch up, so I re-installed the whole game. I'm waiting for BUG 3.0 to come out before I put it back in.)

Edit: Added the Save.

Check 1

Spoiler :
3950 Settled on plains hill to NW
3800 Met HC
3675 HC founds buddhism
3475 Met Toku - has a cow tile on diagnol so camp there.
3150 Steal Toku worker.
3100 Revolt to slavery
2950 Met darius
2725 Peace with toku
2325 Declare on HC - 11 warriors
2250 - 3 archers is too many. I retreat.
2125 Peace with HC
2050 Try again
2000 2 archers this time! I try. Cuzco is captured with 2 warriors left alive.
1875 Whip Rax out in Cuzco.
1825 Temporary peace with HC
1525 Met KK
1500 DoW HC again.

Summary:

 Best ball status IMO pending on both other submissions, and whether or not this warrior attack on HC works! I have fewer warriors in the 2nd screen shot, but all but 2 of them have cover! If it works we have an absurd amount of land virtually uncontested.

We also have a -3 hit with KK for declaring war on his friend and a -3 with toku for commandeering a worker. We also have a settler ready in Babylon and a couple warriors up there to deal with barbs. Both cities have a barracks, and babylon is about to get a granary. Babylon also has 2 workers - one stolen from toku the other built.

Techs are mining, BW, AG, Wheel, AH, and Pottery. We're working on writing (can probably get it off of deficit research if we win next city) and then fishing is necessary.

Edit: I read a guide on this strategy in the articles subforum, so I thought I'd give it a shot. That guy DEFINITELY knows what he's talking about. True story.     .

Sorry about the save guys, its back in the first post as well as the link Winston provided.

Signing in...at least until we run away with the game ;).
Played my set, and I must say, I think the S-man has given us a pretty solid challenge here.

I cant post it today though, busy with family. Maybe tonight if I am not too whipped, but its not likely, a day like the one I have planned takes a lot out of me.

Spending time with both of my grandchildren AND my grandmother. Yes, you are reading that right, I am the "middle" of a 5-generation chain.

Round 1:

Spoiler :

My initial thought when looking at the starting screenshot was: GLH and GL. Beyond that, I wasn't sure what to think other than that fishing would be the first tech I researched.

Upon looking at the surrounding land I was like: "Holy crap, I've never seen so many freaking hills!!!!!" Lol, this one is going to be fun indeed, and a challenge by the looks of things.

4000BC: I settled in place, researched fishing, and built a warrior to help scout

3775: Fishing done, starting mining

3675: Buddhism FIDL

3600: Meet Toku, who is to our north

3500: Mining done, start BW

3425: Hinduism FIDL

3225: Meet Kublai, dunno where he is

3050: Meet Darius, dunno where he is

3000: BW done (no copper), revolt to slavery, start hunting (see ivory, cheapens AH, leads to archery for our UU)

2875: Hunting done, start AH

2550: AH done, do we have horses...

Um, not exactly, start archery

2375: Archery done, start mysticism

2225: Found Akkad as a production city and to claim ivory for the happiness and as a military resource

2175: Finish mysticism, start sailing in anticipation of GLH

1825: Finish sailing, start masonry

1600: Finish masonry, start pottery

1500: Fin

Screenshots:

Capital

Akkad

The North

The South

Toku's lands nearby, ripe for a elephant-catapult-bowman assault (love the gems!)

NOTE: I have a settler about to be finished in the capital queue! I was going to send him to the very nice spot to our immediate east. I have a bowman headed over toward the capital as an escort.

My thinking about the next round would be this:

Settle a couple more coastal cities, fueled by the GLH, which we should finish no problem. Tech toward construction and HBR. Take out Toku with catapults, elephants, and bowmen. Then tech to literature for GL/NE/HE (we have marble nearby, although not in the best location). From there, who knows! If Toku's capital is food-heavy then I suggest GL/NE/HE there and leave our capital for bureaucracy. If it is not food heavy then I suggest using our capital as a gpfarm and switching our capital to Toku's. The latter might be the better approach anyway if we decide to continue expanding via military (not a bad idea with elephants) to the NW...

ROFL!!! I can't believe I never met HC! My woodsman two warrior that was headed down to explore that way got eaten by a bear :( :( I figured that the end was a peninsula, man was I wrong

@Ram's Neph: Ok start, but I think GLH is going to be important here, so I'm not sure about your tech priorities. Also, I'm not the biggest fan of Akkad's location tbh. Overall though, nice contribution.

@TMIT: Crazy opening!!! Nice work getting HC's capital. It's about time he got warrior-rushed for a change  My concern is that although your economy will eventually recover and be strong, it is currently in the toilet and you don't have writing yet!! That gives me some concern. I'm not sure I would want to spend centuries in the dumps despite claiming some good land, no doubt. I think since we have ivory that we can get really aggressive during the classical period and that our economy will be in much better shape if we have the GLH, currency, col (not to mention pottery/writting) to rely on. I also think getting to lit earlyish is to our advantage this game because we can crank out a lot of GSs out of our capital or an enemy capital depending on the situation. V. nice contribution overall though.

Overall: I think once we get construction (UB) and monarchy (HR) that our capital should have NO problems at all hitting 20+ early in the game!

Spoiler :
@ TMIT:
Nice! With the distance and the lack of Copper/Horses, I would've thought that a rush of any kind was out of the question. Good job proving me wrong. I do share some of futurehermit's long-term concerns, but still, that's some ballsy play.

@ futurehermit:
Yeah, it was getting late when I played that, and as I was putting my post together, I smacked myself on the forehead for not realizing earlier that this map is screaming for the GLH. My save probably still has a chance at it if I switch to Masonry immediately, but it would be close (particularly seeing from TMIT's round that HC has a coastal capitol with stone). Akkad was a close call to me. I wanted to have 2 strong cities on the grassland between me and HC, and I spaced them pretty evenly to claim all the food. But I see how overlapping the Corn could be a better move.

Nice round, by the way-- I definitely like the plan to take it to Toku.

Spoiler :
I absolutely, positively submitted my round as a joke ;). It runs the economy down too much to use warriors above prince. I actually played the entire thing out already because I was bored, so I won't be participating in this one. More like, I failed an early rush on Toku in my first attempt, and therefore it felt unethical to actually submit something worthwhile after doing that. Instead, everyone got to see some attacko in action ;).

When I played it for real I did the same thing with the 8 archers. It tanks the economy a LOT less, believe me. TBH though, he's too far away for an effective rush. It's easier just to wall the AI off and expand peacefully, and I expect a best ball for this round to involve just that.

Spoiler :
I had some spare time so played a start.

My 2 exploring warriors mapped out most of the coast before succumbing to barbarians.

I did a lighthouse-slavery opening, whipping stuff instead of chopping forests. As a result, there are a ton of forests to play with in the next phase of the game. Just need a few more workers.

I settled 2 more cities for happiness resources, the capital certainly needs them.

The stage is set for a sword-rush of that barbarian city and then Tokugawa.

Techs: Fishing, Sailing, Mining, Bronze Working, Animal Husbandry, Pottery, Hunting, Iron Working

My contribution:

Spoiler :

Opening: worker first, researched animal husbandry then fishing. Started building workboats as soon as I could using the hammers from Cow. Used my worker's spare turns to build a road toward the northern sites, which helped me snatch Gem Heaven from under Toku's nose. Grabbing the eastern spots is in the plans. Contrary to what my labels say, I will probably risk having the settler be unescorted for a louse 1 fogged square, the chance of which containing a barbarian is negligible.

I researched Iron-working early on, allowing my workers to start mining the gems by the next turn. Akkad already has a farm online, as will my other satelite city with the unpronuncible name 4 turn from now.

Weakness: I'm a bit of a sitting duck to the barbarians. No archery yet.

Before it is asked, I don't know why I am researching Pottery either.

I suggest you give it a go, see if you can find a benefit of having Bowmen on this map, and post a report. :)

Okey dokey.
Spoiler :
Two words: guerrilla bowmen. On this map, they will deal with anything the barbs throw at you: warriors, archers, axes, and swords. Guerrilla 2 bowmen become 2 move units over most of the continent with all of those hills. :crazyeye:

I played this one for fun, but I'm not good enough to post a save in this crowd. Basic synopsis:

Found Toku, Darius, Kublai, and Huayna. Built 6 bowmen and sent them to Cuzco, took it with 3 losses. Not enough troops to take his second city, so after a while I just took peace. He's sandwiched between me and Kublai anyway. Meanwhile, my warrior stole a worker from Toku. I then forgot about him for something like 2000 years before realizing we were at war, so I took peace with him.

Tech order was fishing, mining, BW, AH, myst, pottery, writing, med, PH. Starting build order was wb, wb, worker, bowmen x 6. While taking Cuzco, I built a granery and library in Babylon, followed by the oracle. I took CoL, founding confu in Cuzco (double holy city  ). I then settled near the 'phants and started rexing. CoL is huge with Hammi's org trait. Chopped the mids in Cuzco (it has stone in the bfc).

Teched thru poly/mono and bult a temple in Babylon to run a priest. First GP was a GP, built the Kong Miao in Cuzco. Got everyone on the continent converted to confu. 2nd GP was a GP also, bulbed theo and built the AP. Traded around for stuff like math, MC, aesth, researched CS, mach. Ran more priests in Babylon in the AP slots.

3rd gp was another GP, bulbed most of DR, built SM (more :gold:). I think I ran 100% research most of the game. Headed thru paper, edu, philo, lib. Got beat to UoS  probably due to the backlog of wonder building in the cap (AP, SM - it had soooo many :hammers: with all those hills and seafood). Lost lib race to a distant civ by 4 turns . So that's where I'm at now. Plan is to get nat, gunpowder, rifling, chem/steel. Draft rifles, build cannon, go nuts.
