Olympic Games

Maybe a civilization should be allowed to build the 'Olympic Games' as a wonder, making colloseums produce extra happines in the early game

This wonder could go obsolete in the later game, where every Civ that knows the one that built the wonder can then build a 'copy' national wonder to hold the Olympic Games once themselves (to represent the moden games as they are held nowadays), to either produce extra money/happines or better relations with other Civs or, lets be brave here, produce a new type of great person, a 'Sportsperson'.

Help me out on what exactly a 'Great Sportsperson' can do

That already exists as a random event.

Hmm thats good I guess but I dont think a random event does justice to the prominence, relevance and importance of the real Olympic Games. Also it would open up the chance to add Great Sportspeople to the game. Face it, sports personalities are as important as entertainers nowadays and also bring happines to their country.

+1 in all cities
+50% GPPs in all cities
Every civ with mass media gets a +1 relations bonus with all other civs.

That's the thing - there are no game mechanics a Great Athlete would affect prominently.

a steroid freak gives +1 health? not to be so generic about it but for real...

Great Athletes could boost happiness, wealth, and/or culture. You might even justify some other benefits. And they're the first suggestion I've heard for a Great Person that doesn't overlap even slightly with an existing one. That's gotta be worth something.

How on earth would it be broken?

Also, the thing about numbers is that they can be changed around. A great specialist who boosts wealth and culture doesn't have to give +3 and +12. Consider the Great Scientist and Great Engineer which both boost and but in different ratios.

Tthese two are relatively harder to attain than just settling a great person. You can argue with me that great people are hard to get. Imagine the advantage this would give Egypt, if they could pop a few great people from their obelisks then suddenly have a bunch of happy faces. They could have size 9 cities earlier than anyone else, and without needing a stack of troops.

I don't think great people should modify anything but the easily modifiable yields of cities (Sci/Gold/Cult/Prod/Esp).

Well for a start, you seem to be under the impression that all Great People are identical, which they aren't. Egypt can spam as many Prophets as they like and it won't get them an Athlete. Second, in regards to health specifically, it is strictly worse that food which, lo and behold, Great Merchants produce already. Amazingly enough, no Egyptian has ever taken advantage of this by producing huge numbers of Great Merchants in the early game. Third, happiness can be gained through any number of methods like building temples, moving the culture slider, or securing resources (distributed by blind luck, I might add, and therefore far more potentially unbalanced than something essentially controlled by the player), which is easier than popping a great person even if you're Egypt and want an inornately large number of Prophets for some reason.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, none of this has been tested. You seem awfully confident that 1 single extra happiness will totally unbalance the game, but you've never actually tried it. Even if it is broken, it's not so obviously broken that you don't even need to see it working. I'll go back to Great Merchants, which do something you apparently didn't think they could do (what with not listing food as something GP should modify, and bandying a strictly worse mechanic as "broken"). I don't believe you know what you're talking about, sir.

In my mind a Great Athlete could provide health (since it adds something new) and possibly affect happiness in a more minor way than entertainers, to account for the celebrity status that sports people can attain and which brings pride and joy to their country.

Hey, you could even build the Sports Epic! .....Jesse Owens wins 4 gold medals in front of hitler kind of thing.

they should have a way to know who wins based on population, health, and culture, and if you win the most "medals" you get a cultural increase of 50% and it could be one of the cultural victory needs to have won the at least 1/2 of the medals at anyone time.

I agree that the Olympics should be more than a small random event....

Once built as a World Wonder, the Olympics can then be bidded for and the highest bidder hosts them. Just as the Greeks originally built the wonder, which is now bidded on to see which nation will host them next. To even bid, a nation must have the infrastructure in place, eg. 8 coliseums etc. These demands scale with each era, so in modern times you may also need to have hospitals, an airport etc.

The Olympics are used as a national propagander tool these days, so the benefits would be a big culture boost and no-one can declare war on you for 'x' amount of turns. Maybe the hosts Corporations get a temporary boost also!? Depending on how extravagent your bid (bribe) was, the hosting civ will probably lose money on the deal (but the Olympics usually cost the host anyway). A civ could not host the games twice in a row; no city can host it more than once. The Olympic Wonder could continously operate in a similar vein that the U.N. Wonder does.

- how you fit a 4 yearly event into the civ timescale would be problematic.

- if 'x' amount of civ's are currently at war, no games are held til next time.

- calculations for who won the most medals and the effects of this would be interesting; especially when adding it towards a Cultural Victory.

- maybe a Great Athlete could generate something other than the usual (Sci/Gold/Cult/Prod/Esp), like a Health bonus etc. Maybe if embedded like an instructor, a Great Athlete could add a tiny bonus to health to any infantry-type units made in that city!?

I don't think that a random event does something as big as the olympics justice.

Trust me, China's not losing any money off of the olympics, I heard that forgien broadcasting companies are paying 10 million dollars to rent buildings to broacast from, and I guratee(sp?) that the goverment's getting that money.

It could be similar to the world congress in RFC. It is hosted in a random city every four years starting in like mid 1800's. That city produces double commerce that turn and you get a +2 relations bonus with every other civ that turn also gets +3 trade routes that turn. To host the olympics a city must have a colleseum and an airport (after 50% of civs have flight) and have at least 7 pop.
